Review of Grays Fair Court, Norwich, Norfolk by Charlotte Darley (Mother is a resident)
Tuesday 4 September 2012
I was very impressed by the way Age UK run this specialist respite home. It is clear from the moment that you come into the place that it is run by a professional charity and staff team that really understand what senior citizens' value. The place is not run with profit at its heart (like lots of commercial homes that I have visited), it is run with the resident's care and warm supportive relationships at its heart. Unlike other homes I have seen where residents struggle to understand the accents of eastern European and other overseas staff this is run by Norfolk folk for Norfolk folk. The place is buzzy and allows the gentlemen to play pool whilst the ladies do flower arranging etc. The fact that it is a combined day centre and respite home means that the fellow residents really are here to 'socialise, energise and revitalise' as they say in the website. The whole atmosphere is much more welcoming than most residential homes that may have 1 or 2 respite places, but where most long term residents stay in their rooms. This place has 20 respite rooms and another 25 or so day care visitors. So the staff team really do make an effort to keep people active and entertained if they want, but also they have enough quiet rooms for a quiet afternoon snooze in front of the telly if that is what is required! It also has some lovely gardens.
