Mellish House is a purpose-built home that offers a service dedicated to supporting adults diagnosed with a form of dementia, based on the expertise of University of Stirling standards.

Stirling’s Dementia Services Development Centre is renowned as the world leader in this field. The Stirling approach ensures that residents are able to move freely around the home, with bedrooms and communal areas appropriately laid out and clearly signposted to minimise confusion or disorientation. Many bedrooms feature a memory box by the front door, where mementos from a resident’s life help to personalise their room and also remind staff and visitors of the individual’s life story.

Mellish House is ideally equipped to provide residential support for elderly people living with different types of dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia and Korsacoff’s syndrome. However, staff never lose sight of the fact that, first and foremost, Mellish House is home to residents. The home has a light, airy and welcoming ambiance and residents benefit from a broad and thoroughly enjoyable range of activities.

The home offers a full range of residential support, including trial stays, respite breaks and convalescent care as well as long term care. Residents are encouraged to bring important personal possessions to personalise their rooms. Mellish House operates an open visiting policy, where residents and loved ones may visit at convenient times. The home is fully registered with the Care Quality Commission and has ISO9001/2000 and Hospitality Assured accreditation.

9.1 Mellish House has a Review Score of 9.1 (9.074)

The Review Score of 9.1 (maximum of 10) for Mellish House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.3 out of 5 from 7 Reviews over all time. This Average Rating is also the rating value for Mellish House in Google's Search Results - more info

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5 out of 5 from 7 positive Reviews in the last 12 months.

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating of all Reviews over all time. For each review the Care Home / service is rated Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, Poor or Very Poor on a number of areas eg Staff, Management etc. The Care Home receives points for each rating as follows: Excellent = 5. Good = 4. Satisfactory = 3. Poor = 2. Very Poor = 1. These points are added up and then divided by the total number of completed ratings to generate the average rating.

    The Average Rating of 4.345 for Mellish House is calculated as follows: ( (38 Excellents x 5) + (37 Goods x 4) + (9 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 84 Ratings = 4.345

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 12 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with 'Extremely Likely' or 'Likely' in answer to the question 'How likely are you to recommend this Care Home to friends and family if they needed similar care or treatment?'

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 5 Positive Reviews, 3 points for the first Positive Review and then 0.25 Points for each of the next 4 Positive Reviews.

    2. 1 point is available for reaching a target number of Positive Reviews based on 20% of the number of registered beds. If the target is partially reached then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home with 50 registered beds has a target of 10 Positive Reviews, if it has 10 or more Positive Reviews it will receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews will receive 0.7 points.

The 4.729 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Mellish House is based on 7 positive Reviews in the last 12 months and is calculated as follows:

    1. 3 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 = 4

    2. Target of 9.6 positive Reviews (48 registered beds ÷ 5). 7 Reviews ÷ 9.6 Target = 0.729

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

I have been very pleased with the care my mother has received at Mellish House throughout her stay so far. The staff have mainly been helpful. The manager has been fabulous and very considerate at times when I've been upset due to my mother's condition. Plus very professional at the same time. She has also represented my mother in meetings with outside agencies extremely well. More attention could be paid to the laundry. When the clothes are returned to the room they are often inside out and hung up in a strange fashion. Once an item was still damp!

Khala Allan, Home Manager at Mellish House responded to this review on 22 Dec 2016:

Thank you for taking the time to review Mellish House, we really appreciate your feedback. At Mellish House we take great pride in ensuring we deliver high quality care and facilities and are very pleased that you have a positive impression of our team and the high quality care they provide. We have discussed the laundry with you and will look into this further. We always welcome comments and suggestions and the opportunity to improve and we hope you will continue to share your thoughts with us in the home in future.

I have been extremely impressed with the level of care that Mellish House provides. In my view, the care and support they provide is second to none and it is noticeable how much my mother has improved since arriving earlier this year. The staff are totally focused on the residents and their well-being and the whole ethos is about providing the right level of care. Mellish House is like all care homes in many respects but if your primary focus is the well- being of a loved one; that they are safe, healthy, comfortable, respected, settled and nurtured; you will struggle to find a better place than this. Putting my mother in a home was the most difficult decision my family have had to make, Mellish House has not only made that decision easier but has proved that we absolutely made the right decision for my mother.

I'm glad that my mother is in Mellish House, Great Cornard, where she is very well cared for. The staff are not just very professional but also very human. One hears horror stories about certain institutions in this field, but we all know that the residents of Mellish House are treated well.

My husband was a resident in Mellish House for 4 years and 7 months. He suffered from Lewy Body Dementia. He died on 25th June 2016. He was well cared; the carers were attentive and took particular care to make him comfortable and pain free at the end of his life. I made good friends among the carers and staff. The care home had a family atmosphere. Great enthusiasm and energy went into the provision of activities and festivities and new ideas for entertainment.

I was made very welcome on arrival and shown to my room, introduced to other residents who I would likely strike a friendship with. I have been in a very difficult situation and every one has been so kind to me.

I have found all staff caring and office to be kind caring and efficient. If I do have any concerns I talk to the staff and concerns dealt with , as they pointed out if they are not told they are unable to sort things. My husband has settled in well and enjoyed a visit to a garden centre to see Christmas Lights in early December. His main gripe is that the food is not a good as he was used to at home, but I am sure that in time that problem will be resolved. I would certainly recommend the home to anyone looking for a place for a person with dementia regardless of what type they have.

Job Title: Home Manager

Description:

As Home Manager of Mellish House, I lead a professional care team in delivering the highest standards of specialist care for up to 48 elderly people living with dementia.

I have over 18 years of experience across Adult Mental Health, Elderly Mental Health and Adult Social Care services, spending the last 9 years in management roles. I hold SVQ’s in Adult Health and Social Care Levels 3 & 4 and QCF Level 5.

As a people person, caring has always been a passion of mine. This is the aspect that makes my job worthwhile, making a positive impact on our residents and their families lives no matter how big or small, in what has become their home and supporting them to continue a good quality of life.

I continuously work to improve and maintain the care standards at Mellish House and have in the past help to raise thousands of pounds to purchase items that have had a positive impact on those I support, including a wheelchair power pack for someone to get out and about, an electronic massage bed to help with MS symptoms and a wardrobe full of clothes for someone who lost all their belongings in a house fire. It’s these personal touches that can make all the difference.

The local community is very important to Mellish House, I have worked hard to build a good reputation to make Mellish a home of choice, this includes a ‘Good’ rating by CQC and a continuous care team who help deliver an excellent standards of care to our residents.

I enjoy the close-knit community life of Sudbury and Feering where I now live with my two teenage sons.

Away from work, I enjoy reading and spending time with her two teenage sons, partner and new puppy. I also loves music, festivals, exercise and socialising with friends.
