  • The Review Score (maximum of 10) is made up of a Quality Score (maximum of 5) and Quantity Score (maximum of 5):

    • Quality Score: 5 Points are available for the average rating. For each review the care home / service is rated Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, Poor or Very Poor on a number of areas eg Staff, Management etc. The care home / service receives points for each rating as follows: Excellent = 5. Good = 4. Satisfactory = 3. Poor = 2. Very Poor = 1. These points are added up and then divided by the total number of completed ratings to generate the average rating. (For Adult Day Care Centres and Extra Care Housing which do not have a registered number of beds, 1) and 2) are replaced by the formula of 0.2 points per Review, up to a maximum score of 2 points. ie a listing needs 10 Reviews to receive the maximum score of 2 points

The Quantity Score of 4.65 for Hillbrow House is calculated as follows:

      1. 9 Positive Reviews = 3

      2. 0.1 x 9 Positive Reviews = 0.900

First time in a care home- a bit concerned. Warm welcome and friendly staff who talked to me- put me at ease from beginning. As weeks continued my first impressions were confirmed- it was a lovely place to stay with nothing too much trouble. I could choose to eat in my room or the dining room and could spend time in my room, the common room, the garden room or the garden. The friendly relaxed, caring attitude was shown by the staff without exception, the manager and owners who were always around the home. The accommodation is good and comfortable but I am sure it is not the biggest, newest and fanciest home but it will be very hard to find a home that makes it's residents feel as cared for and well looked after as Hillbrow House does. No marking for activities as I chose not to be involved.

My neighbour and friend has been a resident at Hillbrow for 11 and a half years. For all of that time I have visited her 2/3 times a week. Throughout the entire period, all of the staff have been very courteous, kind and tolerant. The care for my neighbour has been of a high standard as is the home itself. The owner ensures that all visitors and family members are made welcome at all times and encourages participation in any of the home events laid on for residents.

Barry Shears, Director at Hillbrow House responded to this review on 30 Aug 2016:

Thank you for your kind and thoughtful comments. It was a great privilege to have cared for your friend for so many years. She became one of the family and enjoyed sharing her life experiences with the staff whilst she joined them in an occasional cigarette in the covered smoking area, whatever the weather!
Her sudden passing was a shock for all of us and she will be missed.

I came to Hillbrow House following an operation to recover. During the time I was at Hillbrow House, I received excellent care and now feel sufficiently recovered to return to my home. I cannot praise all the staff highly enough. Nothing was too much trouble. My room overlooked their lovely garden. I have recommended Hillbrow House to my sister who will be coming to the home within the next few days also for respite.

B Shears, Director at Hillbrow House responded to this review on 01 Apr 2016:

We were very pleased to have been able to give you the respite care you clearly needed and that you returned home feeling rested and well-cared for. We look forward to seeing your sister. We hope she will equally feel that her time here will have been beneficial.

My aunt has recently moved into Hillbrow. The Managers and the team couldn't have been more helpful. She needed some extra support during the move and they went that extra mile to make her feel at home. A true example of genuine person centred care. Many thanks.

My mother had a superb room - decorated freshly for her to move into. All the staff were kind, caring, friendly and fun. Elderly folk (95yrs) can be testing on patience font - but nothing was too much trouble. All my mothers requests were met with cheerfully on the day she died, she said she had been "very happy at Hillbrow House and to thank them all."

My mother came to Hillbrow after a prolonged stay in hospital. She has mild dementia, mental health issues in the form of depression and mobility problems. Hillbrow was recommended by some acquaintances. During my mothers 14 months at Hillbrow she received dedicated care and although often non-communitive she was treated with kindness and concern. During the last 4 or 5 months of my mothers life she deteriorated drastically needing feeding and manually moving from bed to chair meaning increased care and dedication by staff. The atmosphere at Hillbrow is one of a happy, caring community. I was always made most welcome by staff members on visits to my mother.

On benhalf of myself and family I would like to say a big thank you to Hillbrow for the care and love shown given to mum during the 20 months when her home was at Hillbrow. She was always very appreciative of all the kindness she received and encouraging words when life was a struggle. When visiting Hillbrow I always felt part of the family and it became my second home. It is a great place to be and highly recommended for ones loved one's to spend their final golden years amongst friends (staff). I myself am truly grateful a room came available when mum needed 24 hour care.

The staff always treated her with care and dignity attending to her needs as she progressed with Alzheimer's. Great care and attention was given to mum right to the end of her life. They even fed my brother and myself when we spent mums last few days with her, A good home with a lovely garden,
