The Review Score of 9.203 for The Poplars is based on 14 Reviews/Recommendations in the last 2 years.

  • The Review Score (maximum of 10) is made up of a Quality Score (maximum of 5) and Quantity Score (maximum of 5):

    • Quality Score: 5 Points are available for the average rating. For each review the care home / service is rated Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, Poor or Very Poor on a number of areas eg Staff, Management etc. The care home / service receives points for each rating as follows: Excellent = 5. Good = 4. Satisfactory = 3. Poor = 2. Very Poor = 1. These points are added up and then divided by the total number of completed ratings to generate the average rating. (Please note that the ratings of Very Poor and Poor have only been available since the change from Recommendations to Reviews on 7th July 2015.)

      The Quality Score (average rating) of 4.553 for The Poplars is calculated as follows: ( (99 Excellents x 5) + (51 Goods x 4) + (8 Satisfactorys x 3) + (1 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 159 Ratings = 4.553

    • Quantity Score: 5 Points are available for the number of 'Positive Reviews' for a care home / service. A Positive Review is defined as:

      • Any Review with 'Extremely Likely' or 'Likely' in answer to the question 'How likely are you to recommend this care provider to friends and family if they needed similar care or treatment?'

      • Any Recommendation. Before the change from Recommendations to Reviews on 7th July 2015 all feedback was limited to Recommendations (ie positive comments only)

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

      1. 3 points for receiving the first Positive Review.

      2. 0.1 Point per Positive Review, up to a maximum score of 1 Point. (ie a care home / service requires 10 Positive Reviews to receive the maximum score of 1 point.)

      3. (Number of Positive Reviews ÷ number of registered beds) x 2, up to a maximum score of 1 Point. ie a care home / service has to receive a number of Positive Reviews equal to half of the number of registered beds to obtain the maximum score of 1 point. eg a care home / service with 40 registered beds has to receive 20 Positive Reviews to obtain the maximum score of 1 point.

(For Adult Day Care Centres and Extra Care Housing which do not have a registered number of beds, 1) and 2) are replaced by the formula of 0.2 points per Review, up to a maximum score of 2 points. ie a listing needs 10 Reviews to receive the maximum score of 2 points

The Quantity Score of 4.65 for The Poplars is calculated as follows:

      1. 13 Positive Reviews = 3

      2. 0.1 x 13 Positive Reviews = 1.300 (maximum score = 1)

      3. (13 Positive Reviews ÷ 40 Registered Beds) x 2 = 0.650

  • The Review Score is based on user Recommendations/Reviews submitted in the last 2 years. The maximum Review Score is 10. There are 5 Points available for the average of all ratings on users Recommendations/Reviews (Excellent 5, Good 4, Satisfactory 3, Poor 2, Very Poor 1). Staff- excellent (professional, always kind)
Food- excellent
Gardens- excellent
Room- sufficient. Not having dementia but having lung problems, 24hr heating and locked windows was a big problem. Shame no en-suite bathroom!
Bathroom facilities- very clean.

Mum has been at The Poplars since March and has benefited greatly with the attention and care she gets, and has gone up 2 sizes which isn't a bad thing! Just before Christmas she developed a chest infection and then pneumonia and had to stay in hospital for 4 days. The staff were all very supportive during this time as were the rest of her new 'family' and it was lovely to see how pleased everyone was to see her when she came home on Christmas Eve. obviously she wasn't well enough to go to our usual family gathering but my brother and I went in the morning to the Christmas spirit well and truly flowing! There was a lovely family atmosphere and everyone was offered a tipple and hot mince-pie. Santa handed out presents and all the staff including some not on duty joined in the festivities. I was able to have lunch with Mum and friends before leaving in the afternoon.
I would also like to say how impressed I was with the time and effort that went into decorating the lounges and other areas, and all the social events that went on in the run up to both Christmas and New Year! It really did feel like home!

-The staff are always willing and happy to discuss the health and welfare of my mother.
-They have a real concern that she is comfortable, happy, confident within her abilities and feels cared for.
-The staff work hard to provide a variety (with trips out and indoor activities) and interest for the residents and my mother is enjoying these.
-She is recognised as an individual with a previous life, interests and a family.

When I last saw my mother 6 months ago she was in a very confused and depressed mental state following a stroke. This visit, from where I live, I found her cheerful, alert and much more sociable than I have seen her in decades. I credit the amazingly kind, sensitive staff of Poplars for this turnaround and particularly the Manager, who is clearly a superior leader and sets a tone of humor, compassion and encouragement for residents to be their best, within the confines of their physical and mental abilities. My mother feels safe, cared for as a person and able to contribute to the welfare of others not as capable as her. Thank you to the Manager and all the staff.

The staff at The Poplars have looked after my father for the past 1yr 10months, he has been taken care with 1st class service, caring and respect despite being in the later stages of Alzheimer's. During the last week of my father's life the family had to make a decision to move him or leave him where he lived at The Poplars. We chose to keep him in The Poplars. All the staff kept us informed about his health, they also cared for the family and treated him with respect during his time. I am very grateful I was informed of his deterioration and this enabled our family to be with dad as he passed away. They also cared for our needs.

The staff at Poplars were first class and went over and above to see to my husbands needs, as he is a very active Dementia sufferer. He was very settled and now goes 2 days a week to the day care centre "Lilac Court". I found management very approachable and very sympathetic to my time as a a full time carer. So no concerns about him staying there again.

My father spent his last six months of life at 'The Poplars' and the care he received was exemplary, particularly at the end of his life. We were welcome to call at any time. The staff were unfailingly helpful, kind and allowed my father (95) dignity and peace in his last days, doing all the things that I could not- 24 hour care. He himself was full of admiration and thanks to the carers.

My father has been a resident at this care home for a least four years, and whilst there have been changes in management. On my visits I have always found the staff attentive, friendly and caring, and always willing to have a light-hearted moment with their residents. My father has always had the highest praise for them, and I can see why, nothing is to much trouble. If only all care homes could be like this. I have no hesitation in recommending this care home to anyone.
