Abbeycrest Care Home is located in the quiet village of Sonning Common, in the heart of the Chilterns and is one of Caring Homes’ newest homes, offering exceptional residential, nursing and specialist dementia care.

Abbeycrest provides residents with a true Care Pathway by offering a full suite of residential, nursing and dedicated dementia care. As such, residents may rest safe in the knowledge that the home can cater for their care needs both now and in the future.

Abbeycrest Care Home’s dementia care provision has been designed to meet the University of Stirling’s standards, which are widely acknowledged as providing the best living environment for people living with dementia. Stirling’s Dementia Services Development Centre is renowned as the world leader in this field. The Stirling approach ensures that residents are able to move freely around the home, with bedrooms and communal areas appropriately laid out and clearly signposted to minimise confusion or disorientation. Each bedroom features a memory box by its front door, where mementos from a resident’s life help to personalise their room and also remind staff and visitors of the individual’s life story.

The home offers a full range of residential, nursing and specialist dementia support, including trial stays, respite breaks and convalescent care as well as long term care. Residents are encouraged to bring important personal possessions to personalise their rooms. Abbeycrest operates an open visiting policy, where residents and loved ones may visit at convenient times. In common with all their homes, Abbeycrest’s manager has a qualified nursing background.

The home is fully registered with the Care Quality Commission and has ISO9001/2000 and Hospitality Assured accreditation.

The Review Score of 9.404 for Abbeycrest Care Home is based on 23 Reviews/Recommendations in the last 2 years.

  • The Review Score (maximum of 10) is made up of a Quality Score (maximum of 5) and Quantity Score (maximum of 5):

    • Quality Score: 5 Points are available for the average rating. For each review the care home / service is rated Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, Poor or Very Poor on a number of areas eg Staff, Management etc. The care home / service receives points for each rating as follows: Excellent = 5. Good = 4. Satisfactory = 3. Poor = 2. Very Poor = 1. These points are added up and then divided by the total number of completed ratings to generate the average rating. (Please note that the ratings of Very Poor and Poor have only been available since the change from Recommendations to Reviews on 7th July 2015.)

      The Quality Score (average rating) of 4.747 for Abbeycrest Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (201 Excellents x 5) + (61 Goods x 4) + (3 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 265 Ratings = 4.747

      • Any Review with 'Extremely Likely' or 'Likely' in answer to the question 'How likely are you to recommend this care provider to friends and family if they needed similar care or treatment?'

      • Any Recommendation. Before the change from Recommendations to Reviews on 7th July 2015 all feedback was limited to Recommendations (ie positive comments only)

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

      1. 3 points for receiving the first Positive Review.

      2. 0.1 Point per Positive Review, up to a maximum score of 1 Point. (ie a care home / service requires 10 Positive Reviews to receive the maximum score of 1 point.)

      3. (Number of Positive Reviews ÷ number of registered beds) x 2, up to a maximum score of 1 Point. ie a care home / service has to receive a number of Positive Reviews equal to half of the number of registered beds to obtain the maximum score of 1 point. eg a care home / service with 40 registered beds has to receive 20 Positive Reviews to obtain the maximum score of 1 point.

(For Adult Day Care Centres and Extra Care Housing which do not have a registered number of beds, 1) and 2) are replaced by the formula of 0.2 points per Review, up to a maximum score of 2 points. ie a listing needs 10 Reviews to receive the maximum score of 2 points

The Quantity Score of 4.657 for Abbeycrest Care Home is calculated as follows:

      1. 23 Positive Reviews = 3

      2. 0.1 x 23 Positive Reviews = 2.300 (maximum score = 1)

      3. (23 Positive Reviews ÷ 70 Registered Beds) x 2 = 0.657

  • The Review Score is based on user Recommendations/Reviews submitted in the last 2 years. The maximum Review Score is 10. There are 5 Points available for the average of all ratings on users Recommendations/Reviews (Excellent 5, Good 4, Satisfactory 3, Poor 2, Very Poor 1). My brother only spent the last 25 days of his life at Abbeycrest and I am therefore unable to comment in depth on all the facilities and amenities available. However during that period, he was treated with great care, compassion and dignity.

My partner was in Abbeycrest for nearly a month. He was very well looked after and the staff were caring and looked after him very well. When he left it was because he felt he would be happier to live at home with a carer. This was for no other reason than he didn't have a like minded person within the home to talk to.

Marilyn Kimayong, Home Manager at Abbeycrest Care Home responded to this review on 14 Apr 2016:

Dear Penny, thank you for taking the time to review Abbeycrest, we really appreciate your feedback. At Abbeycrest we take great pride in ensuring we deliver high quality care and facilities and we are really pleased to hear your partner enjoyed his stay. The team at Abbeycrest send him our very best wishes. We build our care team to ensure they are able to provide person centred care and spend valuable time with our residents. We always welcome the opportunity to improve, and hope you will continue to share your thoughts with us in the home.

Mum has been in Abbeycrest Care Home for just over a year and has been cared for extremely well throughout that time. Of course she would rather be living at home but she could never have the same care and attention if she was! Every member of staff has treated her kindly, respectfully and lovingly with a great sense of humour as well. As family members we have also appreciated the efforts made to communicate with us and involve us wherever possible. Congratulations on getting "Home of the year 2015"! Very well deserved!

I have been very pleased to see how relaxed my mother-in-law has been since she moved into Abbeycrest. Aside from her own well being, I can see how much happier this has also made my wife and all the family.

I was very unhappy with the care home my mother was in so I rang Abbeycrest with a view to visit them. I was so impressed with the lady on the telephone who advised me to visit. On arrival we were welcomed by her who showed us around the home. Immediately I knew Abbeycrest was the right home for mum who suffers dementia. The manager visited mum at the previous care home and kindly reassured mum she would be so happy at Abbeycrest. My mum genuinely thinks she is staying at a hotel. The staff from the nursing through to the catering staff are all so kind and professional in their work. My mum has been at Abbeycrest for around 6 weeks and I feel a weight has been lifted off me, now I know she is being looked after and is safe.

My mum was very unhappy at her previous care home, so as a family we moved her to Abbeycrest. The difference in just a few days was quite amazing. Every single time we visit mum is laughing and happy in her own way. All staff members from management to nursing to catering are brilliant. Our main concern for mum was that she will be happy wherever she is. We have certainly made the correct choice with Abbeycrest.

My 103 year old friend was a resident at Abbeycrest for the last fifteen months of her life, when she needed the 100% rapport that her previous care home although good could not provide. She was fed, talked to, turned over and no bed sores in way that combined professionalism, care and kindness in the face of seizures that deprived her of physical and mental capacity. Staffing levels are high and there is a calm atmosphere throughout. It does not have an institutional feel. Everything is bright and light and relatively spacious.

My mum has been a resident for more than 2 and half years now, and she has been very happy here. All the carers have been lovely and treat mum with care and respect. She always remarks how kind everyone is, and how patient the staff are. The rooms are all comfortable and well furnished, my mums room has a lovely patio and view of the garden. The carers and nurses are all very approachable and it is easy to raise any concerns with them.

I have found Abbeycrest to be professional and caring. It is never easy for someone to lose their independence and I believe Abbeycrest have assisted my mother to make this unpleasant transition as well as they could. They provide a cheerful environment, and atmosphere. The manager has been particularly helpful to me and I can thoroughly recommend this care home.

We were very impressed when we visited the home, especially with the quality of life provided for the residents. Job Title: Registered Home Manager

Description:

I’m a qualified Nurse with a background in care of the elderly, and have worked all around the world in a variety of care home settings. Some of the places I have worked include China, Taiwan and the Philippines. I have also spent time teaching, lecturing and training care colleagues both here in the UK and abroad.

I previously worked at other Caring Homes locations, including Huntercombe Hall and Hulcott, before moving to Abbeycrest. I am very proud of my accomplishments, especially my efforts to build strong local community links and to assure our high standards of care are maintained.

As Manager I enjoy the variety of each day and always take great pleasure from time spent talking to residents and relatives. I particularly love the reward of seeing a resident respond positively to the care and comfort provided by my Care Team at the home.

I’m a strong advocate of investing in our local community, and I also regularly send money back to an education project in my native home town in the Philippines. The project sponsors underprivileged school children to achieve secondary education qualifications, enabling them to have better life prospects.
