The Review Score of 9.155 for Emberbrook Care Home is based on 18 Reviews/Recommendations in the last 2 years.

  • The Review Score (maximum of 10) is made up of a Quality Score (maximum of 5) and Quantity Score (maximum of 5):

    • Quality Score: 5 Points are available for the average rating. For each review the care home / service is rated Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, Poor or Very Poor on a number of areas eg Staff, Management etc. The care home / service receives points for each rating as follows: Excellent = 5. Good = 4. Satisfactory = 3. Poor = 2. Very Poor = 1. These points are added up and then divided by the total number of completed ratings to generate the average rating. (Please note that the ratings of Very Poor and Poor have only been available since the change from Recommendations to Reviews on 7th July 2015.)

      The Quality Score (average rating) of 4.626 for Emberbrook Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (143 Excellents x 5) + (63 Goods x 4) + (7 Satisfactorys x 3) + (1 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 214 Ratings = 4.626

      • Any Review with 'Extremely Likely' or 'Likely' in answer to the question 'How likely are you to recommend this care provider to friends and family if they needed similar care or treatment?'

      • Any Recommendation. Before the change from Recommendations to Reviews on 7th July 2015 all feedback was limited to Recommendations (ie positive comments only)

      1. 3 points for receiving the first Positive Review.

      2. 0.1 Point per Positive Review, up to a maximum score of 1 Point. (ie a care home / service requires 10 Positive Reviews to receive the maximum score of 1 point.)

      3. (Number of Positive Reviews ÷ number of registered beds) x 2, up to a maximum score of 1 Point. ie a care home / service has to receive a number of Positive Reviews equal to half of the number of registered beds to obtain the maximum score of 1 point. eg a care home / service with 40 registered beds has to receive 20 Positive Reviews to obtain the maximum score of 1 point.

(For Adult Day Care Centres and Extra Care Housing which do not have a registered number of beds, 1) and 2) are replaced by the formula of 0.2 points per Review, up to a maximum score of 2 points. ie a listing needs 10 Reviews to receive the maximum score of 2 points

The Quantity Score of 4.529 for Emberbrook Care Home is calculated as follows:

      1. 18 Positive Reviews = 3

      2. 0.1 x 18 Positive Reviews = 1.800 (maximum score = 1)

      3. (18 Positive Reviews ÷ 68 Registered Beds) x 2 = 0.529

My mum has been at Emberbrook for a while now and she has always felt that she moved to a lovely new home, rather than being put somewhere against her will. Thank you Team Emberbrook.

From our first visit the day of the Guinness Book of Records tea party, we felt that this was the place that mum would feel at home.
We were made to feel welcome every time we visited by everyone from reception staff, cleaners, care workers, nurses and management. Mum was treated with respect at all times and the whole team really cared about her and our family. Highly recommended.

I realise I have put in inclusive years rather than a particular year for this review. This is because from 2007 when my husband who was suffering from Alzheimer's disease was admitted to this wonderful care home, he was well looked after with sensitivity and dignity even as he deteriorated to the end of his life on 25th Nov 2015. He was not the easiest or most placid patient but he was always treated kindly and patiently. I was made to feel welcome on all of my visits, so much so, that I still occasionally pop in to see the regular staff.

Stuart King, Home Manager at Emberbrook Care Home responded to this review on 26 Oct 2016:

Thank you for your comments, we welcome all feedback that will help us continue to improve our care services.

I just wanted to pick up on and try to address your rating on activities. The Activities team at Emberbrook offer a range of planned activities and entertainment. We have also introduced our Magic Moments recreation and activities programme to encourage well-being by concentrating in equal measure on the mind, through mental agility; the body, through fitness and mobility; and the soul, through entertainment and personal interests, continued learning and emotional engagement.

We are very fortunate that we are able to offer activities within and outside the home as Emberbrook has it’s own mini-bus. We are currently looking for a volunteer driver to help us maintain our outside trips, which we know our residents value immensely. We offer a range of exercise classes including Oomph and weekly Pilates. Unfortunately we’ve had a slight pause with our resident Pilates classes as our teacher has been ill recently. We hope to have Pilates back on our weekly schedule in no time, as this is a very popular activity.

If there is anything you would like to discuss further, please do not hesitate to contact customercare@brighterkind.com or pop into the home anytime. Many thanks, Stuart King, Home Manager.

An excellent home, well run, good food and very good care for my husband.

My partner is a retired medical consultant who has many disabling illnesses requiring very skilled care. We were made warmly welcome and it soon became clear that the standard of care and dignity afforded to all residents was of a genuinely high calibre. People working there in any capacity were cheerful, helpful and seem to be part of a happy team. The manager is excellent and leads a team of very committed people who share high values in their treatment of every resident and of each other. Visitors are welcomed at any time and many highly professionally qualified visitors expressed their good impression of this care centre. I would recommend it. It is expensive but what price is peace of mind?

I wrote to the manager to say how delighted I was with the new staff he had managed to recruit, in particular, a lovely young girl who's care of my mother has been outstanding. I feel things at Emberbrook have improved considerably, especially the activities. It is always difficult getting the right staff and I think it is very important to keep morale up amongst those we have in order to retain them.

My mother has been in the dementia section at Emberbrook for just over a year now and I can not speak highly enough of the staff who are exceptional, from the manager, who has transformed the home, to the nursing staff and carers. They are all kind, caring and cheerful and I love that they all work so well together as a team and support each other. A special mention to the activities lady, who with her passion, enthusiasm and energy has made such a difference to my mother's well-being, as have the other staff who are too many to list.
It is notable that the staff tend to stay a long time and it is a comfortable, happy and friendly home. It is a great comfort to our family that we know my mother is in the best hands possible.

I came for respite care and decided to stay. I have a light airy room which is decorated exactly to my taste. I have high nursing needs which are met expertly by kind, caring professional staff. There are varied and interesting activities throughout the week. In one sentence- the care home has given me my life back.

My mother-in-law spent three weeks in Emberbrook, after breaking her left arm just below the 'ball and socket' of her shoulder.
Emberbrook were excellent in finding space for my mother-in-law at very short notice.

She, and her family, have been extremely impressed with the quality of care dispensed over this period. The gentleness, professional care and attention has made my mother-in-law's stay a real pleasure, at a very difficult and painful time in her life. The staff have been friendly, welcoming and cheerful at all times.

Following a period of enforced hospitalisation that lasted several weeks due to a significant stroke, our relative returned to Emberbrook Care Home in November. The standard of comprehensive and holistic care that our relative receives whilst at Emberbrook Care Home is substantially superior to that which they received whilst in other care. The family were deeply relieved and thankful to know that our family member had been re-accepted into the George Tickner Wing and upon arrival back, immediately attended to by several members of staff in order to ensure that their personal dignity, welfare, hygiene and basic health care/nursing needs were met with a combined element of compassion and immediacy. As a family we have always been and remain deeply appreciative of all the staff members continuing input, hard work, dedication, compassion and understanding.

All of us here at Emberbrook were delighted to have met you and thank you for the wonderful feedback, much appreciated. I will of course pass all your comments back to the team who will be very pleased to hear your news. Kind regards

I would recommend this nursing home to anyone who has a loved one in need of 24/7 care. There are excellent facilities, the staff are very caring and importantly LONG TERM - in effect they've become my sister's family - providing the best care and understanding.
I have a good relationship with the staff, who are always ready to discuss my sister's condition. We have unlimited access at any time. Special thanks to sister Winnie, Ben and Henry who their jobs with great enthusiasm and genuine interest.

My mother-in-law, Olive Wallis was a resident at Emberbrook for two years until she passed away there in April 2015. Throughout her stay she was well cared for. Half way through her stay she had a major stroke and her needs increased significantly. They coped with the change in her circumstances well, and never forgot Olive as she had been before the stroke. Her dignity was preserved and we had no concerns about her safety. I think I would observe that Emberbrook has improved over the years and is truly an excellent home. It distinguishes itself not by fancy curtains and carpets, but the kindness, dedication and abilities of its staff. In particular special mention should go to the Deputy Manager who always had time to talk to the family and listen to our concerns for Olive. They managed her end of life care compassionately and demonstrated their nursing skills to the full.

I have been associated with Embabrook since summer 2012 both for my cousin now deceased and for her husband who is still a resident. I cannot praise them enough for what is done there enough. I could visit unannounced at any time of the day or night, and not find anything unwanted. I should add that I am a former nurse and health visitor. The staff are as caring and respectful of the relatives, as they are for the residents. I would live there myself if necessary.

Out of countless homes visited Emberbrook is by far the best in the area. Staff are always friendly and caring to the residents, especially the two deputy managers. There has recently been a change of manager but we are sure this can only benefit the home. We are also please that a complete renovation of the home is immanent.

I am really happy with Emberbrook Care Home, it is such a happy, relaxed and welcoming environment. My mother was a resident there 2 years ago, so when it came to choosing a care home for my husband last year, there was no contest. He has very complex needs, having severe cognitive impairment following a series of strokes over the past 10 years. He is well looked after and happy there. The staff are wonderful, understanding, kind and caring - nothing is too much trouble. There is always something going on to provide stimulation for the residents, with a variety of activities to suit all tastes. I really enjoy visiting my husband as I am always made so welcome. I am there so much that I now regard it as my second home - and I always get a cup of tea! I have no hesitation in recommending this care home.
