    • Quality Score: 5 Points are available for the average rating. For each review the care home / service is rated Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, Poor or Very Poor on a number of areas eg Staff, Management etc. The care home / service receives points for each rating as follows: Excellent = 5. Good = 4. Satisfactory = 3. Poor = 2. Very Poor = 1. These points are added up and then divided by the total number of completed ratings to generate the average rating. (Please note that the ratings of Very Poor and Poor have only been available since the change from Recommendations to Reviews on 7th July 2015.)

      The Quality Score (average rating) of 4.53 for Barchester Wykeham House Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (119 Excellents x 5) + (68 Goods x 4) + (8 Satisfactorys x 3) + (3 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 198 Ratings = 4.53

      3. (Number of Positive Reviews ÷ number of registered beds) x 2, up to a maximum score of 1 Point. ie a care home / service has to receive a number of Positive Reviews equal to half of the number of registered beds to obtain the maximum score of 1 point. eg a care home / service with 40 registered beds has to receive 20 Positive Reviews to obtain the maximum score of 1 point.

(For Adult Day Care Centres and Extra Care Housing which do not have a registered number of beds, 1) and 2) are replaced by the formula of 0.2 points per Review, up to a maximum score of 2 points. ie a listing needs 10 Reviews to receive the maximum score of 2 points

The Quantity Score of 4.447 for Barchester Wykeham House Care Home is calculated as follows:

      1. 17 Positive Reviews = 3

      2. 0.1 x 17 Positive Reviews = 1.700 (maximum score = 1)

      3. (17 Positive Reviews ÷ 76 Registered Beds) x 2 = 0.447

In my mother's last few hours of life the staff were fantastic, so kind, the tea and biscuits really helped. We were really looked after, and mum was made as comfortable as possible, and pain-free. We thank the staff for their kindness and compassion.

Thank you, Debbie, it was a pleasure. I hope you and the family are well, please visit anytime. Thank you for your kindness as well.

Food very good. Bed is a bit hard, position within the home not acceptable for someone who has all their faculties as was told the room would be upstairs and ended up on ground floor with more dementia related residents.
Staff very helpful and friendly and couldn't do enough for me.

Thank you for your response and your very positive comments on food, the staff and their service. I am glad to see that in that you rated those areas excellent as well as care/support, that you were treated with dignity and the cleanliness of the home. I am sorry that we were not able to accommodate you in your room/area of choice for your short stay with us. Should you return for another period of stay in the future we will endeavour to meet your preference.

When visiting my mum the staff are always very friendly and welcoming and my mum seems very well cared for. I have nothing but admiration for the staff at Wykeham House.

Sibby Sawyer, General Manager at Barchester Wykeham House Care Home responded to this review on 28 Jun 2016:

Thank you for your positive comments. I am very proud of the team at Wykeham House and we will continue to work hard to make improvements in all aspects of our work

On the whole carers work very hard to create a caring environment and genuinely seem to care for the residents. However, they are frequently under time pressure from under staffing and sickness absence. This means they they may not be able to spent sufficient time with individual residents, especially those who are not mobile, and who therefore can feel isolated.

Individual carers are mostly good, occasionally do not respond to residents who are speaking to them. Training in communication skills has been organised to hopefully this will improve. Some carers go the extra mile, and relate to the residents, others do not really listen and laugh when they are speaking.

Nursing is variable with failure to notice symptoms of infection and lack of knowledge of geriatric immune response (or lack of); one or two very good and sensitive, and listen to residents and family. There seems to be a fear of asking the GP, and are reactive rather than proactive with health issues unfortunately.

Thank you for your feedback. Good and constructive critic is always welcome and appreciated. Your compliments will be shared with the team and your critic and suggestions used to address improvements for the home. Please feel free to see me in person to discuss how we can all work together for the benefit of those living in our home and anyone using the service

First class service, a place I would hope to go to when my time comes. The care they give to my wife is friendly, my wife likes a joke and has fun. Of course she would be happy at home with me, but that's impossible. It would be nice to see her out of bed for the summer.

My cousin has been well cared for generally. Her hearing aids are often problematic - she says that when she is washed in the mornings the aids are frequently not removed, so often have water in the tubes or when they are removed they are done roughly and tubes have fallen out. We have had to take them to the hospital for repairs.

Thank you Mrs JM. It was a pleasure having you stay with us for respite. I am glad you found the nurses and carers lovely and l hope you will come back whenever you need another break. Your compliments have been passed onto the staff.

Over the last 2 months we have noticed a great improvement in my mothers communication skills. Since having daily activities she hardly disturbs her room at all. She seems very content there after 16 months there. The staff are very respectful of their dignity and very kind. All staff are very approachable, if you have any queries.

Thank you for your kind comments. There has been a strong drive within the team at Wykeham House to improve the social life of residents within the home especially on our Memory Lanes as well as engagement with the community in Horley. I am pleased that the result is a direct impact on your mother's communication skills. We will continue in this direction and your on going support is instrumental in all we are aiming to achieve

Completely satisfied by care in this nursing home, staff from manager down are all superb in what they do, they seem to take client requests seriously and compassionately. Overall my family are delighted with the treatment my wife is getting.

My Aunt has been a resident here for four years since July 2011. We as a family have always found all the staff very caring, happy and very hard working and helpful at all times. It is also very evident that since the managers appointment eighteen months ago an every greater improvement in training, she also assures that the staffs welfare etc is much improved. Nurses and carers offer the highest standard of performance.

It was a real pleasure for me and my team to share a simple tradition such as a Sunday Roast with all the residents and their families. Something that all our residents would have at one time enjoyed at home with their families and loved ones. Thank you for joining us and supporting our activities programme.

Since moving to Wykeham House just over 6 months ago my mother has really responded well to the care and attention provided. Her family all feel she is in safe hands because the entire staff have shown great care and respect for her as an individual.

Thank you very much Tom for your kind words of support and encouragement for the staff team. I am glad to hear that you feel assured of your mother's care and safety at Wykeham House. I will pass your message to our team.

My dad went into this home terminally ill and they were very patient and treated him with dignity. The room was clean and the staff very polite and helpful also very supportive to me as well. I could not have wished for a better end to my dads life. They kept him free from pain which the hospital were unable to do.

My Dad had Lewey Body Dementia, a particularly challenging form of Dementia which is characterised by hallucinations and restless behaviour.

My brother and I visited 26 nursing homes before we found Wykeham House. It would be difficult to offer sufficient praise for their operation. Dad received kind, jolly and patient care from his arrival to his passing last month. He recovered a quality of life we thought lost and whilst very disorientated recovered his typical good humour as well. Even in his passing, his dignity and privacy were preserved.

The staff were excellent: patient, kind, skilful and genial. Often in the face of behaviour that would try the patience of a saint.

In addition the Dementia Care Wards "Memory Lane 1 & 2" are designed in such a way that the residents can safely potter about without risk of getting our or falling down the stairs. Because they can move about more or less as they see fit, their anxiety is hugely reduced, much improving their quality of life.

It is to be noted that the staff are from many nations and are a multi-ethnic workforce. I wondered if this might challenge some residents but in practice the warmth of care swept aside any antiquated attitudes and the residents seemed happy with those around them.

Food and drink is plentiful and activities are taken with great pragmatism...maximising the joy of lucid moments over inflexibly trying to force the residents to reach an challenging outcome.

My brother and I were welcomed day or night and the kindness afforded to Dad was extended to us.

The only word of sufficiency is exemplary! I would have no hesitation in using Wykeham House again in the future. Sibbi and her team are to be commended.

Happy New Year! Thank you for those lovely kind words. You are welcome to visit us and join us at an event that takes your interest from our activities calendar.

My wife Margaret has been in Memory Lane at Wykeham House for over 2 and a half years; and I have nothing but praise for the staff for getting my wife mobile and motivated, because when she first went into Memory Lane she could not move or speak and she did not know who I was. All of the staff have done a wonderful job and are always friendly and helpful. Thank you.

Outstanding care, despite poor prognosis from hospital on mum's chance of ever walking again after a fall, then 6 weeks in hospital where physio's pronounced she would 'never walk again', so she was transferred to Wykeham. On her 1st day, Teresa Lofting came to mum's room to suggest strengthening exercises and I asked if I could continue same exercises each day to help. Within less than 2 weeks mum was out of bed walking!! Mum continued walking with a walker for a further 2 years, thanks to Teresa's help, patience, advice and emotional support, giving mum confidence. Mum has dementia and was very anxious and was also in pain from the fall. Physiotherapy provided by Movement and Mobilisation therapy.
