The Review Score of 8.983 for Calway House is based on 12 Reviews/Recommendations in the last 2 years.

  • The Review Score (maximum of 10) is made up of a Quality Score (maximum of 5) and Quantity Score (maximum of 5):

    • Quality Score: 5 Points are available for the average rating. For each review the care home / service is rated Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, Poor or Very Poor on a number of areas eg Staff, Management etc. The care home / service receives points for each rating as follows: Excellent = 5. Good = 4. Satisfactory = 3. Poor = 2. Very Poor = 1. These points are added up and then divided by the total number of completed ratings to generate the average rating. (Please note that the ratings of Very Poor and Poor have only been available since the change from Recommendations to Reviews on 7th July 2015.)

      The Quality Score (average rating) of 4.694 for Calway House is calculated as follows: ( (109 Excellents x 5) + (28 Goods x 4) + (5 Satisfactorys x 3) + (2 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 144 Ratings = 4.694

      • Any Review with 'Extremely Likely' or 'Likely' in answer to the question 'How likely are you to recommend this care provider to friends and family if they needed similar care or treatment?'

      • Any Recommendation. Before the change from Recommendations to Reviews on 7th July 2015 all feedback was limited to Recommendations (ie positive comments only)

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

      1. 3 points for receiving the first Positive Review.

      2. 0.1 Point per Positive Review, up to a maximum score of 1 Point. (ie a care home / service requires 10 Positive Reviews to receive the maximum score of 1 point.)

      3. (Number of Positive Reviews ÷ number of registered beds) x 2, up to a maximum score of 1 Point. ie a care home / service has to receive a number of Positive Reviews equal to half of the number of registered beds to obtain the maximum score of 1 point. eg a care home / service with 40 registered beds has to receive 20 Positive Reviews to obtain the maximum score of 1 point.

(For Adult Day Care Centres and Extra Care Housing which do not have a registered number of beds, 1) and 2) are replaced by the formula of 0.2 points per Review, up to a maximum score of 2 points. ie a listing needs 10 Reviews to receive the maximum score of 2 points

The Quantity Score of 4.289 for Calway House is calculated as follows:

      1. 12 Positive Reviews = 3

      2. 0.1 x 12 Positive Reviews = 1.200 (maximum score = 1)

      3. (12 Positive Reviews ÷ 83 Registered Beds) x 2 = 0.289

  • The Review Score is based on user Recommendations/Reviews submitted in the last 2 years. The maximum Review Score is 10. There are 5 Points available for the average of all ratings on users Recommendations/Reviews (Excellent 5, Good 4, Satisfactory 3, Poor 2, Very Poor 1). My mother moved from another care home to Calway in February 2015. She has settled well into life at Calway. The staff are always kind caring and empathic to her needs. She is very happy. The only complaint is the constant ringing of call bells which greatly disturb my mother. Surely a better system could be achieved with personal beepers, as they have in hospitals. Also a lighter weight wheelchair available for use for outings by residents. Also activities need to be a little more stimulating!

The staff are lovely and do a good job always demonstrating care, kindness and respect. I am disappointed that a permanent manager has not been appointed. This is the third temp. The food has improved but it would be good to see more attention to presentation and taste once again catering staff do what they can, tricky to please all and cater for specialist diets. My mother is happy at Calway and this gives me a life, she has a good relationship with the people that care for her.

Jo Fenn, Home Manager at Calway House responded to this review on 17 Mar 2016:

Firstly, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for taking the time to leave a review for Calway House. I'm really pleased to hear that your mother is happy in the home, and if you would like to contact me directly, I would be more than happy to meet with you to discuss any concerns you may have.

My mother-in-law came to Calway House a year ago into residential care. She has been so comfortable and well looked after that, when it came to finding a care homes for my father (late stage dementia) I had to look no further. The phone is professionally managed, the staff are excellent and unfailingly cheerful and helpful. Calway House provides a safe, caring environment and I would recommend it to anyone.

I cannot fault Calway House for their care of my mother. They are the most caring group of people, always approachable and incredibly understanding. They have bent over backwards to accommodate my mother's on going needs. The leadership provided by the supervisors is brilliant, setting a high standard which all the staff follow, nurses, carers, cleaners etc. Everyone ensures the home is a bright friendly place, clean and sweet smelling with as many activities as possible provided for those who want to engage in them.

I am in nursing care. The staff are 1st class, always caring and friendly to the residents and they work as a good team. If all care homes were to this standard there would be nothing in the newspapers! Somerset Care maintain high standards.

Constantly keeping me informed of my mothers welfare. Staff are so caring, respectful and the management always aware of all residents. The food is excellent and always happy to adjust the menu for an individual. I can't speak too highly of the home. Lovely atmosphere. The daily activities keep residents active in body and mind. Calway House is always clean and fresh smelling. If I could give them an award I would. I can honestly say I wouldn't have my Mum staying anywhere else :)

This is an excellent care home where the staff are always available to help with a smile, a gentle manner and a lot of love. My Mother-in-law is 96, a bit stubborn, has very poor recall, is incontinent and sleeps at funny times, but and sleeps at funny times. She is treated as if she was royalty. We are greeted with a smile & a cup of tea whenever wee visit.

I think I speak on behalf of the whole family. Calway House gave my father a two year lease of life until 1992. The home is bright and clean and the staff are always caring and friendly to residents and welcoming to visitors. The food is very good and there are activities for those who wish for them. Administration is efficient and friendly. They could do with the same help resolving parking concern. We cannot express too highly our appreciation to Calway House and we would recommend it without reservation.

Both my parents lived at Calway House, my father for 7 years, my mother for 10. My father had Alzheimers, he was treated with the greatest care and respect was shown at all times. My mother was severely disabled and was taken care of on the nursing unit. The wonderful staff became her's and mine, extended family, I couldn't have asked for anything more. The home was always full of life, the staff get on well with each other and everyone did that bit more than just their job. Everywhere was clean and bright with no unpleasant odours often associated with care home. Excellent in every respect.

Calway presents itself well and thoroughly deserves its "Good" CQC rating in all areas
The buildings are friendly, clean and modern, the rooms well kept and the whole is more reminiscent of a private hospital or small up-market hotel

Staff seem caring, friendly and polite at all times

In particular, although Calway is clearly for elderly people with age and health problems, it completely manages to avoid the archetypal "old folks home" feel (and smell !")

As a result it is a pleasure to visit.

Caring staff/professional.
