I would certainly recommend this friendly, accommodating, 'person-centred' care home. It was with a heavy heart that our family made the heartwrenching decision to place our Dad in a care home, particularly given that he would need an EMI placement, which ultimately meant that he would be placed in a setting whereby the residents would be very ill, very challenging and very high maintenence in terms of behaviours, physical, emotional and mental health needs. Initially, I have to hold my hand up and admit, we were all, as an over protective concerned family, extremely reluctant to place our beloved Dad, who had been through so much already, in a place such as this, having seen first hand just how ill these EMI residents are and seemingly how few staff were employed on a general basis, to manage all these severely mentally and physically ill residents all of which had immensely complex needs! That said, they do manage! In fact they do far more than just 'manage'! They excel in their specialised roles! From cleaner, to cook, from care assistant to nurse, they treat each individual resident as if they were their own family member. My family and I visit Dad daily and without exception, we see the staff upstairs in the EMI unit work tirelessly and empathically, in caring for their residents, from the moment they start their shift til the time they finish and at all times are cheerfully laughing, joking and caring for their residents. And this can be by no means an easy task!! They do care for some extremely challenging behaviours and I admire each one of them. They show genuine care and compassion and a remarkable amount of patience, not only towards accommodating residents, but also well intentioned, oft interfering families like ourselves, of whom each with our particular whims, preferences or concerns, and yet, never a disgruntled, begrudging look comes our way, despite the fact they are always so clearly very busy attending to their residents! What I personally find comforting and refreshing is that resident and family member alike is always welcomed with a smile, a knowing look and above all, honesty, mutual understanding and respect. The genuinely caring, cheerful, hard working staff are without doubt, the home's greatest asset and should be applauded and celebrated as such. My family and I admire them all immensely for the job they do and the way in which they do it as we know only too well that 'caring' for an ill elderly relative can sometimes be seen as a thankless job, but deep down, each of those residents do appreciate and benefit from their care and support. The meals are delicious and nutritious and they dish up some lovely traditional deserts, which go down a treat! There is a lovely little park you can take your family member along to, just outside of the home, and it's lovely to enjoy that much needed 'one to one' quality time with your loved one and get some fresh air. My Dad particularly likes watching the mischievous dogs racing off from their owners! The home is easily accessible by car or public transport (The Barnsley to Doncaster bus stops at many points from Barnsley, Wombwell, Wath, Mexnorough, Conisborough, Balby, etc up to Doncaster) My Dad's wellbeing and dignity has now thankfully been restored at Flower Park, thanks to each member of staff and their down to earth common sense approach to caring. He, along with all our family, had endured such an overwhelmingly traumatic journey prior to coming to Flower park and we had truly given up on him having the opportunity, moreover capacity, to enjoy living out his days in relative comfort and dignity, in a place that quite frankly 'allows' him to be himself, without resorting to a chemical solution, in a safe nurturing environment. For this, our family will always be indebted!
