I cannot say how lucky I consider myself to have found Ty Mair, where my mother spent a little over the last two years of her life. It was refreshing to be made so welcome after looking at several depressing care homes in the area. The size, 74 single rooms, means that there is a qualified nurse on duty most, if not all, of the time. The size applies to food where a good choice is given at all meals and the staff are so anxious to get the residents to eat that often food not on the menu - boiled, fried or scrambled eggs for example, are produced. The open plan kitchen allows visitors to see the exemplary cleanliness of the kitchen. The size also means that there are several lounges for them to use. The rooms are comfortable, many with pleasant views. The en-suites are small, only a toilet and wash hand basin, but when you consider that most residents need help to bath or shower, to include them would be wasteful. Finally the crowning glory of Ty Mair is the staff. Caring and loving. Many of them speak Welsh. Living near Cardiff, I would spend several whole days at Ty Mair each week and I was always made comfortable and welcome and included when tea and coffee and lovely cakes were brought around.
