  • The Review Score (maximum of 10) is made up of a Quality Score (maximum of 5) and Quantity Score (maximum of 5):

    • Quality Score: 5 Points are available for the average rating. For each review the care home / service is rated Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, Poor or Very Poor on a number of areas eg Staff, Management etc. The care home / service receives points for each rating as follows: Excellent = 5. Good = 4. Satisfactory = 3. Poor = 2. Very Poor = 1. These points are added up and then divided by the total number of completed ratings to generate the average rating. (Please note that the ratings of Very Poor and Poor have only been available since the change from Recommendations to Reviews on 7th July 2015.)

      The Quality Score (average rating) of 4.113 for Duchess Nina Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (26 Excellents x 5) + (32 Goods x 4) + (9 Satisfactorys x 3) + (3 Poors x 2) + (1 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 71 Ratings = 4.113

      • Any Recommendation. Before the change from Recommendations to Reviews on 7th July 2015 all feedback was limited to Recommendations (ie positive comments only)

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

      1. 3 points for receiving the first Positive Review.

      2. 0.1 Point per Positive Review, up to a maximum score of 1 Point. (ie a care home / service requires 10 Positive Reviews to receive the maximum score of 1 point.)

      3. (Number of Positive Reviews ÷ number of registered beds) x 2, up to a maximum score of 1 Point. ie a care home / service has to receive a number of Positive Reviews equal to half of the number of registered beds to obtain the maximum score of 1 point. eg a care home / service with 40 registered beds has to receive 20 Positive Reviews to obtain the maximum score of 1 point.

(For Adult Day Care Centres and Extra Care Housing which do not have a registered number of beds, 1) and 2) are replaced by the formula of 0.2 points per Review, up to a maximum score of 2 points. ie a listing needs 10 Reviews to receive the maximum score of 2 points

The Quantity Score of 4 for Duchess Nina Care Home is calculated as follows:

      1. 5 Positive Reviews = 3

      2. 0.1 x 5 Positive Reviews = 0.500

      3. (5 Positive Reviews ÷ 20 Registered Beds) x 2 = 0.500

  • The Review Score is based on user Recommendations/Reviews submitted in the last 2 years. The maximum Review Score is 10. The Overall Average of all the Ratings in the following

6 Reviews is 4.1 out of 5

My father was a resident in Duchess Nina for only a few months due to his advancing dementia and increasing frailty. During this time my family felt his care was very good. Clearly most of the staff were hard-working, kind and compassionate given the hard job they had to do.
However it was evident on several occasions that the care home did not have enough staff on duty to deal with the challenging needs of their residents and we felt that the sitting room environment where most of them sat lacked stimulation. Similarly we felt that there was a lack of activities geared up to my father to try and engage him. We hope that this review will be looked upon constructively and that both staff and residents will benefit from improvements that the owners will implement in the future.

Rory Nicoll, Assistant Operations Manager at Duchess Nina Care Home responded to this review on 04 Apr 2016:

We appreciate your comments, however since this review was completed in December 2015, we have made substantial changes to the home. At that time last year, our old activities co-ordinator was leaving and we had started to recruit a new member of staff to fill this position, which I am pleased to say we have done. The new activities co-ordinator is keen, is full of energy and is very engaging for all residents at Duchess Nina. There are always activities happening at the home and there is sufficient evidence to support this.

We are a highly regulated authority and have to follow and adhere to very strict practices and rules, in particular the number of staff we have on shift at any one time. We use a staffing schedule that is approved by the Care Inspectorate which details the number of staff who require to be on shift at any given time, this takes into account the dependency of the residents in the home. We have always followed this staffing schedule strictly. However, we have changed the shift rotas slightly to accommodate troublesome times, such as breakfast and meal times, this ensures there is even more staff on hand to help out.

Everything is perfect!
Nothing to add.

I am happy with my husbands care. I would be very pleased for find a way of getting more floor space to the residents. I like everyone in the same room, as the carers can see all residents at one time, but the room is rather crushed with chairs, tables, wheelchairs and zimmers. More floor space is needed to allow families more room to sit with the respective resident. My husband has been only 6 months in the home and already I can see the needs for more space and also more carers are needed. I would like to be told on a weekly basis how my husband's behaviour and medication is taking effect.

Rory Nicoll, Assistant Operations Manager at Duchess Nina Care Home responded to this review on 23 Oct 2015:

At Duchess Nina, residents are given the choice where they want to sit, whether they choose to sit in their own bedroom or in the lounge area their choice will be upheld.

We follow (at all times) strict staffing levels across the company and at Duchess Nina. This is devised by the local councils and Care Inspectorate. There is a copy of the staffing level and staffing schedule located in the home, should you wish to see this, please speak to the manager.

We are currently in the planning stage to increase floor space at Duchess Nina, this will hopefully mean the addition of some new bedrooms but also a full length conservatory which will allow us to manage the space better. We aim to have this completed within 2/3 years.

Many of our relatives who have someone in Duchess Nina receive updates, whether that be directly from the home manager or members of staff regarding their loved ones care. We can arrange for this to happen for yourself. This has been passed to the home manager who will be in touch.

We thank you very much for taking the time to complete this review!

First, the facility is clean, well staffed and odour free. D├ęcor is modern. Heat is ample plus. Management are firm but fair. Compassion by some staff is exemplary.

Very good care, clean, friendly. It is our first experience of a nursing home and has been a very good experience for my aunt and family. As she has Parkinson's and dementia. She is treated with dignity and respect. Home baking is excellent.

At Bertinaley Care Ltd we take the safety and security of all our residents as the highest of priorities. The home is safe and secure at all times and unfortunately, we are unable to allow residents to leave the building unattended. Provisions are in place to allow residents to go on excursions and to have trips outside the home on a regular basis.
