The Review Score of 8.259 for Avon Court Care Home is based on 6 Reviews/Recommendations in the last 2 years.

  • The Review Score (maximum of 10) is made up of a Quality Score (maximum of 5) and Quantity Score (maximum of 5):

    • Quality Score: 5 Points are available for the average rating. For each review the care home / service is rated Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, Poor or Very Poor on a number of areas eg Staff, Management etc. The care home / service receives points for each rating as follows: Excellent = 5. Good = 4. Satisfactory = 3. Poor = 2. Very Poor = 1. These points are added up and then divided by the total number of completed ratings to generate the average rating. (Please note that the ratings of Very Poor and Poor have only been available since the change from Recommendations to Reviews on 7th July 2015.)

      The Quality Score (average rating) of 4.471 for Avon Court Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (38 Excellents x 5) + (24 Goods x 4) + (6 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 68 Ratings = 4.471

      • Any Recommendation. Before the change from Recommendations to Reviews on 7th July 2015 all feedback was limited to Recommendations (ie positive comments only)

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

      1. 3 points for receiving the first Positive Review.

      2. 0.1 Point per Positive Review, up to a maximum score of 1 Point. (ie a care home / service requires 10 Positive Reviews to receive the maximum score of 1 point.)

      3. (Number of Positive Reviews ÷ number of registered beds) x 2, up to a maximum score of 1 Point. ie a care home / service has to receive a number of Positive Reviews equal to half of the number of registered beds to obtain the maximum score of 1 point. eg a care home / service with 40 registered beds has to receive 20 Positive Reviews to obtain the maximum score of 1 point.

(For Adult Day Care Centres and Extra Care Housing which do not have a registered number of beds, 1) and 2) are replaced by the formula of 0.2 points per Review, up to a maximum score of 2 points. ie a listing needs 10 Reviews to receive the maximum score of 2 points

The Quantity Score of 3.788 for Avon Court Care Home is calculated as follows:

      1. 6 Positive Reviews = 3

      2. 0.1 x 6 Positive Reviews = 0.600

      3. (6 Positive Reviews ÷ 64 Registered Beds) x 2 = 0.188

My mother spent some time in hospital following a fall at home. She was subsequently transferred for care and assessment to Avon Court, Scholars Lane, Stratford on Avon, pending discharge home.

Avon Court appears purpose built with individual en-suite rooms comfortably equipped and maintained to a high standard. Cleanliness is excellent. Corridors are carpeted; the rooms have level non-slip flooring. Overall, safety appears to be a priority. Care has obviously been taken to ensure that unauthorised people cannot gain access to the premises, and that vulnerable residents cannot simply wander out of the building. Most of the time there are admin staff at the reception area desk monitoring the main entrance. Visitors are encouraged to use hand gels to maintain hand hygiene. Staffing levels were good and staff could be seen on all floors. We never had to go searching for assistance; there was always someone close by. The building's design ensured staff anywhere in a corridor would be able to see someone in distress from a distance and render immediate aid, although there were no such incidents during our visits.

On one day the lift broke down and some residents, including my mum, were unable to return to their own floors until a specialist engineer had attended. They were always accompanied by a member of staff who stayed with them, gave reassurance and chatted to them.

The car park has poor capacity necessitating occasional use of on-street payment parking. Any faults in equipment or building were swiftly attended to by the excellent maintenance man.

It has social rooms - lounges, dining rooms, a good hairdresser and even its own cinema. Help is given to the less mobile to enable them to use the facilities. There are some social activities. The reception area has tables and seating and a small kitchenette for self service beverages, biscuits and cake. This was a naturally well lit area where mum could enjoy the company of guests while watching visitors and other residents come and go.

I don't think our family has a word strong enough to describe the staff. From the outset, they knew my mother's name, stopped to talk to her, checked her regularly, made their affection and respect clear to her, and ensured that her medical, personal and social needs were met with good cheer. Even the maintenance man would knock her door and check she was alright, and would always speak to her if she was elsewhere in the home. His actions typified the staff: friendly, beyond mere duty, attentive, cheerful and reassuring. The nursing staff were attentive, friendly, cheerful and unfailingly professional.

The nursing staff and general care staff worked hard to stabilise her general condition and she was discharged from there with far better mobility and comfort than she had enjoyed for two years. She, and we, were encouraged to do more than sit in her room. Staff were always happy to discuss care with relatives, and always had possession of the facts about her; there was no resort to her file to bring themselves up to date.

Mum moved on today with tears and regrets to a permanent home nearer her family and friends. She received smiles, hugs and good wishes from the staff. Her comment? "I wish I could take them all with me."
