The Review Score of 8.876 for Coppice Lodge is based on 21 Reviews/Recommendations in the last 2 years.

  • The Review Score (maximum of 10) is made up of a Quality Score (maximum of 5) and Quantity Score (maximum of 5):

    • Quality Score: 5 Points are available for the average rating. For each review the care home / service is rated Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, Poor or Very Poor on a number of areas eg Staff, Management etc. The care home / service receives points for each rating as follows: Excellent = 5. Good = 4. Satisfactory = 3. Poor = 2. Very Poor = 1. These points are added up and then divided by the total number of completed ratings to generate the average rating. (Please note that the ratings of Very Poor and Poor have only been available since the change from Recommendations to Reviews on 7th July 2015.)

      The Quality Score (average rating) of 4.251 for Coppice Lodge is calculated as follows: ( (101 Excellents x 5) + (114 Goods x 4) + (34 Satisfactorys x 3) + (2 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 251 Ratings = 4.251

    • Quantity Score: 5 Points are available for the number of 'Positive Reviews' for a care home / service. A Positive Review is defined as:

      • Any Review with 'Extremely Likely' or 'Likely' in answer to the question 'How likely are you to recommend this care provider to friends and family if they needed similar care or treatment?'

      • Any Recommendation. Before the change from Recommendations to Reviews on 7th July 2015 all feedback was limited to Recommendations (ie positive comments only)

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

      1. 3 points for receiving the first Positive Review.

      2. 0.1 Point per Positive Review, up to a maximum score of 1 Point. (ie a care home / service requires 10 Positive Reviews to receive the maximum score of 1 point.)

      3. (Number of Positive Reviews ÷ number of registered beds) x 2, up to a maximum score of 1 Point. ie a care home / service has to receive a number of Positive Reviews equal to half of the number of registered beds to obtain the maximum score of 1 point. eg a care home / service with 40 registered beds has to receive 20 Positive Reviews to obtain the maximum score of 1 point.

(For Adult Day Care Centres and Extra Care Housing which do not have a registered number of beds, 1) and 2) are replaced by the formula of 0.2 points per Review, up to a maximum score of 2 points. ie a listing needs 10 Reviews to receive the maximum score of 2 points

The Quantity Score of 4.625 for Coppice Lodge is calculated as follows:

      1. 20 Positive Reviews = 3

      2. 0.1 x 20 Positive Reviews = 2.000 (maximum score = 1)

      3. (20 Positive Reviews ÷ 64 Registered Beds) x 2 = 0.625

  • The Review Score is based on user Recommendations/Reviews submitted in the last 2 years. The maximum Review Score is 10. There are 5 Points available for the average of all ratings on users Recommendations/Reviews (Excellent 5, Good 4, Satisfactory 3, Poor 2, Very Poor 1). I feel lucky to have got my mum into Coppice Lodge with almost no notice when her partner and carer was hospitalised with a terminal prognosis. She has moderate to severe dementia. First impressions back in August were that it was very smart being newly opened. Facilities etc similar to a hotel. Four or five visits on mum says she is happy and comfortable on each occasion. They seem to organise plenty of entertainment and I can't fault what I have seen of the staff- lots of hugging. Food must be good as mum is putting on weight. Most telling was when I visited with a council worker there to assess mum's capacity. She asked mum where she was and she responded "In a home", "Yes but what sort of home?". After repeating the question to a puzzled and exasperated mum three times mum replied: "Well it's a loving happy home of course!". Nuff said.

Mum is very contented and well looked after, she gets on well with the staff. The staff are always helpful when help is needed by myself or mum. They always keep me informed about mum's health and are quick to get medical help when required. It is a relaxing home to live and visit.

My mother went into the home last month after struggling to care for herself. The staff at the home were very caring and helpful and also accommodation, allowing my mother to go in at very short notice. My mother has enjoyed the care she is receiving and feels secure and welcomed by the staff. All her needs have been met and the staff are available to discuss any issues with them. The recent addition of a coffee bar for residents and visitors has been well received and ensures that visitors feel welcome and not in the way of other residents when visiting their loved ones. My mother has settled very quickly.

My mum has been at the home for almost 4 years and a seen a lot of changes in management and staff. Issues are raised and things change. However, sometimes standards slip i.e. the hoist being left in my mum's room. This is her home, not a storeroom so I just wheel it out and leave it in the corridor. I feel more than comfortable to raise things with the manager. I am still concerned she is not eating properly i.e. mashed potato and gravy for lunch and bread and butter or jam sandwiches for tea. Purely because she is not being tempted. I even typed up a list of food that she likes.

Very pleased with the way it's run, they have a singer on nearly every week and party night which includes a nice meal and a glass of wine. The rooms all have ensuite with TV and DVD and a decent size fridge. The staff are really friendly and caring, you can come and go whenever you want and you treat it like home. If you want a coffee or a meal you are always welcome to have one. I would rate it 10 out of 10.

Since the assignment of new manager, everything about the home has tremendously improved, it has come alive! Prior to this, the home was very, very poor in all aspects, apart from the caring staff, who despite abysmal management and lack of direction, continued to do their best.
Commendations to laundry and catering staff, always doing their best. Secretary has good communication skills. However, to date, the gardens and outside appearance are dreadful and require regular maintenance. The frontage is dire, probably due to understaffing.

I think on the whole that standards in the care home are good. However, from experience of visiting people over at least 3 years and in different parts of the building, I have seen that's standards are not always the same all over.
I also think that the owners do not always know the direct needs of residents or even the staff they employ. Numbers of staff on duty at certain times of the day leave a lot to be desired, particularity early evening and change over time. Dementia residents need more attention and sometimes one to one care, but staff also need to have variety and space from demanding residents.

Coppice Lodge provided a wonderful environment for my late mother's final months. Despite dementia and then mobility issues she was always treated as an individual. Her personal likes and dislikes were taken into account and she was accorded all the care, consideration and dignity she would have wished for. The staff were professional and sensitive. They welcomed me as a friend when I visited and supported me at difficult times. During my many visits I never saw anything which caused me concern in the treatment of some quite challenging residents.

There appears to be changes with the new manager who listens and ready to help with any worries and concerns. It appears that there will be more activities etc. Unfortunately my mother doesn't choose to take part, but good for other residents. I would wish for opportunities for outings in the future. I am relied upon by mum to get her out of the building. I know staff shortage can be a problem. The carers are all good, caring and kind, but feel they are overstretched some days as there times at weekends when its hard to speak to someone by phone. They do their best though.

Thank you for taking the time to review Coppice Lodge and for bringing these matters to our attention. Ideal Carehomes has recently employed three Regional Activities Executives who will be tasked with assisting our homes to organise a varied range of activities including trips out for the residents. We hope that these changes will help you to be able to take you mum out more often, and on more varied trips. If you would like to discuss this matter further, please feel free to contact the home directly.

I am generally satisfied with the standard of care except;
General appearance of my wife , I would like more attention to hair etc.
I am certain that many of the clothes worn by my wife are not hers.
Furniture needs cleaning/replacing (large).
Could I also suggest please that when the home is closed for any reason that I (and other relatives) are told by email. I have twice visited the home to find it closed.

Of all the care homes we looked at Coppice Lodge was by far the best. We are pleased with the care and information given to us by the staff. We have had some issues but these were dealt with very professionally. My only concern is the change of personal but I think this is the norm with the care professional. The hairdressing service is great and chiropodist. My mother-in-law can be quite difficult but most of the staff deal with her very well.

Overall I am very happy with the care received by my friend who has very severe dementia and has lost the ability to communicate. The staff are caring and the food excellent. More thought needs to be given, however, to activities on the dementia units. Scary Halloween films with curtains drawn to evoke cinema are unsuited to people who hallucinate and think they have to find their way home. Music needs to be age appropriate. Pop music or heart, smooth or capital radio may seem "old" to a young carer but contrary to their belief people between 85-95 were not listening to pop at the time they went into care. CD's of soundtracks of musicals or songs of the 40's, 50's or 60's along with light popular classical music would much better evoke youthful memories and would have a calming effect.

Whenever we visit our friend we find a warm welcome by staff, always a cup of tea or coffee offered. Our friend appears to have settled here well and appears contented - despite the fact she is almost blind and her hearing has deteriorated, making it hard to have conversations as I feel that I am shouting and everyone else can hear. She also says they don't have any activities but I think this is because its too much trouble for her to join in. The home is always very clean and warm. Staff are very friendly and appear to know their jobs well. She tells me the meals are very good too. My one bug bare is having to lean over when talking to her as I suffer arthritis and back problems, making it uncomfortable and painful. I am 75 years old myself.

Catherine Goddard joined Ideal Carehomes in September 2016 and is Regional Activities Executive for the Midlands area. She covers five homes in this area and works closely with Ideal Carehomes’ other Regional Activities Executives.
