The Review Score of 9.456 for Brunel House is based on 26 Reviews/Recommendations in the last 2 years.

  • The Review Score (maximum of 10) is made up of a Quality Score (maximum of 5) and Quantity Score (maximum of 5):

    • Quality Score: 5 Points are available for the average rating. For each review the care home / service is rated Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, Poor or Very Poor on a number of areas eg Staff, Management etc. The care home / service receives points for each rating as follows: Excellent = 5. Good = 4. Satisfactory = 3. Poor = 2. Very Poor = 1. These points are added up and then divided by the total number of completed ratings to generate the average rating. (Please note that the ratings of Very Poor and Poor have only been available since the change from Recommendations to Reviews on 7th July 2015.)

      The Quality Score (average rating) of 4.656 for Brunel House is calculated as follows: ( (212 Excellents x 5) + (86 Goods x 4) + (10 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 308 Ratings = 4.656

    • Quantity Score: 5 Points are available for the number of 'Positive Reviews' for a care home / service. A Positive Review is defined as:

      • Any Review with 'Extremely Likely' or 'Likely' in answer to the question 'How likely are you to recommend this care provider to friends and family if they needed similar care or treatment?'

      • Any Recommendation. Before the change from Recommendations to Reviews on 7th July 2015 all feedback was limited to Recommendations (ie positive comments only)

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

      1. 3 points for receiving the first Positive Review.

      2. 0.1 Point per Positive Review, up to a maximum score of 1 Point. (ie a care home / service requires 10 Positive Reviews to receive the maximum score of 1 point.)

      3. (Number of Positive Reviews ÷ number of registered beds) x 2, up to a maximum score of 1 Point. ie a care home / service has to receive a number of Positive Reviews equal to half of the number of registered beds to obtain the maximum score of 1 point. eg a care home / service with 40 registered beds has to receive 20 Positive Reviews to obtain the maximum score of 1 point.

(For Adult Day Care Centres and Extra Care Housing which do not have a registered number of beds, 1) and 2) are replaced by the formula of 0.2 points per Review, up to a maximum score of 2 points. ie a listing needs 10 Reviews to receive the maximum score of 2 points

The Quantity Score of 4.8 for Brunel House is calculated as follows:

      1. 26 Positive Reviews = 3

      2. 0.1 x 26 Positive Reviews = 2.600 (maximum score = 1)

      3. (26 Positive Reviews ÷ 65 Registered Beds) x 2 = 0.800

  • The Review Score is based on user Recommendations/Reviews submitted in the last 2 years. The maximum Review Score is 10. There are 5 Points available for the average of all ratings on users Recommendations/Reviews (Excellent 5, Good 4, Satisfactory 3, Poor 2, Very Poor 1). The carers at the home are brilliant with all the residents. Last week some of the residents and six carers went in the mini bus to Weston-Super-Mare and returned with lots of photos of happy residents walking on the beach, eating ice cream, fish and chips etc! Most days I bring my husband home or go for a run in the care and there are never any problems about going back into the home.

I am totally satisfied with all aspects of my husbands care at Brunel House. The staff are all excellent and caring (although at times I feel overworked) the rooms and public areas are always clean and tidy. The food he receives is very good.

My father died on 16 May, despite a critical illness, he refused to go to hospital as he was desperate to spend his last weeks at Brunel. The care home team did their utmost to ensure his well being. Constant checking, monitoring and giving emotional support went on both day and night. Members of the family were able to stay overnight whenever they wanted and they too were supported and kept informed. Nothing was too much trouble. At all times they were professional and caring to us all. We can not fault their support and perfectly understand why my father had insisted 'I want to stay in Brunel'.

Both my parents have just moved into Brunel House. My husband and I visited with no appointment, we were welcomed in and given a guided tour by a lady, who was extremely friendly and answered all our questions in great detail. We visited several times on the following days bringing other family members and my parents, and on each occasion we were greeted with the same friendly staff. They have now moved in and have nearly been there a month, the home is comfortable all staff cheerful and friendly. My parents are extremely happy in their surroundings!!

My mother was admitted in November 2015 for palliative care when transferred from hospital. She was in a very poor way and very frail. She left Brunel House on the 4th of May 2016 after being nursed back to full health. She is walking well and is almost totally independent thanks to the careful and considerate care received form Brunel staff. She is 96 years old!

The overall standard of accommodation is excellent and the staff do a wonderful job of caring for the residents. The little touches like the reminiscence room, chickens, secure outdoor space, photos on walls, puzzles on walls, personal artefacts, prams and dolls etc. all make for an enriched living environment.

I came to a residents meeting in Jan 2016. It was well attended, we were all encouraged to ask questions, all of which were answered. Since then nearly all of the issues have been dealt with. I have really been impressed with the staff and the kindness they show to relatives and most of all residents. It is never easy moving into a care home, and it's thanks to the staff that my mother has settled in so well. They always have time to talk to her, recently mum became quite ill and thanks to the Dr and staff she is getting better. Carry on the good work. Thank you.

My relative has been in Brunel House approx 18 months. They are frail but do not have dementia/Alzheimer's. The staff at this residence have always been good/caring however since a new manager took over, patient and relative comments are being taken on board and acted on. Staff have now been granted to give consistence both to residents, relatives but also for each other. The atmosphere is calmer, confident and the service far more efficient. Standards of cleanliness have improved in some ways though main meals continue to lack imagination/flavour. It seems there is much better support from management and a feeling of progress and confidence.

My wife has been here a week. We find the standard of caring has greatly improved since February 2015. The food is adequate, let down by poor evening meals though, many elderly people do not require much to eat in the evening we realise that but the staff could make more effort in preparing evening snacks/meals. Soups are below the standard of the hospital.

Terry Allen, Marketing at Brunel House responded to this review on 26 Mar 2016:

This reviewer has added a negative comment about the food at Brunel House, however the score given for the food was Good.

My dad moved to this care home 3 months ago and has settled in very well. He is extremely well cared for in a gentle manner. The home is immaculate and the garden a great pleasure to dad. It is a real comfort to know he is safe in such a friendly, fabulous home, with brilliant staff.

The staff at Brunel House are extremely caring. There is always a smiling face and a joke. They treat the "guests" with respect and genuine kindness. They try to be flexible with individual guests needs and wishes. I don't think any "care" home can be perfect but Brunel House does strive to improve and listen to relatives concerns.

Overall I feel my mother is treated well, with dignity and respect and kindness. Her basic needs are met, she is fit and well physically although due to her condition she struggles mentally. the staff are always friendly and helpful to both her and myself, acting with great patience and understanding at times. The activities are well run although I do not always feel my mother makes full use of what is on offer she perhaps needs some more encouragement to take part? But, I am very happy with her care and treatment at Brunel House.

My husband, who died on 29th December has been a resident at Brunel House for 2 years. He first stayed there on respite care basis, while I had a hip replacement In March 2014. Because of my age and the limitations of my treatment, the family and I decided to make him a permanent resident. He did fret for a bit at first, but I (at 87) could not give him the necessary attention. He accepted the situation and has been very comfortable there, well liked by all staff, whether carers or administrators. I have no regrets about his treatment - the staff are friendly (to residents and to relatives) and very welcoming - he has always been kept clean and comfortable.

Mum went into Brunel House in September. We have found the team there professional, warm and supportive with a real understanding of and empathy for her Alzheimer's diagnosis. The home is war and bright and the rooms comfy. The food is good and the activities varied. Prior to Brunel House mum was in hospital for two months and with all the upheaval it took her time to settle but she now is comfy and calmer.

The activities laid on for patients with different needs re idea - especially winter. They have been well thought out and have given my friend a chance to change her environment which I feel is important. Having spent her life farming, being able to sit in a well kept garden with our little dog is her chief enjoyment! Above all I was eventually able to speak in privacy to the nursing home doctor and ask her outright what her attitude to palliative was was. I do not like people to be labelled even though my friend's problems are as much medical as mental. Some people could put the wrong connotation on things. One thing I do like to see is my friend dressed appropriately for the day. I think she is accepting this better when staff help and encourage her. I think being able to wear a hat inside or outside the ward possibly makes her feel 'individual'.

I was involved with Brunel House from Nov 2014 to May 2015. I visited my friend many afternoons and often "popped in" unannounced. My friend was not "easy resident" initially no sight or hearing but all her mental faculties. At all times she was treated with the utmost respect, patience and understanding. She was always encouraged and helped to be involved with the many activities I, also, was "roped in" to participate with her. The senior management were very ready to accommodate and adapt to her treatment. This is an excellent house newly built with good all -round facilities. I have nothing but praise for all the staff and a visitor I enjoyed their friendliness and good sense of fun.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Jackie Seaman (Manager) and all the staff at Brunel House for the brilliant care they gave to my late father, Walter C, with especial thanks to the nursing staff during his final few days.
He was, without exception, treated with the utmost respect, kindness and love. The staff always responded so positively to his every need and "Went the extra mile" to ensure he was as happy and comfortable as was possible. They made such a difference to his wellbeing and dad always said how happy and content he was.
A more professional, dedicated team would be extremely hard to find. It stands out that the difference is they genuinely CARE. The family thank you from the bottom of their hearts.

My father-in-law recently spent seven weeks at Brunel House and dies whilst a resident there. During his brief stay, he was treated with kindness, empathy and dignity by all the staff. But a special mention is to be extended to the care manager, Jackie, who extended the afore mentioned qualities to us also , the family. This gave us support in what has been a most difficult year.

My father has received excellent care and support since moving to Brunel in April. Nothing is too much for the staff, they are competent, friendly, kind and reassuring. They go out of their way to ensure my fathers needs are met. Making a decision to place a family member in residential care is an emotional and stressful time for all concerned; staff supported all of us through the process. I thoroughly recommend Brunel House, if the decision has to be made this the place to be.

Job Title: Care Manager

Description:

I have had a varied career, having come from a military background as a Royal Navy diver and medic, before leaving in 1995 to work for the NHS. I later qualified as a Registered General Nurse before moving into elderly care home management in Cornwall and most recently moving to Bristol managing for another large care provider.

It is important to Myself that those in my care lead happy and fulfilling lives, whilst maintaining control and having the ability to chose the care and support they receive.

‘I feel privileged to be able to make a difference to people’s lives every day. If I am assured that the residents and their families are happy with the care they are receiving then I know I am doing my job right. I am looking forward to working with and supporting the residents in a variety of ways.
