This Review Score of 9.794 is made up of a Quality Score of 4.816 Points (maximum of 5) relating to the rating and a Quantity Score of 4.978 Points (maximum of 5) relating to the number of positive Reviews/Recommendations.

  • The maximum Review Score for a care home / service is 10 and it is based on the published (including Restricted Publication) Reviews in the last 2 years. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

The Review Score of 9.794 for Bowes House is based on 44 Reviews/Recommendations in the last 2 years.

  • The Review Score (maximum of 10) is made up of a Quality Score (maximum of 5) and Quantity Score (maximum of 5):

    • Quality Score: 5 Points are available for the average rating. For each review the care home / service is rated Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, Poor or Very Poor on a number of areas eg Staff, Management etc. The care home / service receives points for each rating as follows: Excellent = 5. Good = 4. Satisfactory = 3. Poor = 2. Very Poor = 1. These points are added up and then divided by the total number of completed ratings to generate the average rating. (Please note that the ratings of Very Poor and Poor have only been available since the change from Recommendations to Reviews on 7th July 2015.)

      The Quality Score (average rating) of 4.816 for Bowes House is calculated as follows: ( (445 Excellents x 5) + (59 Goods x 4) + (17 Satisfactorys x 3) + (1 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 522 Ratings = 4.816

    • Quantity Score: 5 Points are available for the number of 'Positive Reviews' for a care home / service. A Positive Review is defined as:

      • Any Review with 'Extremely Likely' or 'Likely' in answer to the question 'How likely are you to recommend this care provider to friends and family if they needed similar care or treatment?'

      • Any Recommendation. Before the change from Recommendations to Reviews on 7th July 2015 all feedback was limited to Recommendations (ie positive comments only)

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

      1. 3 points for receiving the first Positive Review.

      2. 0.1 Point per Positive Review, up to a maximum score of 1 Point. (ie a care home / service requires 10 Positive Reviews to receive the maximum score of 1 point.)

      3. (Number of Positive Reviews ÷ number of registered beds) x 2, up to a maximum score of 1 Point. ie a care home / service has to receive a number of Positive Reviews equal to half of the number of registered beds to obtain the maximum score of 1 point. eg a care home / service with 40 registered beds has to receive 20 Positive Reviews to obtain the maximum score of 1 point.

(For Adult Day Care Centres and Extra Care Housing which do not have a registered number of beds, 1) and 2) are replaced by the formula of 0.2 points per Review, up to a maximum score of 2 points. ie a listing needs 10 Reviews to receive the maximum score of 2 points

The Quantity Score of 4.978 for Bowes House is calculated as follows:

      1. 44 Positive Reviews = 3

      2. 0.1 x 44 Positive Reviews = 4.400 (maximum score = 1)

      3. (44 Positive Reviews ÷ 90 Registered Beds) x 2 = 0.978

  • The Review Score is based on user Recommendations/Reviews submitted in the last 2 years. The maximum Review Score is 10. There are 5 Points available for the average of all ratings on users Recommendations/Reviews (Excellent 5, Good 4, Satisfactory 3, Poor 2, Very Poor 1). There are 5 Points available for the total number of positive Recommendations/Reviews submitted in relation to the number of beds at the Care Home.

  • Before 1st July 2015 carehome.co.uk only accepted Recommendations (positive comments only) and the Ratings were limited to Excellent, Good & Satisfactory. These are marked up as Recommendations.

  • As of 1st July 2015 carehome.co.uk changed from Recommendations to Reviews (positive and negative comments) and added the Ratings Poor and Very Poor. These are marked up as Reviews. Between 1st July and 31st December 2015, we are still processing a number of Recommendations from Recommendation cards sent out before 1st July (These are marked up as Recommendations).

Bowes House is a warm and friendly place with a great team and atmosphere. The team worked really hard to ensure Mum's every need was met. Mum had a beautiful room with an en suite wet room, she had a lovely view over the fields. Mum enjoyed socialising with other residents and also using the hair salon and beautician on a weekly basis. The food was excellent with a good menu choice each day. By the end of her stay at Bowes House Mum had regained her confidence and was able to return to independent living in her own home. Thank you to all the team for making Mum's time at Bowes House so happy. Bowes House is like a 5 star hotel with care.

I was a bit apprehensive about leaving my husband here and yes it took a while for him to settle, but after a couple of weeks he looks really well. This respite break has certainly relaxed him. There are opportunities here for him to participate if he's interested. The activities member of staff is brilliant with the way she encourages the residents.

My mother had a series of small strokes and after searching for a home I found Bowes House. The care has been one of excellent. Staff are constant in their care and genuine affection for my mother. Since moving into the nursing section my mother has regained her health so now she is in the residential part.
She loves the activities and talks fondly of everyone there. I really can recommend this home, it is expensive but seeing how my mother has regained her zest for life again - it is worth it.

My 94 year old mother, who has dementia, had excellent respite care. At our enquiry visit my wife and I knew that my mother would be well cared for in a lovely environment. The varied daily organised activities were just what she needed to keep her stimulated. The welcoming reception/cafe/lounge area immediately gives an atmosphere of an active care home. All the staff were kind, caring and showed empathy. You could tell from feedback discussions that the staff had got to know mum and how to calm her down. All the public areas were clean, tidy, well laid out and odour free. The bright and airy bedrooms were clean and fully equipped. We would enjoy our holiday knowing that mum was being cared for by excellent staff in a well organised care home.

On the whole I am more than satisfied with my mum's care and her well-being, as a resident of Bowes House. I do have some minor concerns with her care in relation to a pressure sore she developed last year. I cannot fault the nursing care she received I just feel that ever since this sore developed, the home has been extremely over cautious about her time out of bed, which has had a possible detrimental effect on her happiness and well-being by interacting with the other residents. She has to have a gluten free diet due to suffering with this and I feel the diet options are a bit limited.

Resident arrived late evening, was greeted well and with the offer of a drink. Not given any info on meal times or activities etc.
We (as friends) think the accommodation and staff are lovely.
Our friendly is not so happy - but she is demanding!
Arrival was Friday evening - not ideal - but no-ones fault.
OT and nurse assessment at home thorough and helpful.
Monday pm - already an improvement as she is already rising easier.

Bowes House has been a wonderful haven for my wife, for which I previously cared for over some 12 years. The nursing and caring staff fully understand my wife's physical and mental health problems and are always quick to react when difficult situations have arisen indeed in some cases they have proved to be proactive. The home is well set up with a welcoming atmosphere which hits the visitors as soon as they come through the door.

my mother moved here 6 days ago from hospital for end of life care. The care is excellent. It is very person centred. Staff take time to find out what she wants and offer variety with food and drink. They have already built up a good relationship with her and she feels settled and comfortable. 2 days ago she asked if she could stay for another day - a measure of how much she likes it. Staff supportive of me too.

In a time of crisis when due to my ill health, and the need for my mother to take up residential care the team here were amazing. Karen Milligan pulled out all the stops! Helena Barrow

Job Title: Home Manager

Description:

Helena Barrow is home manager at Bowes House. Here she explains why a can-do attitude to care is the key to success.

After qualifying as a registered nurse in 1980 I worked at a general hospital for 21 years before moving on to manage care homes. I’m also a level 7 Chartered Manager (CMI) and a qualified mediator.

When the opportunity arose to join Care UK in 2014 I was delighted. It was an easy decision to make because they have a great reputation in the care sector for being both a supportive and forward-thinking care provider.

To be an effective care home manager and leader it’s important to have a broad mind and equally broad shoulders. A positive can-do approach to care, excellent communications skills, extensive knowledge and a good understanding of person-centred care are also important qualities to possess.

Over the coming months I plan to build on the great work that’s already been done at Bowes House to maintain the very highest standards of care. Our vision for the future is to create a five-star care home that people in our local community would be happy to live in either permanently or temporarily.

When I’m not working I enjoy spending time with my three children and two grandchildren. I’m also kept busy caring for my three horses and my very loyal dog Snoopy. As a family we enjoy riding, walking and playing.

Job Title: Customer Relations Manager

Description:

I am passionate about people and making a difference to people’s lives. I wanted to work for Care UK (I joined in May 2014) because I was keen to work with families and the elderly, and I wanted to help people through the process of choosing the right care home for their loved one. The environment I work in is lovely and the work itself is extremely rewarding – I’m very proud of Bowes House and what we do here.

In a previous role I worked with the long term unemployed, helping them to get back into employment, but I actually use many of the same skills now, including empathy, listening and relationship-building skills. Away from work, I love socialising, eating out and travelling to warm countries!

Job Title: Head Housekeeper

Description:

I joined Bowes House when it opened because I was attracted by Care UK’s approach to care. I came from a 43-bed nursing home where I was domestic manager. Bowes House is twice the size! Joining any new company is always a challenge and there have been lots of policies and procedures to get familiar with, but it’s been great to work with everyone to put all the pieces into place.

I love working with all the team here and it’s a lovely feeling to see the home looking fabulous and know that we’ve done a great job. I’m looking forward to seeing Bowes House really get established, and seeing more new residents settling in.

Job Title: Activities Coordinator

Description:

My skills include events management, training and working with people with dementia, but this role makes full use of all of them. Enthusiasm is vital in this role and it also helps if you’re a good listener. I love having one-to-ones with residents and finding out about their lives as well as what they want to get out of the activities we do.

As Bowes House is a new care home I’ve had a blank canvas to work with, which has been both challenging and very exciting. A big highlight already for me has been planning and arranging a summer barbecue. We had a big turnout from the local community and raised a lot of money for a local charity.
