Boucherne is a historic property situated in the scenic surroundings of Maldon. The home has been lovingly renovated over the years in order to offer a homely residential care service to older people with care needs but at the same time preserving the much loved character of the building. A conscious effort is made to maintain the atmosphere of a warm and comfortable home.

Equipped and updated to facilitate the most up to date forms of care, the accommodation includes assisted bathrooms and wheelchair accessible showers, with open plan living areas and en-suite bedrooms.

Boucherne has lovely Gardens which are particularly popular with residents during the warmer weather. Residents can enjoy the outdoors by relaxing in a shaded outdoor space taking in the beautiful colours of the garden. Carers are always on hand throughout the day and night to help with any issues.

My Aunt received excellent care at the Boucherne, and for her, it really did feel like home. We were so grateful to find a place that felt like a family, not just a facility. The staff were always warm, attentive, and genuinely caring; nothing ever seemed too much trouble. They took the time to get
to know her as a person, not just a resident, and that made all the difference. The home itself is comfortable and well kept, and there was always a lovely, relaxed atmosphere whenever we visited. We could see she was happy, and that gave us tremendous peace of mind. We'd wholeheartedly recommend the Boucherne to anyone looking for a care home in the Maldon area.

I live on my own and following an injury I had to go into respite care with some dread misgivings. Following a recommendation from a nurse friend I chose Boucherne in Maldon. They were able to take me for two weeks respite care. The care was impressive with changes to my bed because I could not sleep
in the smaller bed. I had amazing night care from very experienced carers. The catering was better than some resturants, everything form fresh food and a cook who caters to all needs. I was booked for two weeks and finished staying for 5 weeks. I spent my Birthday with a cake and candles. It is a home-from-home atmosphere.
Reply from Satyan, Management Team at BoucherneThank you Janette for taking the time to provide feedback - it means a lot to us. We are very pleased to have had the opportunity to help you and are grateful for your kind words!

My mother in law spent seven months in Boucherne until February this year. The atmosphere as soon as you walk in is warm and friendly and the owners and staff are very caring and approachable. My mother in law particularly enjoyed the musical entertainment but also the other activities organised. Overall
very positive experience and as a family appreciated the support given at the time.

My Mother-in-Law originally went to Boucherne for two weeks respite following a couple of falls. She felt very safe there and went from refusing food to eating everything put in front of her. She loved being able to have a bath. Within the two weeks she was back to her old self. She'd put on weight
and was once again taking an interest in life around her. To our amazement she decided to make the arrangement permanent.
I cannot speak highly enough of the staff who were so kind and caring. They really go to a lot of trouble to arrange many different activities and make sure that all the residents are well cared for. The experience has changed my conceot of residential care to a very positive one.

We searched for a long time to find the right care home for mum. When we found the Boucherne we knew it was the one we wanted. From the first moment, mum felt at home. She loved her room, ate more than I'd seen her eat in years and formed close bonds with many of the carers. The very special mixture
of care and the family feeling at the Boucherne meant that I never had to worry about her wellbeing and happiness. I was welcome to come and go as I wanted and felt fully informed about mum's care. I'd like to thank the owner and staff for making her final months such a positive experience. It was life changing for us all and I am so grateful.

Mum has been at Boucherne since last September after a very difficult time in her home. She settled in very well and it was such a relief to see her begin to thrive straight away.
The environment is always clean, homely and welcoming. There are many activities for the residents - the visiting puppies
and the belly dancers particularly delighted my mum! There are also trips out organised regularly, for example for a meal out on the quay or recently a big Christmas party with residents from other local homes. It is always great to see the photos on social media.
The food is home-cooked and the garden and decking lovely to sit out in summer.
The best thing about Boucherne though is the care, compassion and good humour of all the staff there. There genuinely is a unique family feel to Boucherne and I am so pleased my mum is there.

My mum was luckily able to secure a place at Boucherne after a fire in her flat. She was in a pretty bad way, compounded by her suffering from bone cancer. She has been welcomed by both the staff and the residents and has settled in well. The staff - all of them - are kind, attentive, supportive, friendly
and professional.
Residents have three proper meals a day, have their medication at the right times, have people visiting for various activities and a lovely garden to sit in or walk around. Family can visit at any time, no need to call ahead.
The building is very attractive - along with the gardens - and looks like a home, not an institution.
It's easy to contact the manager by phone or email. It's not just a friendly, caring place, it's well-run.
I feel very grateful that Mum has found such a place to spend her last days.

My mother is very happy, and the care she receives is very good. We are always welcome when we visit, and we often just pop in as we are local to the home. I think it would be nice to have regular reviews and updates, even on email or the resident and what's going on in the home.

My mother-in-law moved into Boucherene care home on the 26th July 2023, from the moment my mother-in-law arrived at the home she was made very welcome. She was introduced to every member of staff on duty including the cook who were all very friendly. The food is beautiful and my mother-in-law loves
it and within a week of moving in she is a different person, she looks so well, she is enjoying the company and activities held within the home. She appears to be gaining weight. It was a worrying time for family members but management and staff give us reassurance.
Thank you to the home manager, deputy manager and all of the staff team at Boucherne Care Home.

My mother was no longer able to live at home in safety after much research we decided to try Boucherne. Everything has gone extremely smoothly and both the home and its staff have been wonderful. I cannot thank the manager and her team enough for the excellent care they all provide. I know she is 110% looked after. From the moment she arrived, she was treated like one of the family. Nothing is too much trouble for them. I would definitely recommend the Boucherne to anyone whose loved one can
no longer look after themselves in their own home. The decor is lovely and clean and the gardens are just gorgeous. Food is freshly prepared and a glass of wine with her lunch or dinner. I have already told my children, this is where I would be happy should I ever needed looking after. The Boucherne is more like a home from home and once again I would never look anywhere else for a loved one to be cared for. The excellent service they provide is outstanding.

Boucherne is like a home-from-home for my sister, whose mental health has been transformed since she arrived in November 2019 in a very bad state and seriously underweight. With the good food at Boucherne, she is now needing a whole new wardrobe.
Boucherne managed to keep Covid 19 at bay until the
very last minute, and have been meticulous in keeping the residents safe. The staff have been exceptional in going the extra mile and are always friendly and helpful.
Reply from Ann Barlow, Manager at BoucherneThank you very much for your kind words. Your sister is a valuable member of Boucherne as she now helps lookout for the other residents who are less able.

My Mum has been resident at Boucherne for 4.5 years and I have always been entirely happy with her care. All the staff are so lovely with all the residents; they are treated with respect and love at all times. Boucherne is an old farm house and has a cosy family feel which Mum loves. The food is
nutritious and wholesome just like Mum used to cook for us! All residents if able, are encouraged to walk to the dining rooms for breakfast, lunch and dinner giving them the all important exercise they need. I would be more than happy to recommend this marvellous home to anyone.

My mum has lived at Boucherne for over seven years and we are so happy that she made that choice. The staff are lovely, endlessly patient people, devoted to making every resident feel supported and contented. Home-cooked meals every day keep everyone healthy and well-fed, and individual requirements
and preferences are always catered for. Obviously, this last year has been an enormous challenge for the owners, manager and staff, but they have coped magnificently, putting in many long hours with encouraging words and smiles to allay residents anxieties, even when the going has been extremely tough. We have missed being able to pop in every couple of days to visit Mum and catch up with everyone (they do feel like part of the family) but we've been kept fully up to date with all developments via email and phone call and have been able to enjoy suitably distanced visiting throughout the year.

Current Review Score: 9.4 (9.426)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.4 (9.426) out of 10 for Boucherne is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 11 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.8 out of 5 from 11 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.651 for Boucherne is calculated as follows: ( (84 Excellents x 5) + (40 Goods x 4) + (2 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 126 Ratings = 4.651
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.775 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Boucherne is based on 11 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 = 3.775
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 24 registered maximum number of service users is 4.8, which has been reached with 11 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
