The Woodhouse Hospital

Lockwood Road, Cheadle, Stoke-on-Trent ST10 4QU

The Woodhouse Hospital, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire
The Woodhouse Hospital
The Woodhouse Hospital

The Woodhouse hospital provides specialist treatment and rehabilitation - including locked rehabilitation and a low secure hospital environment - for men and women with a learning disability, challenging behaviours and ASD/autism spectrum condition in small, gender specific units. Patients may also have been diagnosed with complex conditions including mental health problems or a personality disorder, and they may also have forensic histories with offending backgrounds.

Each service within the hospital is staffed independently by a dedicated team of nurses and support workers. The Woodhouse service provides a range of individualised care pathways in order to move patients progressively to smaller and more independent environments prior to discharge into the community. The specialist rehabilitation programmes are centred on one of the specialist care pathways designed for patients - these are, an autistic spectrum condition pathway, a sexualised behaviour pathway and a low secure pathway.

To support and compliment the rehabilitation treatment programmes, within the hospital setting is a fully accredited open learning centre where individuals are able to achieve educational and vocational qualifications led by qualified teaching staff.

This low security hospital is registered with the Care Quality Commission and able to accept adults with learning disabilities, Asperger's Syndrome or ASD/autistic spectrum conditions that have been detained under the Mental Health Act (1983). The learning centre at the hospital is externally inspected and regulated by the National Open College Network.

Reviews

7.4 The Woodhouse Hospital has a Review Score of 7.4 (7.411)

The Review Score of 7.4 (maximum of 10) for The Woodhouse Hospital is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 3.9 out of 5 from 6 Reviews over all time. This Average Rating is also the rating value for The Woodhouse Hospital in Google's Search Results - more info

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 3 out of 5 from 2 positive Reviews in the last 12 months.

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating of all Reviews over all time. For each review the Mental Health Hospital / service is rated Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, Poor or Very Poor on a number of areas eg Staff, Management etc. The Mental Health Hospital receives points for each rating as follows: Excellent = 5. Good = 4. Satisfactory = 3. Poor = 2. Very Poor = 1. These points are added up and then divided by the total number of completed ratings to generate the average rating.

    The Average Rating of 3.953 for The Woodhouse Hospital is calculated as follows: ( (17 Excellents x 5) + (33 Goods x 4) + (9 Satisfactorys x 3) + (4 Poors x 2) + (1 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 64 Ratings = 3.953

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 12 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with 'Extremely Likely' or 'Likely' in answer to the question 'How likely are you to recommend this Mental Health Hospital to friends and family if they needed similar care or treatment?'

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 5 Positive Reviews, 3 points for the first Positive Review and then 0.25 Points for each of the next 4 Positive Reviews.

    2. 1 point is available for reaching a target number of Positive Reviews based on 20% of the number of registered beds. If the target is partially reached then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Mental Health Hospital with 50 registered beds has a target of 10 Positive Reviews, if it has 10 or more Positive Reviews it will receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews will receive 0.7 points.

The 3.458 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for The Woodhouse Hospital is based on 2 positive Reviews in the last 12 months and is calculated as follows:

    1. 3 + 0.25 = 3.25

    2. Target of 9.6 positive Reviews (48 registered beds ÷ 5). 2 Reviews ÷ 9.6 Target = 0.208

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

Overall I have been very happy with my son's care and support. Sometimes I do feel a little bit disconnected though because I've never seen my son's room it makes me feel like he's in a prison rather than a hospital. I try not to dwell on it too much because my son is very happy and settled there and the care he receives is excellent.

Overall the staff are good. My son has been here for 2 and a half years and is ready to move on. Communication is not always good as I do not always receive a true story from my son. There should be a more structured routine which is adhered to.
Have suggested a local farm placement 6 months ago but had no action taken.

Situated in a truly magnificent rural setting, The Woodhouse Hospital is surrounded by stunning countryside. The staff are polite and welcoming, although some phone conversations with my son were terminated far too quickly and I wonder if it was a programme on TV they wanted to get back to? The fundamental flaw in the whole care system is that there is no incentive for the care provider to advance the patient/service user because they end up losing the care package. It is my view that my son has been held back from achieving even greater progress. The main entrance needs a porch as you get soaked in the rain and there are no overnight facilities for relatives.

We were made really welcome, the staff are very friendly and provide sandwiches at lunch times. We come to see my nephew, but sometimes he doesn't want to see anyone, but we always stop and leave him some goodies. We have to travel a very long way to see him, but we would prefer for him to stop at The Woodhouse as he has settled down, every time he has been moved he has been unsettled.
