Green Leaf Programme - Swanton Care Centre

Recipient: Swanton Care Centre

Date: Wednesday 31 Oct 2012

Swanton Care Centre was picked by Barchester's environment team to participate in a new home-based pilot initiative called the 'Green Leaf' programme, which was introduced to ultimatly reduce our carbon footprint, financial performance and to engage and motivate staff. This initiative has provided opportunities to engage the workforce and for individuals to display innovation and creativity. The scheme was provisionally rolled out to 12 homes who had expressed an interest.

A small team was formed and driven by a 'Green Leaf Champion' where they set out to meet the relavent standards. Those standards included:

Radiator controls installed and operation
Heating reduced or off in unoccupied rooms
Low energy lighting in all resident areas

External lighting on automatic controls
lighting switched off in all unoccupied rooms
Loft insulated to a minimum of 100mm
Plant room-all pipes and tanks to be insulated
All doors and windows draft free when closed
A minimum of 2 rain butts in place
Recycling the 'core 5' -glass, paper, cardboard, tins/cans & plastics
Composting in place for garden waste.

We completed the relevent criteria in October last year and are now striving for our 'very good' standard. Barchester have since rolled this out to all of our sister homes throughout the UK.
