St Martha’s Care Home is situated in Stechford, about three miles from Birmingham city centre and stands in attractive gardens.

Many of the people who visit St Martha’s for the first time are looking for a care home for a loved one and are often in a state of anxiety, so the staff always try to put them at ease by ensuring that they are made to feel welcome in a homely environment.

Residents are encouraged to stay active, and there are two activity coordinators who organise a weekly activity rota based on the things residents like to do. This includes bingo – they have a passionate team – board games, singing, entertainers every month, and much more. In one activity residents relate stories from their pasts.

There are also special events, such as a Halloween party, with creative activities and dressing up; Remembrance Day, when residents can make their own poppies and a Christmas fete, with cake-baking and fund-raising.

Staff ensure that residents keep in touch with the wider community. Groups of residents are taken out for walks to the local park or a trip out to visit a place that might hold treasured memories Local churches regularly come in to hold services. A chiropodist and hairdresser visit regularly.

St Martha’s is no stranger to the digital age and residents take part in Skype sessions and they can participate in the baking of biscuits and cakes. The home also has a multi-cultural menu including Caribbean, Asian and English food.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 3.4 out of 5 from 2 positive Reviews in the last 12 months.

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating of all Reviews over all time. For each review the Care Home / service is rated Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, Poor or Very Poor on a number of areas eg Staff, Management etc. The Care Home receives points for each rating as follows: Excellent = 5. Good = 4. Satisfactory = 3. Poor = 2. Very Poor = 1. These points are added up and then divided by the total number of completed ratings to generate the average rating.

    The Average Rating of 4.313 for St Marthas Care Centre is calculated as follows: ( (49 Excellents x 5) + (30 Goods x 4) + (15 Satisfactorys x 3) + (2 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 96 Ratings = 4.313

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 12 months. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with 'Extremely Likely' or 'Likely' in answer to the question 'How likely are you to recommend this Care Home to friends and family if they needed similar care or treatment?'

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 5 Positive Reviews, 3 points for the first Positive Review and then 0.25 Points for each of the next 4 Positive Reviews.

    2. 1 point is available for reaching a target number of Positive Reviews based on 20% of the number of registered maximum number of service users. If the target is partially reached then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home with 50 registered maximum number of service users has a target of 10 Positive Reviews, if it has 10 or more Positive Reviews it will receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews will receive 0.7 points.

    3. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. The calculation is the same as above, except the points are divided by 2.

The 3.393 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for St Marthas Care Centre is based on 2 positive Reviews in the last 12 months and is calculated as follows:

    1. 3 + 0.25 = 3.25

    2. Target of 14 positive Reviews (70 registered maximum number of service users ÷ 5). 2 Reviews ÷ 14 Target = 0.143

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

The car my Uncle has received since being in St Marthas was excellent. The way all the staff, doctors have treated him has been unbelievable. They treat people on a personal level, an individual, not as a number. They always talked to him about relative names and family members and kept us informed of any situations e.g. Doctors visiting, not very well. They always phoned you to tell you what was happening, even if it was something minor, you always knew about his care.

The care home is adequate in general care and all staff members are polite and courteous at all times and I consider their approach to be good with residents. However, I feel that the building generally needs upgrading throughout.

I have a lot of faith in the running of the care home. My mother is looked after to the best of their abilities. My mother is very cantankerous and it is difficult at times to get her to eat, wash, do any activities and so on. But I do believe they do their very best to see to all her needs. The staff are friendly and you can talk to anyone when you need to.

Mom has vascular dementia and has been here now for 18 months she is well looked after and cared for by the lovely staff. They are all worth their weight in gold for what they have to do in a day especially the care managers, especially as our mom is quite a handful at times too. St Martha's has no frills but the care given is second to none, and that is the most important asset and without this we as relatives would not be able to go about our daily lives. They have to deal with it 24/7, something we as relatives can not do even if we wanted to.
The staff treat us very caringly too and are always at hand if we have a request to make for mom and always happy to oblige.

Since my mother has been in St Marthas her general health has improved. My mother seems a lot more content in her new surroundings. My main concern is that my mother is safe at all times.
