  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.7 out of 5 from 11 positive Reviews in the last 12 months.

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating of all Reviews over all time. For each review the Care Home / service is rated Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, Poor or Very Poor on a number of areas eg Staff, Management etc. The Care Home receives points for each rating as follows: Excellent = 5. 2. 1 point is available for reaching a target number of Positive Reviews based on 20% of the number of registered maximum number of service users. If the target is partially reached then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home with 50 registered maximum number of service users has a target of 10 Positive Reviews, if it has 10 or more Positive Reviews it will receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews will receive 0.7 points.

    3. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. The calculation is the same as above, except the points are divided by 2.

All staff are caring, friendly and respectful to residents. Whenever I go to visit I am always made to feel welcome. The residents are all treated according to individual needs. Improvements are continually being made wherever possible. I have quite often been there at lunchtime and the food is very good. Freshly prepared, nutritious and enjoyable. There is a good activities team in place which keeps the residents stimulated. Overall the home is kept to a high standard, very clean and tidy.

It is very early days n my case but so far, I have been very impressed with the service provided. We had an emergency which was dealt with quickly and efficiently.
It would be good if they had a published list of room rates for the various categories of aspect and level of care needed.

My father had been to two previous nursing homes prior to a hospital admission. The care in these previous homes was not good at all so I was very anxious about his placement anywhere.
However, staff have taken an interest in my father. they seem educated (which leads me to believe they are valued by management) and compassionate. Dad has settled well and they allow him to be himself. They try and cater for individual needs, making residents feel significant. Any concerns I have had have been immediately addressed.

The staff are very friendly and kind and the rooms are extremely comfortable, however, on three occasions, there was a problem with other residents entering my mother's room causing a little concern, especially at night. This issue has now been resolved and she locks her door if she wants to be alone. I realise it is difficult as other residents may be confused.

My mother is very happy at Barrowhill. She says the staff are wonderful. They always treat her with care and respect. Her room is comfortable and she enjoys the convenience of the en-suite wet room. The food is excellent. My mother particularly enjoys the various activities which are extensive and very well organised.

Having spent several weeks researching care home for my father, who has early stage dementia, we settled on Barrowhill as being the most suitable for his needs and have nothing but praise for the environment, facilities and staff.
From day one, they showed consideration, knowledge and experience and supported us in the transition. The staff have a deep understanding of his individual needs and are constantly working with him to achieve these aims.
We are always made to feel welcome whatever time we visit and it is reassuring for us to know he is so well cared for and we no longer have to worry about him.

My Mother-in-law has settled very quickly into a new regime, after losing her husband of 65 years. She was in shock having been looked after by her husband for 15 years with dementia. The home have cared for her as part of a large family. She is now eating healthy, tasty meals and putting on weight.
She never asks to go back home and always has a smiley happy face.

My Husband came to Barrowhill Hall initially for respite care in October 2016. It was then agreed that he will reside there on a permanent basis. Everyone at Barrowhill has contributed to a very smooth and positive transition to residential care. My Husband was made to feel very safe and secure. He feels very much at home and is very happy there.
The staff have been extremely professional in their approach to his care. He is treated with great care and compassion.

Very friendly staff throughout, from cleaners to carers. Always spoken to as soon as I walk in. The best home we saw when choosing a place for dad. Good atmosphere and staff caring. To achieve excellence there needs to be a little more care, in ensuring male patients are shaved and residents always have hearing aids in etc in.

My mother had been a a resident at Barrowhill Hall for the past three years before she sadly passed away in February. The staff are so caring, patient, understanding and gave my mother 100% care and attention. She was treated with dignity at all times and the support for our family was also fabulous. We wouldn't have wished for her to spend her last years and days anywhere else but Barrowhill Hall. We thank all the staff for the wonderful care she received.

As mum has not been there long from what I have seen I am very impressed. I used to be a dementia nurse in charge of 24 residents in nights with 1 carer and this home is a lot lot better than the one I used to work with. As it was a struggle in mornings to get residents up for day staff, we always did our best (100%+). The staff and management at Barrowhill Hall are wonderful. Always happy to help, very friendly and as I live in Crewe Cheshire I can only get down once a fortnight as I am still at work.

Martin

Martin Rogerson

Job Title: Home Manager

Description:

Martin is a very experienced care and nursing home manager.

"I worked in the NHS for many years where I had a variety of nursing roles in cardiology, diabetes, dermatology and endocrinology.

"It was during my time as a senior nurse coordinating admissions for elderly patients to what was then the North Staffs Hospital that I met staff dedicated to the care of older people.

"It gave me an intense desire to apply my skills and knowledge in the care home sector where I could promote care of the elderly and prevent unnecessary admissions to hospital.

"I started out as the manager of Astbury Mere Care Home in Congleton in 2012 before moving here to Barrowhill Hall at the beginning of 2016.

"I want families to feel confident that their loved one will be extremely well cared for at Barrowhill Hall. We want them to feel we have warm, welcoming, friendly staff who provide care to each person as an individual, understanding who they are, what they like and how they want to live their life."

Outside of work, Martin is married to Erica and they have two boys, Jacob and Tobias.

He enjoys golf and loves cooking and baking.

Job Title: Deputy Manager

Description:

Deputy manager Rhiannon McGirr is better known as Rhee to everyone at Barrowhill Hall.

“We’re like a family here. We all work really well together and the carers give residents the same attention they would give their grandparents.”

Being a nurse is all Rhee ever wanted to do. She began to specialise in elderly care six years ago and has been with us since 2012.

“Older people deserve looking after. I’m also very interested in dementia because it has so many variants.

“It’s great when we get those moments of sparkle from the residents, when you make a connection or you see a memory come to life.”

Rhee came to Staffordshire thanks to her next door neighbours when she was living in Hampshire.

“They were moving and they kind of took me with them – I was ready for a new adventure and I thought, why not!”

Rhee lives in Rocester with her husband Mac, and their two rabbits Ludo and Hoggle.

Carol is the receptionist at Barrowhill Hall and has been working at the home since 2010.

Married to Chris for 41 years, she has three children and five grandchildren.

Her day starts with delivering newspapers to the residents. Many of them like to have their regular daily paper, just as they would have done at home. She takes calls from families, books appointments for people who want to come to have a look around and she is also the first person people see when they arrive.

"I really enjoy meeting people and telling them about the wonderful place we have here," said Carol. "What I love best about Barrowhill Hall is the family feel and the support that everyone is given. I know many of the staff talk about the sense that we’re a ‘family’ here but that’s really how it feels."

"I want families who visit to have peace of mind that their relative is going to be safe and well cared for in a homely environment."

Maggie

Maggie Field

Job Title: Care assistant

Description:

Maggie Field wanted to care for people even as a small child. But when she left school in the 1960s, she didn’t have the qualifications she needed to train as a registered general nurse. So how did she end up nursing at Barrowhill Hall?

“I started out as a secretary,” remembers Maggie, who joined our team in January 2017.

“It took me abroad, as I had to move to Bahrain when I worked for an international bank, but it wasn’t really what I wanted to do. I’d wanted to be a nurse since I was a little girl and I decided to take the plunge and re-train when I was 35 - and had three children!”

Maggie did an access course before starting her nursing studies at Staffordshire University. She would sit with the children around the kitchen table and they would all do their homework together.

After having another baby, she finally started nursing in a care home before she moved to the coronary care unit at the then North Staffordshire Hospital.

“I didn’t realise I already knew the manager, Martin, when I started here,” said Maggie, “but we used to both work in the cardiology department at the hospital. And I’d worked with Rhee, the deputy manager, so I found it easy to settle in.”

Maggie’s daughter, Ruth, also visits Barrowhill Hall as a vintage singer, entertaining the residents once a month with songs from the 1940s, ‘50s and ‘60s.

Maggie is finding her new role challenging but hugely rewarding.

“Just getting that brief moment of connection with someone is fantastic,” she said. “One lady used to be an auxiliary at the hospital and she’s fascinated with my fob watch. She can’t chat about her career but she can respond to my jokes and she laughs and laughs. That’s wonderful.”

Alina

Job Title: Nurse

Alina has made Uttoxeter her home after coming to the UK two years ago.

Originally from Romania, she made the move to pursue a career in care after having started as a volunteer in a hospital back home.

“It’s all down to my mum, Mihaela. She worked hard to pay for my nursing school. She wanted me to become a nurse and work in England and now her dream has come true.

“There are more opportunities here, particularly when it comes to training. I want to learn as much as I can about dementia because I really enjoy working with the residents here.”

Outside of work, Alina enjoys making the most of the beautiful surrounding countryside, with Carsington Water one of her favourite places to visit.

She’s settled in Uttoxeter after meeting her husband, Seth, in Burton-upon-Trent.

Barrowhill Hall is somewhere David Roberts Jnr. knew well before he started working here four years ago.

The 25-year-old activities coordinator used to come up to the home as a boy with his dad, David Roberts Snr., who is one of our senior carers. As a teenager, he would help out after school and would often accompany his dad and the residents on trips.

When a vacancy came up for a kitchen assistant he moved from being a machine operator at Fox’s Biscuits to join his dad.

Since then, his mum has become a care assistant here and his sister, Kerry, a member of the night care team.

David changed roles to be a care assistant and was appointed as the home’s activities coordinator almost two years ago. He’s already been a runner-up in the Great West Midlands Care Awards and Barrowhill Hall’s ‘Employee of the Month’ – twice!

“This is my dream job. I’ve completed my NAPA (National Activity Providers Association) training and I’m building up the range of activities we offer residents here.

“We’ve introduced baking, flower arranging and we’ve even had a Western-themed week.”

Outside of work, David is a charity fundraiser whose annual display of festive lights on his parents’ home raises hundreds of pounds for good causes.

He’s also a self-confessed theme park geek.

“I’m a qualified chef but I moved into caring when my daughter was growing up. She’s now 16 and it’s wonderful to be cooking again.”

Sarah and her husband Paul have lived in Staffordshire since 1997 having moved here from Surrey.

“I would never go back. Even my mum and my sister have moved up here now. It’s a beautiful place to live and the people are warm and friendly.”

Paula is the office manager at the home.

“It's hard to describe a typical day at Barrowhill for me as every single day is different, you have to react to what is going on. But generally, I attend the morning meeting with all the heads of department, produce daily reports to Head Office and it’s my job to do the induction training for new staff.

“My favourite part of Barrowhill has to be the views. They really are spectacular, especially the walk down to Churnet Lodge from the main building. The view simply takes your breath away, it has to be seen to be believed!

“I hope that when families visit their loved ones they leave Barrowhill knowing that their relatives are being well cared for and they are happy and safe.

“I’ve worked here for just over five years now. Before that, I worked in the construction industry for more than 20 years.

"When the company I worked for closed and I was made redundant, I felt it would be nice to work in a different field and the people here make it a much more interesting place to work.

“I can be quite a sensitive soul, so the best piece of advice I've been given is from my dad and that's "Don't take it personally!"

“Outside of work I like walking, baking cakes and like most women I like to go shopping!
