Overview

The Review Score of 8.6 (maximum of 10) for The Granby is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.1 out of 5 from 33 Reviews over all time. This Average Rating is also the rating value for The Granby in Google's Search Results - more info

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.5 out of 5 from 9 positive Reviews in the last 12 months.

Detailed Breakdown

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating of all Reviews over all time. For each review the Care Home / service is rated Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, Poor or Very Poor on a number of areas eg Staff, Management etc. The Care Home receives points for each rating as follows: Excellent = 5. Good = 4. Satisfactory = 3. Poor = 2. Very Poor = 1. These points are added up and then divided by the total number of completed ratings to generate the average rating.

    The Average Rating of 4.069 for The Granby is calculated as follows: ( (130 Excellents x 5) + (174 Goods x 4) + (72 Satisfactorys x 3) + (14 Poors x 2) + (1 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 391 Ratings = 4.069

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 12 months. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with 'Extremely Likely' or 'Likely' in answer to the question 'How likely are you to recommend this Care Home to friends and family if they needed similar care or treatment?'

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 5 Positive Reviews, 3 points for the first Positive Review and then 0.25 Points for each of the next 4 Positive Reviews.

    2. 1 point is available for reaching a target number of Positive Reviews based on 20% of the number of registered maximum number of service users. If the target is partially reached then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home with 50 registered maximum number of service users has a target of 10 Positive Reviews, if it has 10 or more Positive Reviews it will receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews will receive 0.7 points.

    3. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. The calculation is the same as above, except the points are divided by 2.

The 4.549 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for The Granby is based on 9 positive Reviews in the last 12 months and is calculated as follows:

    1. 3 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 = 4

    2. Target of 16.4 positive Reviews (82 registered maximum number of service users ÷ 5). 9 Reviews ÷ 16.4 Target = 0.549

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

8.6 The Granby has a Review Score of 8.6 (8.618) from 33 Reviews

My mother came into the nursing home for respite care. We had looked around a couple of other nursing homes but when we saw The Granby it was very apparent that the ambience and facilities were far superior to other places.
We felt that she received a warm welcome and were pleased with the care that she received.
As a family, we would be very happy for her to return if the need should arise in the future.

Everything about The Granby is first class - food, staff, care shown to me, activities, cleanliness. I have been very happy here and I am sure this has helped to my recovery. I have also met some very nice residents.

I cannot recommend The Granby highly enough, our wonderful mum who was well known to staff was a real character, she sadly passed away on the 19th January but her few months spent in The Granby were very special.

We cannot commend the staff highly enough they are just brilliant, always caring, sharing a laugh with mum and being very patient as mum had mild dementia.

They made her last 2 weeks very comfortable and you could tell they cared for mum and us family as we were also looked after with their support.

We as a family will always be eternally grateful for all they did, the manager and the team are just wonderful.

We miss our mum terribly but we rest knowing that she had the best care not only from us but particularly from the staff that she adored

This place is not like a normal care home but more like a 5-star hotel, it's just beautiful

Highly recommended.

Thanks, everyone xxx

Visited for respite. The section I was resident in is under refurbishment. The work and design is to a very high standard, worthy of the best hotels. Work in progress gave some inconvenience but the tradesmen were polite, considerate and helpful. The new lift will be a great improvement and the ballroom "should be listed" and the sprung floor preserved. My room was comfortable and quiet with shower room, good adjustable bed and TV. Maintenance staff were helpful.

Service was at the end of a button with a quick response. Heating was adequate but needed controls. Reception rooms were of a high standard, with beverages served, and also the use of a snack bar. Food was of acceptable quality but there was a limited menu for residents who are not mobile and had eating problems, therefore not always to my requirements. I did not require medical assistance, however, it was comforting to know it was available. The respite visit helped my recovery, however I am fitter than many of the residents.

We are very grateful that a room was provided at short notice to help out in an emergency. The building is very elegant, well maintained and is being upgraded.
Once the upgrade is complete there will be a larger lift, which will be a great help for users in wheelchairs.
The staff are friendly and seem professional, although not always as proactive as they could be in offering help.
This resident spent more time in her room than she wanted, apparently because staff were not always available to help her to access the public rooms.

My mother was in The Granby for about 3 years. Throughout her stay, the staff always showed a very high level of care. The food was good, the home was clean and bright with attractive pictures on the wall and generally gave the impression of a good hotel rather than a care home. There seemed to be a wide range of activities available although my mother wasn't interested. There were a few faults, mainly the home's inability to return the resident's own clothes to them after laundering, but I can't speak highly enough of the staff. My mother was bedridden for her last 6 months but never developed a bed sore and was always kept comfortable. The staff never gave the impression of anything being too much trouble. I have heard so many stories of homes where residents were neglected in some way, even expensive homes, but I never experienced this at The Granby and could not recommend it more.

I find 95% of the staff very good, friendly, caring and always happy no matter what they have to do. Sometimes the food can be good but others poor.
Spend a lot of time in the dining room at meal times and surprised how much food is sent back from residents.
Why when you go in for supper the cook has gone home when people ask for something else.
Also, old people do not want so much pasta and spaghetti and pizza.
If I had a complaint that would be it.
But as I say, I'm 95% happy.

Karen Auker, Home Manager at The Granby responded to this review on 19 Jun 2017:

Thank you for your comments, we always welcome feedback. We strive to continually improve our care and we are glad that you have had a largely positive experience with us. At The Granby, we love our food. We firmly believe that when you eat well, you live well too. This is a core part of our brighterkind philosophy of care, centering on good nutrition and the importance of mealtimes as a social occasion. Our chef strives to prepare restaurant-style meals combining variety with a balanced diet and an emphasis on locally sourced ingredients. Our residents get involved in helping to plan our menus too. Our dining rooms are always hubs of conversation and laughter during mealtimes. As a Home Manager I always strive to respond promptly to emails and operate an open door policy. If there is anything you would like to discuss further, please contact customercare@brighterkind.com or pop into the home anytime. Many thanks, Karen Auker

I spent 8 days in The Granby for respite care whilst recovering from a hip operation. I received very good care and attention from a friendly staff whilst residing in comfortable surroundings with very good food. I would not hesitate to go there again in similar circumstances. Very satisfactory overall.

There is at present a great deal of complete refurbishment taking place which will not be completed until September. The staffing was recently depleted when a new home was opened at Knaresborough. Quite a few of the staff who lived there moved to be nearer to home. A much more accurate description will be available when the work is completed.

Karen Auker, Home Manager at The Granby responded to this review on 09 May 2017:

Thank you for your comments. We always welcome feedback as we continually strive to improve our care. We are delighted to be undertaking a full refurbishment of The Granby. Our investment will see this home completely refitted and remodelled to create a very special environment for our residents and their families. As well as a complete refurbishment of all our bedrooms and common areas, we will also be installing an enlarged lift, refurbishing the crystal ballroom and creating new areas such as a wellness spa and cup and saucer café. We also recently opened our new cinema room for residents to enjoy their favourite films. If you would like to discuss any issues further, you are welcome to contact me any time.

Despite the good efforts of carers and currently the management, it does not compensate that the building is very unsuited to wheelchair use, particularly with regard to bathroom use.
Also, the upkeep of the so-called 'garden' area is pathetic, I hardly think overgrown roses, dilapidated walls and scrubby soil constitute the term garden.

Karen Auker, Home Manager at The Granby responded to this review on 16 Feb 2017:

Thank you for your comments. We welcome all feedback that will help us continue to improve our care services.
We are currently making extensive improvements to The Granby Care Home in Harrogate with a full refurbishment taking place. These changes will significantly improve the living environment for our residents and their families and is due to be complete in September 2017.
All of the bedrooms will be redecorated and refurbished, with each resident choosing the style and theme of their room. We will have a new lounge, dining room and conservatory and we will introduce a special café bar for residents and family members.
There will be a full programme of redecoration and refurbishment of all the bathrooms and corridors, increasing wheelchair accessibility and making the route around the home more spacious and convenient for all.
Furthermore, the garden will have a full revamp and tidy up, with a fresh flower bed. We are really excited about the refurbishment and would love to invite you into the home to see the completion of Phase 1 so far. If there is anything at all you would like to discuss further, please contact customercare@brighterkind.com or feel free to pop into the home anytime. Many thanks for your time.

Karen Auker, Home Manager

Over the last 8 years, standards have dropped and fees have increased by around 6% a year compound interest. These increases are not justifiable and will if they continue, prohibit recruitment of customers.
Management has been constantly changing and therefore continuity lacking. Investment in the building has been minimal apart from "window dressing."
Recent investment in the home in the form of refurbishment and staffing by the new company and the appointment of a new general manager and unit manager allows for a degree of optimism. However, we will wait and see.

My mother has been going through a bad patch over the last few years of not wanting to eat and drink or even be here. She has found life very hard recently with the death of my father last year, but with support and understanding from all the staff she has turned a corner and we, as a family, are very thankful.
We have not seen mum like her old self for years, she is engaging with other residents and joining in with the activities. Mum is very relaxed with all the staff and can be very cheeky at times.

So far only a short time here, but a very enjoyable time. Including a very interesting and fun time out. So far all my needs have been met. One thing one could not find better, staff for help and friendliness which I needed.
One complaint, the shower room, more water ends up flooding the floor and sometimes the carpet, however careful one is. Thank you to staff.

The Granby is a warm, friendly and welcoming home where nothing seems to be too much trouble for any of the staff. The staff are patient, tolerant and very caring. My aunt is sometimes a very difficult person to deal with and they give a great deal of time to her when specially needed. The food is good, an important feature. The residents all look small and well cared for. They are happy and smiling- for those that can - which is noticeable to visitors.

The Granby is a welcoming and impressive home where the residents are well cared for. The atmosphere is usually cheerful and comfortable. The fabric of the building and rooms is best described as faded elegance but I understand a refurbishment programme is in hand. Otherwise it seems clean and tidy and has a fresh atmosphere.

Since my fathers first ever visit I found not only my father was, and still is, treated with utmost respect, nothing seemed too much trouble. The rooms are spotlessly clean and all facilities that could be required. Bathrooms immaculate and with all help aids available. On to the restaurant....what can I say!! French chefs! Formidable, always a very varied menu and good quality too. Entertainment in The Granby appeared to be of interest and always something to do. For any potential residents of The Granby I would rate it's hospitality, staff, rooms, food, grounds, upkeep, all very highly and I know my father is happy here and being well looked after.

I am now at the age of 97 so when my daughter and my son-in-law go on holiday they like me to come here knowing that I shall be ok and well looked after. Everyone is very happy here and so we are very happy too. This is a lovely home with loving care and can be recommended to anyone. Most windows looked out to trees and lawns and I can watch the birds and rabbits and also cars arriving with visitors which is always interesting. The staff are good and happy to help you with your needs. All goes well.

I came here six years ago and felt very relieved that I no longer had the stress of cooking for myself and providing all the care, washing clothes etc, cleaning rooms. Care was voided by the community, but not very satisfactorily. Other people will do things to help, but not usually with the care one does for oneself.
Just recently I have been asking for porridge - small always. One of the carers settled the matter - small was half a bowl. Back we are again to a full bowl! Our bowls are huge, suitable for active young men. The cooking has been slapdash.
The new curtains provided are attractive, but the fabric leaves a lot to be desired.

Job Title: Home Manager

Description:

Why did you decide to join brighterkind?

I have enjoyed a very varied career in the health and social care sector. In all of the roles I have had the values, ethics and philosophy of the companies I have worked for have been very important to me. I was introduced to brighterkind by a recruitment specialist and if I am honest I was looking for an operational role but I met the Regional Manager and realised brighterkind was very unique – I loved the vibrancy of the uniforms and the bright imagery of the company literature. brighterkind is very special and I am very happy to have joined this part of the journey.

What one thing do you enjoy most about your job?

Achieving positive change and seeing things come together. It’s been a tough year but the team are amazingly resilient and they have been prepared to walk with me and the improvements are having an impact on the people living at The Granby.

What are your interests outside of work?

I have a very busy life but when I am not working I love to cook and I have lots of cook books. I like log fires in winter and BBQs in summer, as well as cats - they are just adorable and I have several strays that I support in the neighbourhood. Stalking my children on facebook and I have been known to sing in the local pub when the mood takes me. Reading is also a hobby but I collect more books than I read. Finally, I love animals and nature programmes as long as there's not too much of them eating each other going on.

Key qualifications and experience

I have 35 years experience in the health and social care sector

I have an MSC in management by research from York University

Experience – what is your background?

I started my career at the weekends helping my parents who owned and managed nursing homes. I went on to work for several local authorities in lots of different roles including an operational manager, strategy manager and business development manager. I also worked as a regional manager where I managed the social work team, home care team, community equipment and OT team as well as the local authority residential care homes.

I moved on to being a service improvements manager working with services who were not achieving good ratings and spent a bit of time managing a neurological rehabilitation unit before joining brighterkind.

I am passionate about…

Doing the right thing and doing it well.

What do you feel is your biggest achievement?

Achieving a Masters whilst working full time and supporting a family.

My favourite brighterkind value from our five values of Keep it simple, Do it from the heart, Make every moment matter, Sort it and Choose to be happy, is...

All of the values are special, but for me... ” Do it from the heart”

Because…

whatever you do will be genuine, with integrity and with the best of intentions.
