  • Crofton Court Residential Care Home, Blyth
Crofton Court Care Home is situated in Blyth, Northumberland. It is in the town centre, next to the community hospital. There is easy access to shops and cafés, the library and community centres. There are also very good public transport links. Blyth port is five minutes walk away.

It has a lovely, welcoming feel to it and is very peaceful, light and airy. Visitors often say that it’s not like a care home: it’s a home.

Person-centred care is at the heart of their working ethos. Staff interact with residents in a polite but friendly manner, they get to know the things they like and don’t like, as well as their little quirks. The staff are always cheery and good humoured, and that rubs off on the residents. It’s fair to say that they really are one big happy family.

They work hard to ensure the residents are given opportunities to be as physically and mentally active as they wish to be. They have excellent links with a local Tai Chi group who come in once a fortnight to give lessons. They also have fortnightly visits from a Just Jhoon group, who do Bollywood-style exercises sessions, which can be done standing or sitting. They are very popular.

They have a big focus on music, with regular visits from entertainers who play the type of music that their residents like, so they can get them singing and dancing. This is particularly good for those with dementia. They have excellent links with Mind Active and organise activities there, and their residents go to their social events in the town. Local primary school choirs often go to them, and residents sometimes visit their schools. A local artist does art classes with residents. The latest project is focusing on Old Blyth – again good for dementia residents. A local church holds regular services here, and a group comes in to read bible stories, usually followed up by a related film.

I have no complaints about the care my dad receives. The staff are all caring and treat him with the respect he deserves. They go above and beyond to make sure he has the care he needs. Activities are well run and the armistice day was great. Well done Crofton Court.

My Mother was placed in Crofton Court for respite care. However, this was extended due to her health. The staff are friendly and caring. Lots to do for residents. Easily contactable and likewise if there are any issues with the family member under their care, they let us know as soon as is practical.

Amazing and friendly staff who look after my grandma. They make her laugh and smile, which she lost prior to coming here. Always friendly with visitors and my children. Thank you for looking after her this past year. I really appreciate your efforts and caring side.

My mother has been a resident since 2019 and has settled very well. This is due, primarily to the care and attention she has received from the very caring staff. Even though they have a time-consuming and demanding job, they are always smiling and have time to answer any questions I might have. Consequently,
this produces a very pleasant and welcoming atmosphere.

There have been a lot of issues with medication mistakes, security issues - Mam was found in the street. A lot of agency staff are being used on nights which does not help with familiarity on dementia cases.
Reply from Francesca MacDuff-Varley, Manager at Crofton Court Residential Care HomeThank you for your recent review, I understand this was fully investigated at the time of the incident with relevant agency involvement and a response was sent to you in 2020. We want to assure you that Akari Care take all concerns and any issues regarding people's safety very seriously and have fully investigated this instance in line with our company procedure.
Many thanks,
Akari Care

Overall, my recent visit after the recent lockdown restrictions lifted went really well. Well organised, not a problem with lateral flow test. The visiting room was spacious and very clean. The staff, as always, very pleasant and helpful. The new management team very helpful and pleasant and kept me
well informed during phone calls etc.

I would have liked to have something to eat earlier in the morning as 10 am for breakfast is too late. Unfortunately, I was isolated so had no connection with the other guests. I found the staff very attentive, willing to do anything they were able. This would have been a very happy place to be had
I had the chance.

I am independent, I wash in the morning, change, make the bed. I only need a carer to change it once a week, help to get a bath once a week. Hair is a mess, hasn't been cut or blow dried since March 2020. I understand hard times with the Covid virus. I isolated 3 times. Took it all in my stride.

Current Review Score: 9.6 (9.607)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.6 (9.607) out of 10 for Crofton Court Residential Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 18 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 18 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.657 for Crofton Court Residential Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (147 Excellents x 5) + (51 Goods x 4) + (7 Satisfactorys x 3) + (2 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 207 Ratings = 4.657
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.95 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Crofton Court Residential Care Home is based on 18 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.95
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 50 registered maximum number of service users is 10, which has been reached with 18 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
