Overview

The Review Score of 8.5 (maximum of 10) for Lauriston House Care Centre is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 3.9 out of 5 from 19 Reviews over all time. This Average Rating is also the rating value for Lauriston House Care Centre in Google's Search Results - more info

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.6 out of 5 from 11 positive Reviews in the last 12 months.

Detailed Breakdown

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating of all Reviews over all time. For each review the Care Home / service is rated Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, Poor or Very Poor on a number of areas eg Staff, Management etc. The Care Home receives points for each rating as follows: Excellent = 5. Good = 4. Satisfactory = 3. Poor = 2. Very Poor = 1. These points are added up and then divided by the total number of completed ratings to generate the average rating.

    The Average Rating of 3.935 for Lauriston House Care Centre is calculated as follows: ( (69 Excellents x 5) + (79 Goods x 4) + (55 Satisfactorys x 3) + (11 Poors x 2) + (2 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 216 Ratings = 3.935

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 12 months. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with 'Extremely Likely' or 'Likely' in answer to the question 'How likely are you to recommend this Care Home to friends and family if they needed similar care or treatment?'

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 5 Positive Reviews, 3 points for the first Positive Review and then 0.25 Points for each of the next 4 Positive Reviews.

    2. 1 point is available for reaching a target number of Positive Reviews based on 20% of the number of registered maximum number of service users. If the target is partially reached then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home with 50 registered maximum number of service users has a target of 10 Positive Reviews, if it has 10 or more Positive Reviews it will receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews will receive 0.7 points.

    3. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. The calculation is the same as above, except the points are divided by 2.

The 4.598 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Lauriston House Care Centre is based on 11 positive Reviews in the last 12 months and is calculated as follows:

    1. 3 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 = 4

    2. Target of 18.4 positive Reviews (92 registered maximum number of service users ÷ 5). 11 Reviews ÷ 18.4 Target = 0.598

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

Staff are very attentive and friendly and have made my nan's stay in the home easier. Came at lunchtime and food portions seemed a little small but ok on the whole.

Thank you for reviewing our services, we are always looking to improve the service offered to our residents and your feedback will be very helpful.

Came to visit during lunchtime, which was served in the room. However, there was no second visit to inquire with the patient if the food was OK or if they would like anything else.
More rounds should be done when residents are having lunch in their room.

Stella Barnes, Home Manager at Lauriston House Care Centre responded to this review on 26 Apr 2018:

Many thanks for your review, it is normal practice for staff to check on our residents when eating their meals as alternatives can still be offered if the meal they are eating is not to their liking. On this occasion staff stated that because the resident had visitors they did not wish to disturb the visit, however they have been asked to ask all residents with or without visitors if they are enjoying their meal. Thank you for bringing this to my attention it is important to us that our residents enjoy their food and if not then an alternative can be offered.

The staff are well trained, kind and hard working but there are not enough staff and are often moved to do other jobs that they are not necessarily trained for.

Thank you for your comments, I apologise that the food is not of a good standard and would like to discuss further with you.

Staff are excellent - so caring and gentle with my mother-in-law.
The only comment I would make is the food is a little bland. Otherwise, all is good.

Thank you for your comments, we will be reviewing meals served at the home to address comments that have been made.

All staff are friendly (receptionist onwards). All staff are bright and cheerful and doing so gives their utmost in the care of residents and visitors. We, the family, find our visits and the care of the resident when visiting, most rewarding and thank the staff and management for all work.

Thank you very much for your very positive comments.

My friend has a comfortable, spacious room with good facilities. All staff are warm, caring and professional though staff shortages are sometimes a problem. A lot of agency staff are used.

Food is not as good since the change to not cooking in-house.

My husband came to Lauriston House Care Centre on respite whilst I had a hip replacement. His mobility deteriorated whilst here and it became impossible for me to handle him. As he was so well looked after and happy I made the difficult decision to leave him here where he could be looked after by the caring staff.

Thank you very much for your positive comments on Lauriston House. I am so pleased that you found the staff team caring with your husband as they are committed and always strive to give and ensure residents are treated with dignity and respect.

Staff: very mixed standard. A lot of temps. Not enough staff. Managers keep changing. Generally OK but staff seem unsettled. Food improved recently. Most staff are kind and considerate. For the cost, I would expect a lot more. However, I see good interactions between staff and my mother and they do respond to her requests. Waiting to see how long the latest manager lasts.

A Boote, Operations Director at Lauriston House Care Centre responded to this review on 21 Mar 2018:

We are sorry that this has been the experience of the service delivered at the home. We value the feedback received from any person involved in, or having contact with the home and truly believe this enables continuous improvement. The Manager will be making contact with the relative to assist with the concerns expressed.

Desptie a period of ups and downs, Lauriston House, under current management is most certainly on the up. The home is welcoming, staff are helpful. The room is clean but more importantly, my mother in law is cared for very well and is happy. There is a good "vibe" within the building.

My parents were admitted when my father could no longer care for mother.
They had separate rooms but the staff ensured they were together during the day.
When father died the staff were kind and caring to mother.
They would have liked better food bu the family were happy that they were safe and warm.

Stella Barnes, Manager at Lauriston House Care Centre responded to this review on 15 Mar 2018:

Thank you for your review, I am sorry that the food did not meet your expectations or that of your relative, it is a difficult thing to get right all the time. Many of our residents have responded favourably to the food which is reviewed weekly by our dining experience audit. If you would like to contact me directly and let me know exactly what it was about the food that did not please, I would be more than happy to look into this and would be more than happy to invite you back for a meal with us.

The rooms at the home are clean and of a good standard. Staff members are generally friendly and helpful. There have been ongoing issues regarding staff numbers but management has been working to address this. Over the time that I have been visiting the home, it has improved and I am now much happier with the quality of care that I see provided. As with many such institutions, the home would benefit from more staff.

While not allowed to mention names, the admin/reception inside the entrance has always stood out as being excellent and I have received constant help and friendliness from that office.

We appreciate your comments and will continue to strive to provide the best possible care for all our residents.

My husband moved into Lauriston House nearly three months ago. Making the decision I could no longer care for him at home was very difficult but the staff have been very supportive to us both.
I visit most days and always find him well cared for.
The nurses keep me informed of how they propose managing any changes and despite my husband's problems with concentration and communication, activities staff always ensure he is included.
The laundry service is very good and the lovely domestic staff ensure the home is kept clean and fresh.

Over the 8/9 years our friend has been at Lauriston House, we have visited on a good number of occasions.
Both my wife and I have been impressed with the way she has been looking - clean and well presented.
Her room is always lovely and clean, and all her pictures, painted by her late husband, all displayed on the wall for her to see.
The staff have been very caring, and nothing is too much bother for them to do for her comfort.
I would have no hesitation in recommending Lauriston House to any other prospective resident.

No management on duty at weekends, only a telephone number. This is not adequate staffing levels.
Laundry leaves a lot to be desired.
White vests now a medium shade of grey.
Should have varied breakfast instead of scrambled eggs each day.
Maintenance has improved now.
Medical equipment in hallways could cause a big problem in an evacuation of building (health and safety).

Geoff Fielding, Home Manager at Lauriston House Care Centre responded to this review on 22 Dec 2016:

At Lauriston House there is a management presence in the home 24 hours per day, 7 days a week. The nurses on duty are responsible for the day to day management of their floors. If at the weekends there is an issue they are unable to deal with or are unsure about they have, as you say, my phone number, that of the deputy manager and the regional manager on call. All are available to offer telephone support and when necessary attend at the home. This, in my experience, is common practice in the sector and is the same situation that exists overnight, 7 days per week. On a more general level regarding staffing levels, Lauriston House has a higher than average staff to resident ratio.
I wasn't aware your sister had experienced a problem with items being returned from the laundry in an unacceptable condition. Please could you speak to me about that when you are in the home and I will look to resolve the issue to your satisfaction.
I am in the home every day during the week at breakfast time so I generally see what is being served. Every day there are full English breakfasts, a range of cereals, toast and spreads, grapefruit and prunes, etc. There is also, as you say, scrabbled eggs, and eggs cooked in other ways on request, but not all of the dishes above are suitable for all of the people who live in the home and this isn't the place to discuss anyone's particular needs but I am always happy to meet with you to discuss your sister's needs.
I'm pleased maintenance has improved though having only been the home's manager for three month's or so I wasn't aware there had been a problem. We have however just recruited a second maintenance tech which should minimise the likelihood of there being any problems in the future.
In terms of medical equipment in the hallways, unfortunately storage space is limited in the home - as in many homes - and we have little choice but to store hoists in less than ideal places. They are however stored in safe areas away from fire exits and, or in recesses on corridors so do not impede movement.
Again, I am happy to discuss in further detail all of the above when you visit the home. I have an open door management style so, unless I am in a meeting, I am always available to meet.

My aunt has only been in this nursing home for 7 weeks, but the staff have helped her to settle in. She seems happy, says she enjoys the food and has made some lovely friends. She has participated in some of the activities. The staff have been particularly kind which the family are pleased about, as she easily becomes anxious.

Geoff Fielding, Home Manager. at Lauriston House Care Centre responded to this review on 22 Dec 2016:

Thank you for your positive comments. The good news in terms of activities is that we have at last managed to recruit to the vacant post and the new staff member will begin in post as soon as all the checks, etc. are completed. The range of activities available will then be much greater and extend across the whole week.
In terms of value for money, I'm happy to meet when convenient for you in order to look at ways to improve the perceived value of the home so please either speak to me when I'm around in the home or contact me on the email address below and we can arrange a suitable time.

My two parents became residents of Lauriston House in February 2015. Overall, I am happy with the level of care and nursing needs provided to my parents on a daily basis. They are treated well by staff, with compassion shown.
Activities are limited and not particularly tailored for individual residents. A number of activities listed do not seem to happen on a weekly basis. The home has struggled to recruit a second activities person for a number of months hasn't helped the situation.

Thank you for your positive comments and I'm sure the situation regarding activities will be improved soon. After a significant amount of time spent in recruiting a second activities staff member we will have someone starting in post in the New Year. We are just waiting for the relevant checks, references, etc. to be completed and she will be ready to help us improve the range of activities available to the people who live in the home.

The poor rating for value for money is reflected in the unlikely to recommend rating. This must be one of the most expensive homes in outer London.

Geoff Fielding, Home Manager at Lauriston House Care Centre responded to this review on 22 Dec 2016:

Thank you for your review of the service and for the positive ratings of most of the areas in the survey. Of those that you have rated "Satisfactory" I'm pleased to tell you we will have a second activities staff member starting in post early in the New Year. That will mean a broader range of activities will be on offer and they will extend throughout the week. It has been difficult to recruit the right person to the post but I'm confident that, with a full complement of activities staff you will notice a significant improvement.
In terms of food, we have had a number of positive comments about the food in the home since I have been in post but I'm looking at ways to improve it and would welcome your input into that if you have the time to meet me. I operate an open door style of management so always happy to meet or alternatively you can of course make an appointment for a specific time.
Value for money is a subject issue but again I'm more than happy to meet and discuss how the perceived value of our service could be improved.
