Reviews

7.2 Lauriston House Care Centre has a Review Score of 7.2 (7.225)

The Review Score of 7.2 (maximum of 10) for Lauriston House Care Centre is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 3.8 out of 5 from 6 Reviews over all time. This Average Rating is also the rating value for Lauriston House Care Centre in Google's Search Results - more info

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 3.4 out of 5 from 2 positive Reviews in the last 12 months.

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating of all Reviews over all time. For each review the Care Home / service is rated Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, Poor or Very Poor on a number of areas eg Staff, Management etc. The Care Home receives points for each rating as follows: Excellent = 5. Good = 4. Satisfactory = 3. Poor = 2. Very Poor = 1. These points are added up and then divided by the total number of completed ratings to generate the average rating.

    The Average Rating of 3.866 for Lauriston House Care Centre is calculated as follows: ( (19 Excellents x 5) + (27 Goods x 4) + (15 Satisfactorys x 3) + (5 Poors x 2) + (1 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 67 Ratings = 3.866

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 12 months. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with 'Extremely Likely' or 'Likely' in answer to the question 'How likely are you to recommend this Care Home to friends and family if they needed similar care or treatment?'

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 5 Positive Reviews, 3 points for the first Positive Review and then 0.25 Points for each of the next 4 Positive Reviews.

    2. 1 point is available for reaching a target number of Positive Reviews based on 20% of the number of registered maximum number of service users. If the target is partially reached then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home with 50 registered maximum number of service users has a target of 10 Positive Reviews, if it has 10 or more Positive Reviews it will receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews will receive 0.7 points.

    3. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. The calculation is the same as above, except the points are divided by 2.

The 3.359 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Lauriston House Care Centre is based on 2 positive Reviews in the last 12 months and is calculated as follows:

    1. 3 + 0.25 = 3.25

    2. Target of 18.4 positive Reviews (92 registered maximum number of service users ÷ 5). 2 Reviews ÷ 18.4 Target = 0.109

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

My husband moved into Lauriston House nearly three months ago. Making the decision I could no longer care for him at home was very difficult but the staff have been very supportive to us both.
I visit most days and always find him well cared for.
The nurses keep me informed of how they propose managing any changes and despite my husband's problems with concentration and communication, activities staff always ensure he is included.
The laundry service is very good and the lovely domestic staff ensure the home is kept clean and fresh.

Over the 8/9 years our friend has been at Lauriston House, we have visited on a good number of occasions.
Both my wife and I have been impressed with the way she has been looking - clean and well presented.
Her room is always lovely and clean, and all her pictures, painted by her late husband, all displayed on the wall for her to see.
The staff have been very caring, and nothing is too much bother for them to do for her comfort.
I would have no hesitation in recommending Lauriston House to any other prospective resident.

No management on duty at weekends, only a telephone number. This is not adequate staffing levels.
Laundry leaves a lot to be desired.
White vests now a medium shade of grey.
Should have varied breakfast instead of scrambled eggs each day.
Maintenance has improved now.
Medical equipment in hallways could cause a big problem in an evacuation of building (health and safety).

Geoff Fielding, Home Manager at Lauriston House Care Centre responded to this review on 22 Dec 2016:

At Lauriston House there is a management presence in the home 24 hours per day, 7 days a week. The nurses on duty are responsible for the day to day management of their floors. If at the weekends there is an issue they are unable to deal with or are unsure about they have, as you say, my phone number, that of the deputy manager and the regional manager on call. All are available to offer telephone support and when necessary attend at the home. This, in my experience, is common practice in the sector and is the same situation that exists overnight, 7 days per week. On a more general level regarding staffing levels, Lauriston House has a higher than average staff to resident ratio.
I wasn't aware your sister had experienced a problem with items being returned from the laundry in an unacceptable condition. Please could you speak to me about that when you are in the home and I will look to resolve the issue to your satisfaction.
I am in the home every day during the week at breakfast time so I generally see what is being served. Every day there are full English breakfasts, a range of cereals, toast and spreads, grapefruit and prunes, etc. There is also, as you say, scrabbled eggs, and eggs cooked in other ways on request, but not all of the dishes above are suitable for all of the people who live in the home and this isn't the place to discuss anyone's particular needs but I am always happy to meet with you to discuss your sister's needs.
I'm pleased maintenance has improved though having only been the home's manager for three month's or so I wasn't aware there had been a problem. We have however just recruited a second maintenance tech which should minimise the likelihood of there being any problems in the future.
In terms of medical equipment in the hallways, unfortunately storage space is limited in the home - as in many homes - and we have little choice but to store hoists in less than ideal places. They are however stored in safe areas away from fire exits and, or in recesses on corridors so do not impede movement.
Again, I am happy to discuss in further detail all of the above when you visit the home. I have an open door management style so, unless I am in a meeting, I am always available to meet.

My aunt has only been in this nursing home for 7 weeks, but the staff have helped her to settle in. She seems happy, says she enjoys the food and has made some lovely friends. She has participated in some of the activities. The staff have been particularly kind which the family are pleased about, as she easily becomes anxious.

Geoff Fielding, Home Manager. at Lauriston House Care Centre responded to this review on 22 Dec 2016:

Thank you for your positive comments. The good news in terms of activities is that we have at last managed to recruit to the vacant post and the new staff member will begin in post as soon as all the checks, etc. are completed. The range of activities available will then be much greater and extend across the whole week.
In terms of value for money, I'm happy to meet when convenient for you in order to look at ways to improve the perceived value of the home so please either speak to me when I'm around in the home or contact me on the email address below and we can arrange a suitable time.

My two parents became residents of Lauriston House in February 2015. Overall, I am happy with the level of care and nursing needs provided to my parents on a daily basis. They are treated well by staff, with compassion shown.
Activities are limited and not particularly tailored for individual residents. A number of activities listed do not seem to happen on a weekly basis. The home has struggled to recruit a second activities person for a number of months hasn't helped the situation.

Geoff Fielding, Home Manager at Lauriston House Care Centre responded to this review on 22 Dec 2016:

Thank you for your positive comments and I'm sure the situation regarding activities will be improved soon. After a significant amount of time spent in recruiting a second activities staff member we will have someone starting in post in the New Year. We are just waiting for the relevant checks, references, etc. to be completed and she will be ready to help us improve the range of activities available to the people who live in the home.

The poor rating for value for money is reflected in the unlikely to recommend rating. This must be one of the most expensive homes in outer London.

Geoff Fielding, Home Manager at Lauriston House Care Centre responded to this review on 22 Dec 2016:

Thank you for your review of the service and for the positive ratings of most of the areas in the survey. Of those that you have rated "Satisfactory" I'm pleased to tell you we will have a second activities staff member starting in post early in the New Year. That will mean a broader range of activities will be on offer and they will extend throughout the week. It has been difficult to recruit the right person to the post but I'm confident that, with a full complement of activities staff you will notice a significant improvement.
In terms of food, we have had a number of positive comments about the food in the home since I have been in post but I'm looking at ways to improve it and would welcome your input into that if you have the time to meet me. I operate an open door style of management so always happy to meet or alternatively you can of course make an appointment for a specific time.
Value for money is a subject issue but again I'm more than happy to meet and discuss how the perceived value of our service could be improved.
