St Raphael’s is a renovated property that suits the daily care needs of older and mentally ill residents, who are looked after thanks to the pastoral care techniques of the Sisters.

This charming property is constructed from fine local sandstone, with many pleasing features retained despite being upgraded to suit the practice of modern care capabilities.

The Sisters continue to adhere to the vision of founder Canon Peter Maes, taking an active part in the day-to-day running of the provision.

Reviews

9.4 St Raphael's has a Review Score of 9.4 (9.409)

The Review Score of 9.4 (maximum of 10) for St Raphael's is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 11 Reviews over all time. This Average Rating is also the rating value for St Raphael's in Google's Search Results - more info

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.6 out of 5 from 7 positive Reviews in the last 12 months.

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating of all Reviews over all time. For each review the Care Home / service is rated Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, Poor or Very Poor on a number of areas eg Staff, Management etc. The Care Home receives points for each rating as follows: Excellent = 5. Good = 4. Satisfactory = 3. Poor = 2. Very Poor = 1. These points are added up and then divided by the total number of completed ratings to generate the average rating.

    The Average Rating of 4.806 for St Raphael's is calculated as follows: ( (107 Excellents x 5) + (19 Goods x 4) + (3 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 129 Ratings = 4.806

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 12 months. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with 'Extremely Likely' or 'Likely' in answer to the question 'How likely are you to recommend this Care Home to friends and family if they needed similar care or treatment?'

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 5 Positive Reviews, 3 points for the first Positive Review and then 0.25 Points for each of the next 4 Positive Reviews.

    2. 1 point is available for reaching a target number of Positive Reviews based on 20% of the number of registered maximum number of service users. If the target is partially reached then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home with 50 registered maximum number of service users has a target of 10 Positive Reviews, if it has 10 or more Positive Reviews it will receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews will receive 0.7 points.

    3. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. The calculation is the same as above, except the points are divided by 2.

The 4.603 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for St Raphael's is based on 7 positive Reviews in the last 12 months and is calculated as follows:

    1. 3 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 = 4

    2. Target of 11.6 positive Reviews (58 registered maximum number of service users ÷ 5). 7 Reviews ÷ 11.6 Target = 0.603

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

In a lovely old building set in spacious grounds with its own chapel, we knew from our first visit that St Raphael's was the right place for our mother, who was in her late 90's and needing increasing care. The real key to the success of St Raphael's lies with the care and humanity of the staff under the exemplary leadership of the sister in charge and her senior staff. Staff at all levels use their individual talents to maintain and improve the residents' interests and abilities and are encouraged to do so. Whilst mother was there, in addition to the activity leaders, this included care staff talented in singing, guitar and piano playing. Even when her faculties had faded, she was encouraged to remember poems learnt in her childhood which she could still recite. As a family, we will forever be indebted to all the staff for allowing her to have a dignified final phase to what had been a full life dedicated to nursing and caring for others.

Thank you Paul and all your family for such a wonderful review . I shared the review with all the staff , this is very much appreciated by all who knew and cared for your mother who was a very special lady .

We recently moved my mother to St Raphael's from another care home in Sevenoaks. The difference is incredible. She was previously left in her bed for most days and was becoming increasingly contracted. She is now up nearly every day, taken outside, moved around in a scoop chair so that she is comfortable. She is now able to hold her head up with greater ease, she follows sounds around the room and will often respond to people talking to her with a smile or a nod. I cannot thank the staff enough, everyone is incredible and the dignity and care shown to my mum is outstanding. Thank you to all the staff who have changed our lives.

Dear Sarah, thank you for sharing your feelings about us. At St Raphael's, we strive to give the best possible care to our resident. We understand the importance of our resident's family having peace of mind when they have left their loved one in our care.

Absolutely amazing home. Friendly, caring staff who completely understand their resident's needs and care and know the residents personally.

Beautiful building that always looks immaculate. My mother-in-law has improved both physically and mentally since moving into St Raphael's.

Dear Haley,

Thank you for your very kind words, your review is much appreciated and gives great encouragement to all our team here at St Raphaels.

St Raphael's is the crème de la crème.

Where to begin? Care and staffing levels incomparable and I have experience with the care sector. One impressive marker is the number of long-serving employees.

Finally, I have rarely - well never - experienced such kindness and loving attention. To both residents and their families. Splendid people.

Thank you very much for your kind words. It means a lot to us to be appreciated. We are very pleased that St Raphael's has been able to make your experience regarding the care sector a positive one.

Our mum was diagnosed with dementia around 5 years ago. A gradual decline in her condition meant that we had to find a residential home for her once she could no longer continue to live at home.

After visiting many care homes in Kent and Sussex we felt that we had found a perfect match for her physical and emotional needs when we visited St Raphael's care home.

Our initial feelings on viewing St Raphael's have proved well founded. The home is run with care and great sympathy. A calm and respectful approach filters down through each member of staff and is evident in every aspect of the exemplary care that they provide.

Her condition continues to decline but she is treated with dignity and respect by the staff at St Raphael’s who endeavour to ensure that she continues to enjoy as great a quality of life as is possible. Visits are a pleasant experience and we always made to feel welcome. Any concerns are dealt with promptly and attentively.

Thank you John for your kind words. They were very welcomed and much appreciated. It is our privilege to care for all those in our care with respect and dignity as per our Augustinian Core values.

My mother, who had vascular dementia, was resident at St Raphael's for six years until she died at the end of March.
The loving care she received was beyond exceptional; it is a very special place.
My mother was treated with kindness, patience and dignity and the staff are all to be commended.

I was most impressed by the kindness and the loving attitude of nuns and staff towards residents and visitors. The location is superb and the rooms are cosy; photos and other personal objects make them even more enjoyable. The food is good, freshly made and lavish.
Everybody tries their utmost to make one feel at home and welcome straight from the beginning by being professional, patient, helpful and by never denying anybody an encouraging smile.

The care at St Raphael's was extremely good. My sister was a resident for 4 years having left her home and life in Australia after her dementia became worse. All the staff were very kind and respectful. She made friends and enjoyed the social activities. When she died, she had the sister-in-charge by her side which must have been such a comfort for her as she was a devout catholic. The care over the years extended to her family and friends, with kindness, tea and cake. We were able to have her funeral in the chapel, so that the staff and her new friends could attend. I would fully recommend St Raphael's.

Elderly mother has dementia.
Home is located in an old country house and run by nuns assisted by day staff.
Home and all staff treat all residents with enormous kindness and good humour. Despite residents being very unwell, there is a permanent atmosphere of fun and laughter. An absolute beacon in the care of the elderly. Truly a national example.

Ever since my mother became a resident, nothing is too much trouble. The staff are always willing to help in any way, always laughing and chatting to relatives, know all the residents by name. Staff are constantly available and they know my mothers likes/dislikes. Their care is fabulous, food/nutrition is wonderful. Safety excellent but residents are able to go outside with staff or visitors. An amazing care home and I am so grateful that there was a vacancy when my mother needed it.

My Mother moved to St Raphael's in February 2015 with her Ahlzeimers & vascular dementia requiring 24 hour care. We chose this home for her because of the homely (& caring atmosphere, the wonderful staff & the expertise in the Mother's condition.

A year on and we are so glad that we chose this home. The care is fantastic - all the staff go that extra mile to look after & engage with all the residents. It is kept wonderfully clean, relatives are always welcome to visit and the homely atmosphere is fantastic.

The activities are thoroughly enjoyed by everyone - staff, residents & relatives - especially the musical ones & the Summer Garden Party & the Christmas lunch which was followed by entertainment.

I would have no hesitation in recommending this home. A**
