The team at the home provides residential, nursing and residential dementia care to older people, with a strong focus on personalised and person-centred support. In the time Mum has been at Hodge Hill Grange, she has been treated with kindness and affection which her deteriorating dementia has made difficult at times.
Although it has been a difficult time, I am impressed with the lack of Covid infection in the home.

What can I say about Hodge Hill Grange - if it wasn’t for the fantastic staff that has looked after our mother in these terrible times we find ourselves in I don’t know what we as a family would have done. The staff are so good with our mother, they make sure she is safe and all her needs are met. We
as a family are able to contact the home any time of the day to enquire about our mother, I myself phone every evening and it is never too much for the staff to give me an update on what mums been up to that day. In these times, we are able to have a FaceTime with mum which is fantastic just being able to see her reassures us that our mother is been looked after. Thank you to the staff.

My mother is a resident of Hodge Hill Grange. Overall she is looked after extremely well and her needs are catered for. Since March, I have had three garden visits and a birthday visit through the windows. This is the area that needs to improve. There should be no reason why, with careful planning,
I cannot visit my mother.

Although we understand your frustrations with visiting, all Birmingham homes are in lockdown currently, due to high levels of infection in the area, therefore this is not a decision made by the home. Staff are working hard to prepare their visiting room for indoor visits and we will be in contact as soon as possible to advise you when these can take place.

Can't fault care.
Just a couple of issues when I visit, I always have to clean spectacle with soap water, have to clean nails.
As I stated, overall care is good.

The staff are very helpful and approachable. I am very happy with the care that my mother is receiving. Her room is always clean and tidy, as is the rest of the home. When I am able to visit, Mum seems very happy.

My experience of Hodge Hill Grange Care Home was a very pleasant one, although it was a short stay for my nan. I could not fault any part of it.
We felt very comfortable and always welcome when visiting, staff had time for both my nan and us as a family, which I feel is very important. I would like

Sadly my uncle passed away in Hodge Hill Grange recently. The home had an incorrect contact number for myself, however, they had my address (this has been the same for 27 years). They did not notify me by letter and offer any chance to collect his personal effects or discuss his final moments.
I was
notified by social services regarding my uncles passing in September, he passed in July. Social services wrote to advise me of this.
When I took this up with the manager, she was unwilling to discuss the matter by telephone, saying any complaint had to be in writing and it was a breach of data protection to give me any information. She would not give me the date of death (required to register the death) causing more delays for my uncle to be laid to rest.
She gave the details to the funeral directors that were appointed by my uncle, not sure how this didn't breach the law?
I was advised that there would be a formal investigation and to date, I have had no details of the findings to date.

Mom in Law has only been resident for a couple of months and although she wasn't happy about it in the first week or two I have noticed a big change in her now she has got used to being in care. She has made some friends and seems happy and contented - long may it continue.

Kitchen area needs constantly keeping clean. When I made mother-in-law a drink recently the fridge had dirty water at the bottom and needed good clean. Signage for meetings should be more prominent and relatives notified by text/email. Mother-in-law had been waiting to go to toilet one day, I went and
her skirt was soaking wet.

Thank you for raising your concerns with us. I am sorry that you found the kitchen area to be below the standard expected. Regular walks around the home are undertaken by management and as part of this spot checks of the kitchen areas and fridges are completed. I have spoken with housekeeping colleagues and raised your concerns with them and they are now paying extra attention to the kitchen areas as a result. Relatives meetings are displayed and these are planned wherever possible in advance, in order to ensure relatives have the opportunity to attend. I cannot comment in relation to the issue you raised relating to your relative via this forum but would be happy to meet with you to gain more information, in order to investigate this. Please be advised that I operate an open door policy and am happy to deal with any such situations as they arise.

The whole team, manager and carers have supported my mom and ensured her needs have been met.
The team have made her feel secure and cared for.
She has been encouraged to participate in activities which have helped her well being.

My brother and I have been visiting Hodge Hill for approximately 12 years. Over the years we have played dominoes and cards etc with the residents.

As a dedicated healthcare professional, Karen Mayo has gained a wealth of experience in providing care and nursing support to elderly people, to enrich their lives. She is a knowledgeable and dedicated leader who is passionate about delivering the highest standards of care and quality of life for Residents.


Having worked at Hodge Hill since mid-August 2021, Karen closely shares HC-One’s vision is aiming to provide the kindest care for each and every Resident. She extends this caring approach to her Colleagues and works closely with them to deliver care and support to Residents in a way that they gain the most benefit, in a warm and welcoming home.


When asked what she enjoys most about her role, Karen remarked:


“Knowing that I’m helping to make a difference in our resident’s day. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing a smile on someone’s face and knowing you helped to put it there”.


Karen has also achieved much outside of work, with her proudest achievement being getting her driving licence. Karen had always relied on family to get her where she needed to be but in 2019 decided it was time to bite the bullet and start some driving lessons. She passed the first time within 4 ½ months.


Outside of work, Karen enjoys spending time with her family, she is a proud mother and grandmother. Whenever she can, Karen will have days out with her family and also enjoys reading in her spare time.
