  • a) The Average Rating is 4.1 out of 5 from 14 Reviews over all time. This Average Rating is also the rating value for Alwoodleigh Residential and Nursing Home in Google's Search Results - more info

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5 out of 5 from 9 positive Reviews in the last 12 months.

Detailed Breakdown

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating of all Reviews over all time. For each review the Care Home / service is rated Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, Poor or Very Poor on a number of areas eg Staff, Management etc. The Care Home receives points for each rating as follows: Excellent = 5. Good = 4. Satisfactory = 3. Poor = 2. Very Poor = 1. These points are added up and then divided by the total number of completed ratings to generate the average rating.

    The Average Rating of 4.067 for Alwoodleigh Residential and Nursing Home is calculated as follows: ( (53 Excellents x 5) + (73 Goods x 4) + (36 Satisfactorys x 3) + (3 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 165 Ratings = 4.067

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 12 months. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with 'Extremely Likely' or 'Likely' in answer to the question 'How likely are you to recommend this Care Home to friends and family if they needed similar care or treatment?'

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 5 Positive Reviews, 3 points for the first Positive Review and then 0.25 Points for each of the next 4 Positive Reviews.

    2. 1 point is available for reaching a target number of Positive Reviews based on 20% of the number of registered maximum number of service users. If the target is partially reached then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home with 50 registered maximum number of service users has a target of 10 Positive Reviews, if it has 10 or more Positive Reviews it will receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews will receive 0.7 points.

    3. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. The calculation is the same as above, except the points are divided by 2.

The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Alwoodleigh Residential and Nursing Home is based on 9 positive Reviews in the last 12 months and is calculated as follows:

    1. 3 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 = 4

    2. Target of 8 positive Reviews (40 registered maximum number of service users ÷ 5). 9 Reviews ÷ 8 Target Reached = 1

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

9.1 Alwoodleigh Residential and Nursing Home has a Review Score of 9.1 (9.067) from 14 Reviews

My brother has been in this care home about 10 weeks and his care and treatment have been excellent. Whenever we have visited and had any concerns, somebody was always available to discuss any matters with us and assures us. My brother's room is always warm and he is very comfortable. We have no concerns whatsoever.

I have found the management and staff very friendly and reassuring. My mum thinks she is living in a hotel and appears to be settled and happy. She likes having her hair done every week. I can now spend quality time with my mum and not worry about leaving her on her own.

At a very sensitive and traumatic time, the staff and managers have provided a very welcoming approach. This in time I hope will help my mother to settle.
All problems and needs have been addressed in a sympathetic and professional manner.
This care has helped us move forward, slow as it may be at a very difficult stage of my mother's life.

The new manager supported by nurses plus the senior carer have made such a difference. They really care about residents and make their well being central to all they do. I am so impressed by how they have turned the home around and they deserve every praise given to them The new area manager listens and is helping to make changes also. All in all, I am so happy with the improvement lately. My husband has been a resident for the last 18 months so I have had every opportunity to compare management styles and the home is the best it's been since my husband moved in. The cook is always concerned about her residents and will go above and beyond making special dishes if required so everyone has something they will enjoy. My husband is unable to access activities which is why no score is present.

My 84year old friend suffered from Parkinson's disease, causing much pain when touched. She suffered a brain bleed and after time spent in the stroke unit she came to Alwoodleigh in January 2017.
She was PEG fed and had lost much of her speech. The staff provided her with a special chair that kept her safe and kept her at 45degrees, to help prevent choking (saliva in the lungs).
She was turned regularly to help her pressure sores. Heels were always off the bed, indeed, her comfort was their prime concern and we were made aware of her palliative care plan, which helped us then the of life care came.
She loved our Kingdom songs and the staff would switch the CD player on so that kept her spirit focused in the upbuilding words of the bible.
They really cared for her, the staff became her friends and she trusted them.
We thank you.

When I could no longer care for my husband who had many health problems. The rapid response would not take him on. He could not go anywhere for re-enablement. He had been in the Huddersfield Royal Infirmary with sepsis and was discharged when medically unstable. He had sores on his groin and genital areas and was sent home with no care package. Our GP was unable to get him any respite as it was Friday! When I rang back, he had gone home! In desperation, I rang Alwoodleigh Residential and Nursing Home and spoke to the manager. She assessed him that night and took him in the next day! From the room at the inn to provided care! Everyone was absolutely lovely. Thank you to the manager for being so caring, nothing was too much trouble and thank you to the manager's daughter for reading so nicely to my husband, he really appreciated this. Would like to recommend to everybody whose loved one needs excellent care.

I've lived here since 2014. The food has improved but would like more variety and fresh fruit and vegetables. It can be noisy at times. Generally, staff are good but I don't like lots of different people looking after me.
Like the activities but don't always remember to go.
Recently moved into a room with a shower which I like.

The recent management has made lots of improvements in the last 6 months or so to the internal appearance of the building, the conduct and professionalism of the staff, the quality of the catering, the activities and the general ambience of the home, it has a much more homely feel even having a family car. We visit daily at various times and there is always a friendly greeting and update on how dad has been and it's nice to visibly see the management on a regular basis with a very welcoming open door policy and also getting involved in a general day to day activities. Nobody wants their relative living in a nursing home but it is reassuring and comforting for us to know that dad is being well cared for and looked after.

Outside of the building plus garden does not give a good impression. However, it is a fine building and there is the scope for the gardens to be really attractive but it would require a lot of money and time spending on them. The interior has been improved slightly recently but again there is room for more improvement before it could be described as good to excellent. Inadequately staffed in the evening resulting in medicine being administered later and later, sometimes after midnight. Indoor activities have improved slightly lately but excursions out have ceased.

Beverley Hanson, Regional Manager at Alwoodleigh Residential and Nursing Home responded to this review on 07 Oct 2016:

Thank you for your review. We welcome all comments as they help us to identify areas in which we can improve our service. I am very pleased to be able to report that, since your review was submitted, a landscape gardener has been employed by the service resulting in the gardens undergoing a complete overhaul. Plans are underway to create a garden which creates an area for residents to enjoy a sensory area, planting and growing or simply relaxation. Many of our residents have been able to enjoy the late summer sun sitting and watching the squirrels perform!

The home is under new management and that has brought many positive changes, including some new additions to the staffing team, which also helps with staffing levels which are based on the needs and dependency of the residents. Medication is administered by qualified staff who undergo training and competencies, ensuring that people who live at the service are safe from risk of harm through safe management and administration of medication.

A new activities coordinator has also joined the service which has resulted in the residents enjoying a whole range of new activities. Residents are consulted with regard to their choice of activities which are then factored into an activities calendar. Out of home outings are included in this with a trip through Blackpool illuminations currently being planned with residents from a sister home.

Of course, we understand that friends and family of Alwoodleigh see but a very small window of daily life within the home, which is why we invite people to spend a day with us, enjoy a meal with the residents and partake in activities, so they can experience more of a balanced view. We look forward to extending this invitation to you.
