Having survived a superbug and months in hospital in London and was in need of full-time care, I moved my mother to Leeds in August 2015 so I could visit her regularly and after an extensive review of local care homes, I finally decided on Southlands. My mother's dementia had worsened and she couldn't walk so my concerns were two-fold in that the care home could provide suitable care for dementia as well provide a high standard of personal care which although with her limited mobility still respected her dignity. From my first visit to Southlands and my discussions with the manageress, I felt that I'd found the right home for my mum. Limited number of patients, plenty of staff that really cared, five-star accommodation a great quality food. Mum stayed at Southlands for almost a year and loved it there.Singing every day with the staff, enjoying the food, activities, the entertainment, and having her hair done once a week at the in-house hairdresser. My life became much easier not having to travel to London was great and knowing where she was and how much she loved it and how the staff loved her was amazing. She couldn't have been in better hands. Mum died in July 2016 after a stroke which shocked and saddened everyone. I won't forget how the matron kissed mum on the forehead before the ambulance took her to hospital and how the staff wanted her back at Southlands for the last few days of her life to care for her in the way that she deserved. Mum was almost 94 when she died and she'd had a great life but the last few years in London with home help weren't the best and so I am very grateful for the wonderful year she had at Southlands. A good innings and a lovely end to a long and happy life.

Service provided is good. My mother complains about the food (not enough choice). Also the night staff are not as good as the day staff. (very abrupt and take a long time to answer the call button) They do not appear to be as helpful as the day staff. Lift in need of refurbishment.

My wife and I have lived here for 15 months in his new apartment linked to the Southlands care home at Roundhay. We have been most satisfied in this new property and all aspects of the service provided has been excellent. The attitude of the staff is exemplary in all facets and would thoroughly recommend the home.

My mother is well cared for and most of her needs are met. Staff kind and caring, food good. Lack of stimulating activities but mother probably wouldn't join in anyway. Difficulty in getting a dentist to sort out her missing front tooth.

My parents moved into the new independent living apartments a year ago. We have been pleased with Southlands from the outset and have been particularly impressed over the last couple of months with the care and attention provided following my fathers need for major surgery at an advanced age. Southlands have provided excellent and appropriate care since he returned from hospital and equally they provided this for my mother while he was away and during his convalescence . The care plans were negotiated sensitively with the manager with my parents full participation and our experience has validated the model of providing flexible care as needed.

Dad is currently receiving EOL care at Southlands. All staff are caring, friendly and compassionate. For the most part training seems to have been thorough enabling staff to undertake the majority of their duties with care, professionalism and dignity. When dad was more active I felt that the enrichment programme was lacking and residents were lacking in stimulation/entertainment. Despite this I would recommend Southlands to others as the staff and care is generally of a very good standard.

My Dad has been a resident at Southlands since 2010 after having a severe stroke leaving him paralysed down one side and in a wheelchair. Over the past 5 years Southlands has provided a very supportive and caring environment that we cannot fault. The staff are mostly long term employees who know the residents and really care for their welfare. They are clearly recruited for having boundless patience and a their caring nature. The management are very supportive of the staff having time to talk to residents and activities are organised on most days. The recent refurbishment has raised the standards of the rooms and catering. The food is very good and tailored to individual needs and preferences with the main chefs having worked at the home for many years. The first thing we noticed on entering Southlands is that is doesn't smell like other 'old people' homes. The residents and house is kept very clean by hardworking housekeeping staff. We also didn't have an appointment - they were happy for us to call in at any time to see the home as it really is rather than a staged viewing. We often have family meals with my Dad at the home and the staff fully support this attitude of treating Southlands as my Dad's home which in fact is what it has become. Overall I cannot fault Southlands. Nobody would want to leave their own home unless they had to but, as and when this event is forced, I would strongly recommend visiting Southlands meet the management and staff to see what they have to offer.
