Reviews

9.6 St Mark's Care Home has a Review Score of 9.6 (9.570)

The Review Score of 9.6 (maximum of 10) for St Mark's Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.6 out of 5 from 27 Reviews over all time. This Average Rating is also the rating value for St Mark's Care Home in Google's Search Results - more info

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5 out of 5 from 17 positive Reviews in the last 12 months.

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating of all Reviews over all time. For each review the Care Home / service is rated Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, Poor or Very Poor on a number of areas eg Staff, Management etc. The Care Home receives points for each rating as follows: Excellent = 5. Good = 4. Satisfactory = 3. Poor = 2. Very Poor = 1. These points are added up and then divided by the total number of completed ratings to generate the average rating.

    The Average Rating of 4.57 for St Mark's Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (204 Excellents x 5) + (99 Goods x 4) + (20 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 323 Ratings = 4.57

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 12 months. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with 'Extremely Likely' or 'Likely' in answer to the question 'How likely are you to recommend this Care Home to friends and family if they needed similar care or treatment?'

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 5 Positive Reviews, 3 points for the first Positive Review and then 0.25 Points for each of the next 4 Positive Reviews.

    2. 1 point is available for reaching a target number of Positive Reviews based on 20% of the number of registered maximum number of service users. If the target is partially reached then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home with 50 registered maximum number of service users has a target of 10 Positive Reviews, if it has 10 or more Positive Reviews it will receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews will receive 0.7 points.

    3. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. The calculation is the same as above, except the points are divided by 2.

The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for St Mark's Care Home is based on 17 positive Reviews in the last 12 months and is calculated as follows:

    1. 3 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 = 4

    2. Target of 7.8 positive Reviews (39 registered maximum number of service users ÷ 5). 17 Reviews ÷ 7.8 Target Reached = 1

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

My sister has been resident at St Mark's since May 2017.
The care she has received from all the staff has been second to none.
Well done to the staff for coping so well with the many residents they have charge of.
I would recommend this care home to anyone looking for a placement for a relative needing care in later life.

The care that my nana receives here is next to none. She is so much happier here thanks to the fantastic staff.

The atmosphere here is lively and I feel my nana is happier because of this. The staff are extremely helpful with any of my questions and are always willing to give that little bit more help.

Keep up the good work.

My mam received excellent care from all staff. When mam collapsed, the csm got medical help immediately and saved her ass she had sepsis and mam can't communicate. The staff just knew how ill she was because they care for her so well. She is always clean, well dressed, well fed, given attention and every need is responded to so well. She is spoilt and loved. What more could you ask for?

Thank you for your review. It is lovely to hear how well looked after your mum is and that she is loved by all the staff. This makes such a difference to the feel of the home and makes it more like a second family.

Unfortunately, my Grandad was only a resident at St Mark's for 10 months but, during this time, himself and the family were extremely happy with the dignity, care and kindness shown by all staff at St Mark's. As we were regular visitors we will miss our time at St Mark's as we felt very welcome.

Thank you so much for sharing your feedback with us, we really appreciate it. I am so pleased you are happy with the care your Grandad received at St Mark's Care Home and the home was welcoming to you. Thank you, again, for your kind review.

Staff are well trained to treat the resident with dignity and respect.

All aspects of cleanliness are excellent, from the floors and chairs to the resident's bedrooms and the residents themselves!

Good catering team cooking for all aspects of nutrition, good cakes too!

Good housekeeping team with buttons sewn back on if needed. Clothes are nicely washed, ironed, labelled.

The activity program includes visiting singers, puppeteers and even a dog!
Local churches visits. Relatives welcomed.

New - a summerhouse where relatives can take their loved one for a cuppa and quiet in the sunshine.
St Mark's is a 5-minute walk to Ropner Park with a tea room and lake which in the summer, bands play on a Sunday afternoon in the bandstand.

Staff turnover and sickness is low, they are all lovely and welcoming and seem to enjoy their work
Thank you St Mark's.

NB I scored value as satisfactory as I have issue with Bupa who charge private residents differently. No reflection on the quality of care.

My mother was lucky enough to be offered a home at St Mark's. The staff and manager did everything they could to make my mother feel at home. Unfortunately, due to her challenging behaviour and risk to other residents, she had to return to the hospital after 4 days. This was despite a lot of effort from staff and management to try and settle her.
The staff are very friendly and professional, despite her behaviour treat her with dignity and respect at all times. There was always activities going on and staff brought their families in to visit the residents. A very friendly family atmosphere at all times.
We now have the job of finding somewhere else that can accommodate my mother's behaviour but will struggle to find anywhere as welcoming as St Mark's.

The staff at St Mark's demonstrated amazing care and understanding when looking after Dad during his stay and at the end of his life.
They were patient and accepting of his sometimes challenging and unpredictable behaviour which helped our family cope at a very difficult time. The small and friendly environment suited Dad's needs, all the staff including the nurses, carers, cooks and handyman engage with the residents helping it to feel more like a home than an institution.
The facilities are fairly basic and limited however in Dad's time there we saw changes and improvements being made to offer a broader range of activities and experiences for residents and families. The management and communication systems are effective most of the time so that concerns and issues are discussed and resolved quickly.
I cannot thank the team enough for the kindness and support given to us during the final days of Dad's life.

When my father was admitted to hospital in April due to his worsening Lewy Body dementia we realised as a family that we needed to look for residential care for him. We looked at several EMI nursing care homes but as soon as we walked into St Mark's we knew that we had found the best place for him to be.
All the staff warmly welcomed my father and supported us at such a difficult time in our lives. My dad was always such a sociable man and the staff made time to have a laugh and a joke with him even though they were so busy caring for all the residents. Owing to the form of dementia he had, dad's behaviour could be challenging at times but the expert staff dealt with him so patiently.
Sadly my father passed away on 22nd November, after a short stay in hospital. Thankfully we managed to get him back to St Mark's the day before he died, where he was treated with dignity and respect. The support and compassion we were given from all the staff during these last few days was outstanding.

My father moved into St Mark's in June 2016. We had to make a quick decision to move him from a two-week short term care to permanent care, following his discharge from hospital after a bad fall in his own home. The management of St Marks were very welcoming and very helpful. My father was adamant he would not live in a residential care home and he was very agitated and confused in the first few weeks. Staff have done very well in settling him in and he is now peaceful and although confused he has become very accepting of where he is.
The location of St Mark's is excellent for us very near to the family who visits him almost every day. There is a beautiful park to take him to only 200 metres from the home. We all appreciate the staffing level and also that most staff speak English as a first language. Dad has been looked after very well medically in terms of his cleanliness. He is much safer and is physically significantly healthier than when he arrived into St Mark's.

Since my father-in-law has been a resident in St Mark's Care Home. He has been settled and well looked after; clean and well respected. Us as a family were very upset that my father-in-law had to go into a care home but needed the professional care that we struggle to give him, but the staff have been marvelous with him and us as a family.

We bring my father-in-law home on a Sunday and when it's time to go back he is more than happy to return with no problems. Nothing is a problem for the staff when they are approached about anything and the managers are the same.

My husband has Alzheimer's and is now in his 13th year of the disease. I cared for him at home for 11 years is just now in his second year at a nursing home. My husband is diabetic, at home he was used to me doing meals and puddings suitable for him as there is so much available now to make tempting puddings etc but it seems he has just to accept seeing others enjoy the trifles and pudding. I am sure with what is available now a chef or cook could do better than a banana or yogurt. It took a year for him not to ask me "to take him home" he seems settled but the area he is in most residents sleep all day and are fed by the nurses, whereas he is more awake and will sit at the table to eat his meals. I believe downstairs would be better suited to my husband's environment.

Mum became a resident here end of last year from another care home. Her improvement was noticeable from day one from tears and anger to giggles and kindness. Overall her stay so far has been good. St Mark's have some great staff, some perhaps better than others. I do worry that a lot of the time they appear to be understaffed, especially on an evening. Kitchen staff are always very accommodating. I feel the garden needs attention and perhaps more encouragement for outdoor activities could be introduced.

Thank you for your review. We are pleased to hear about your positive experience and appreciate your comments of our home and will share your comments with the home’s manager. The Bupa Customer Care Team.

After a recent chest infection mam needed 24 hour care> After visiting a few care homes we chose St Marks. The manager couldn't do enough for us. Mam went in for respite care of four weeks. The staff were friendly and supportive and cared for mam well.

This was Mam's first ever stay in a residential home, for respite, so as a family we were quite anxious about leaving Mam. Our experience could not have been better. All the staff were extremely supportive, kind and reassuring to us, making us all feel welcome and Mam was 'home'. On collecting Mam, I found her to be very happy, settled and took quite some time to get her out! We received a phone call to say Mam had left some things behind. When we went to collect them, everyone was so welcoming, so much so that Mam even ate the Manager's cake!. thank you all for such a positive experience.

My mum has only recently come to St Mark's due to a deterioration in her health and we are overwhelmed with the care and support shown right from the beginning by all staff. Nothing is too much trouble. We are always greeted warmly and kept fully informed about things. The staff/management work extremely hard and are always very understanding and helpful.

The home is now under new management and in the short few weeks the changes are fantastic it really feels like a home. The environment is being altered to a dementia friendly simulating environment and it has a great feel to it. The staff team are supportive and nothing is to much for them I am always greeted with a smile and a nice cup of tea. I love visiting this home.
