My Mother has lived in Townsend Manor since May 2024. She was admitted after several weeks in hospital after an infection and following falls. She had a few previous admissions to hospital and it became clear that, aged 99, she needed 24-hour care. She received a very warm welcome from all the staff
- had a lovely ensuite bedroom with a door to the garden. Her care has been excellent, the activities provided have generally improved her quality of life and she and I know she is in the best possible place.
Reply from Sarah Ward, Home Manager at Townsend ManorThank you for your kind review. We're so pleased to hear that your mother has settled in well at Townsend Manor and that she's received a warm welcome from our team. We are committed to ensuring that she continues to receive the highest standard of care, and we greatly appreciate your trust in us to look after her. My dad has been a resident at Townsend Manor since November 2022. He is constantly praising the excellent care he receives and how much he loves all the staff. Whenever I visit the staff are always friendly and will answer any questions I have on my dad's care. Sadly he does not like to go out of his
lounge so does not benefit from the excellent facilities, however, the activities staff do engage with him and encourage him to get involved. I am often there at mealtimes and have eaten at the home with our family and the food is excellent. The chefs go out of their way to ask if there is any particular food he would like which is great. The manageress is is often in early in the mornings and she is very approachable and supportive and listens to any comments or questions. I feel that the home is a friendly and welcoming place and I feel like the staff goes above and beyond to make Dad feel safe and happy.
Reply from Sarah Ward, Home Manager at Townsend ManorThank you for your kind words and for sharing your experience of Townsend Manor. Were delighted to hear that your dad feels safe, happy, and well cared for by our dedicated team. Creating a warm and welcoming environment is at the heart of what we do, so its wonderful to know our staffs commitment is recognised. It's also great to hear that you and your family have enjoyed meals here and that our chefs accommodate his preferences. While we respect his choice to stay in his lounge, our activities team will continue to engage him in ways that bring him joy. Your feedback means a great deal to us, and we truly appreciate your trust. Thank you again for your support. If there's ever anything more we can do, please don't hesitate to get in touch.

The care home resembles a 4/5 star hotel but sadly although the staff remain kind, caring and vigilant, it's clear that staff numbers have dropped since Mum arrived and sometimes they are at full stretch to cater for the needs of the residents. I do feel sometimes it seems a bit sparse on staff around
the home and at times Mum is still in bed at 11 am waiting for her personal care. The care home is always clean, tidy and warm and welcoming and the family are grateful that there are no restrictions on visiting and agree that with Mums' limitations she is now in the best place.
Reply from Sarah Ward, Home Manager at Townsend ManorThank you for your review. We're delighted to hear that you find Townsend Manor welcoming, clean, and well-maintained, and that our team's kindness and vigilance have left a positive impression. It's also reassuring to know your family feels confident that your mum is in the best place for her needs. We would like to assure you that we are always staffed in line with regulations to ensure the safety and care of our residents. While there may occasionally be busy moments, our team works tirelessly to meet the needs of every resident as promptly as possible. We also continually review our staffing levels to maintain the high standard of care that Townsend Manor is committed to providing. We're grateful for your understanding and your thoughtful observations, as they help us improve and refine our service. Please don't hesitate to reach out directly if you'd like to discuss this further or share any additional thoughts.

I highly recommend Townsend Manor. My mother and I have only been met with kindness, patience and understanding from all of the staff. They have done everything to help my mum settle and to make sure my mum has the correct medication and care. Townsend Manor home is beautifully decorated and has a feeling
of calm. The food is of a high standard and always well presented. The cafe area downstairs is a lovely touch.

My mother has settled quickly into her spacious room and reports everyone is lovely to her and the food is good. She's enjoying having daily showers in her own wet room. Staff are kind and sensitive to her needs. They have encouraged her to be more mobile and social, where previously she had isolated
herself because of her hearing difficulties. The staff are always welcoming and helpful. My mother has enjoyed some of the activities when someone has helped her to access them. She loves the Bistro area when we visit, especially the cake! As visitors, we always feel welcome and relaxed.

We are generally pleased with the care that my uncle receives. I have, however, spoken to a staff member about the state of my uncle's clothes. He has several nice shirts, jumpers and trousers, but we often find him in grubby clothes. I've tried to encourage him to put his clothes out for washing, but
he says he will wash them himself, which he doesn't. The staff member I spoke to is going to check his wardrobe, get rid of anything not worth keeping and make sure that anything grubby gets washed. Otherwise he seems quite happy at Townsend.
Reply from Sarah Ward, Home Manager at Townsend ManorThank you for your review. We're delighted to hear that your uncle is generally happy at Townsend Manor, and we appreciate you bringing up your observations about his clothing. It's important to us that all residents feel comfortable and well-presented, and we're glad you spoke with a team member to address this. They are already working to ensure his wardrobe is organised, unsuitable items are removed, and anything that needs laundering is taken care of promptly. We'll continue to support your uncle in maintaining his preferred appearance. We're grateful for your input, as it helps us refine our care and support. If there's anything more you'd like to discuss, please don't hesitate to reach out.

The care my mother receives is very good, there are a few negatives but on the whole I am very happy. It does slightly shock me that there are often services not working fridges, dishwashers. Which I think are a given in quality care homes. The staff are delightful and always on hand although occasionally
there has been no staff in the sitting room where my mother sits.
Reply from Sarah Ward, Home Manager at Townsend ManorThank you for your review and for highlighting both the positives and areas where we can improve. In general, the home is now looking tardy, including upholstery that is not looking as clean as it should. They have some very good carers, but some that are seem to do their job without going that extra distance.
The events near Christmas were good, but in no small part due to events that were organised
by friends/relatives of the residents; over the last year they have, on occasion, been lacking, although I appreciate it will be difficult to cater for all residents. As for value for money, regrettably no longer the case.
Reply from Sarah Ward, Home Manager at Townsend ManorThank you for sharing your feedback about Townsend Manor. We value hearing from residents and their families as it helps us maintain the high standards of care and service we strive for. We're sorry to hear you feel some aspects of the home, such as the upholstery, could be improved. Ensuring a clean and comfortable environment is a priority, and we are actively reviewing these areas to ensure they meet our expectations. We appreciate your kind words about our carers and are committed to ensuring all team members provide consistent, compassionate care to all residents. We're delighted to hear you enjoyed the Christmas events, which were part of our ongoing efforts to create engaging and meaningful activities for our residents. We are continually refining our programme to ensure it caters to the diverse needs and preferences of everyone in our care. Thank you again for your feedback. My dad moved into Townsend Manor on the 18th August 2023. On 1st January 2024 the fees were increased by 10%. I was not at all happy with this increase as my dad had only been there fir 4.5 months. The manager said she would put our case forward but nothing happened. Now I have been given another increase
of 9.9% which I feel is totally unacceptable. Despite numerous residents including myself requesting a visit from head office to discuss, this has not materialised. The area manager attended the meeting but could tell us nothing.
My dad has dementia but can still carry out his own personal care, dressing and toilet needs, therefore he requires very minimal attention from the staff. Dad has had a few falls since being in the home, some of which we were not notified about. We had to ask why he had a plaster on his forehead. Given the standard and level of care provided, I feel we are being overcharged already, prior to any further increase.
Reply from Sarah Ward, Home Manager at Townsend ManorThank you for sharing your feedback about your father's experience at Townsend Manor. We greatly value input from families as it helps us refine our services and ensure the needs of residents and their loved ones are met. We understand your concerns regarding fee increases. These adjustments are part of our commitment to maintaining high standards of care and are outlined in the contract provided before families decide to join us. While we know these changes can be challenging, we remain committed to clear communication and delivering value for our residents' care and comfort. We're pleased to hear you've recognised positive aspects of your father's experience, including his independence and the compassionate care provided by our team. Head office contact details are included in all correspondence to address concerns directly. Your feedback has been shared with senior management, and we're reviewing how we engage with families to ensure concerns are addressed swiftly.

My husband had only been a resident a few months before he sadly passed. Townsend Manor was my saviour. The way Townsend care for their residents is second to none. I'm truly grateful from the manager to the team of nurses and carers how quickly they worked out how to handle and approach my husband
as he could be difficult at times. I was kept informed on any health or medication changes. I felt at ease with him being at Townsend Manor unlike previous nursing homes. He enjoyed the food that was served which was a must for him and he also enjoyed being taken down to the bistro area for coffee especially the cakes. We often sat here when I came to visit this is such a lovely area to be together to have a coffee especially as I was unable to take him out anymore. The rooms at Townsend Manor are spacious, airy and well-designed, especially the wet room, privacy and dignity met all in one place. They made me and my 2 dogs very welcome on all occasions. This care home is 5 stars in my eyes.
Reply from Sarah Ward, Home Manager at Townsend ManorThank you so much for the thoughtful card you provided us. Your heartfelt words mean the world to the team at Townsend Manor. My Dad was a resident of Townsend for just over a year. I really can't thank all the staff enough for all the love and care they gave my Dad right up to the very end.
I really felt they all went above and beyond. Not only do the residents feel part of the Townsend family, we all did too. Visiting
is unrestricted which makes it feel homely. There is always a member of staff available to talk to.
I personally feel that not only have I lost my wonderful Dad but also some lovely friends too.

I can't fault the staff. They all did their utmost to care for my dad. Sadly, Dad was only there for about eight weeks. He died very peacefully in his room, with his family around him. The staff made it possible for the family to be with Dad for however long we wanted.
There was never a time limit
or set visiting hours. Also, any number of visitors could come and visit Dad, obviously being considerate of other residents.
The only thing that I can find fault with was that there wasn't an over-the-bed table available. As my dad was bedbound, a table would have been very helpful.
It felt as if we were part of a big family. I still go back to visit the staff, as they're all so lovely.

My sister and I moved Mum from another care home to Townsend Manor. On first looking around the care home, we were very impressed with the building and facilities offered. It was clean, tidy and well looked after. We were given advice and support from the care home manager, and she has continued to
provide advice and support throughout. The care staff are all very hardworking, friendly and caring, and not forgetting the important domestic, laundry, kitchen and maintenance staff as well. All work very hard to provide an excellent service. Mum settled in well and enjoyed sitting in the courtyard gardens in the warm autumn sunshine last year. We also enjoyed a film in the cinema room as well with drinks and popcorn provided! It is with thanks that we entrust the care for our dear mum to the lovely staff at Townsend Manor. Thank you.

With both Dad and step-mum suffering from dementia, the whole team at Townsend Manor have been truly amazing. When our Dad was getting frail and time passed everyone assisted the family with everything including passing away peacefully in-house. The professional care but with a family feel really helped
Dad and helped our step mum along with our own family feel at home and cared for. Everyone from management down, goes above and beyond a care home facility, keeping everyone involved and part of their family too. Such a kind, caring and proactive team. I couldn't thank them enough for everything.

My son and I were recommended to try the Townsend Manor Care Home for giving nursing care to my husband when our carers and I were finding his disability difficult to manage at home. He went in on October 8th and was shown a room which was ready for him to occupy. He was bedbound but was looked after
with good care and support and treated with dignity and respect. After being given a new catheter, he developed a urine infection and was treated at hospital. He went back to the home but was very frail. He slowly went downhill and was readmitted to hospital from where he did not return.
Would not hesitate to recommend the home.

Overall Experience 5.0 out of 5
My father moved into Townsend Manor in December, just before Christmas, and from the first step in, he has felt at home. The transition went better than we ever could have imagined, and we are so happy at how happy he is. The staff are absolutely amazing; they really do go above and beyond, they are
so accommodating for every need, answer every question and always make time. In the short few months, my dad has been part of their family, I now feel they are all very much part of ours, and they really do care for him like he is one of their own. They even listened to how much he missed playing pool, and he now has a little pool room for himself and the residents; little things like this go a really long way. My biggest fear was security, but within the first day, I was at ease, and I know my dad will not and cannot wander and 'escape'. I also now am able to visit my dad as his daughter and no longer feel I am his carer, and we have a much better quality of time together in snippets. Thank you all.

Excellent facilities and spotlessly clean. All staff are friendly and professional, nothing is too much trouble. Visitors are made very welcome and offered refreshments. The on-site hairdresser is very good. Plenty of activities and residents are encouraged to join in both on-site and excursions. Very
reassuring for relatives to know many of the carers are nurses and the doctor attends weekly.

Current Review Score: 9.5 (9.546)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.5 (9.546) out of 10 for Townsend Manor is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.5 out of 5 from 37 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 32 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.546 for Townsend Manor is calculated as follows: ( (299 Excellents x 5) + (86 Goods x 4) + (34 Satisfactorys x 3) + (10 Poors x 2) + (3 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 432 Ratings = 4.546
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Townsend Manor is based on 32 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 70 registered maximum number of service users is 14, which has been reached with 32 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
