Accountable To

The Matron /Manager

Reporting To

The Matron / Manager or the Nurse in Charge.

Job Purpose

To ensure the smooth running of the kitchen and to produce nutritious meals. To maintain service user’s personal, physical and intellectual independence.

Key Tasks

· To prepare meals in accordance with the menu for the residents, to the high standard expected by St Margaret’s Nursing Home

· To cook the meals taking into account the various dietary needs of the residents

· To be able to prepare special diets for the residents. To make alternative meals for residents if they request it

· To understand the method of stocktaking and ordering supplies

· To order supplies from the agreed supplier sources

· To know how to use temperature probe and ensure that food temperatures are taken and recorded

· To ensure that the fridge and freezer temperatures are recorded during your shift

· To ensure that all meals are presented in an appetising manner and introduce seasonal changes

· To be responsible for the cleanliness and ensure the kitchen is left clean and tidy at the end of the shift.

· To assist and supervise the kitchen assistant in the washing up and the cleaning of appliances

· To ensure that everything is left ready for the supper staff

· To ensure that all schedules are such as Safe Food Better Business are signed

· To ensure that the Food Hygiene standards are followed at all times

· Report any faulty and defective equipment to a senior member of staff

· Act in accordance with service users care plans especially dietary needs

Care of Service users and the building

  1. Assist in the care of the building.
  2. Promote independence and dignity of service users
  3. Assist in enabling service users to live their chosen lifestyle.
  4. Talk to and listen to service users.
  5. Report complaints directly to the nurse in charge as soon as they are made.

Other Duties

  1. Undertake such in house and external training which is appropriate to your role and has been identified through a training needs appraisal.
  2. Maintain confidentiality of information at all times.
  3. Work within the policies, procedures and guidelines of the Homes’ Quality Management System.
  4. Any other such duties as may be required to ensure the safe and effective management of infections or other H&S related activity to ensure the continuity of care for service users.
