Job Title : Cook

Responsible to : Registered Manager

Main purpose of job role : The provision of an efficient catering operation. To  prepare nutritious food for residents, maintaining a clean  and safe kitchen.

Main Responsibilities:

To be responsible for the preparation, cooking, presentation and serving of all meals.

Has overall responsibility for the maintenance and cleanliness of appliances and kitchen/catering areas.

To be responsible for the purchase and stock control of all food provisions, ensuring set budgets are adhered to.

Duties include:

  • To maintain stock at a satisfactory level ensuring that appropriate stock control procedures are adhered to. This will involve the correct rotation of stock, ie, ‘first in first out’ principle.
  • To purchase fresh foods from authorized local suppliers as necessary.
  • To purchase provisions/frozen foods from nominated suppliers.
  • To check all orders on arrival to ensure that what has been ordered has been delivered and that the quality is acceptable.
  • To check regularly that suppliers prices are competitive and to report to the Manager any deviations as necessary.
  • Responsibility for menu planning which will involve liaising with residents, staff and suppliers.
  • To prepare and cook nutritious food, to a high standard taking into account any special dietary requirements. To ensure that the presentation of all meals is of a high standard.
  • To prepare alternative food where dietary requirements dictate the need, ie, diabetics.
  • To maintain all relevant documentation and temperature checks as per, SFBB.
  • Overall responsibility for maintaining high standards of safety and hygiene within the catering areas.
  • To wash and clean kitchen utensils and equipment.
  • To undertake cleaning routines as per cleaning schedule.
  • To report any faulty equipment to Senior Management.
  • To adhere to Food Hygiene, Health & Safety and C.O.S.H.H. regulations ensuring a responsibility of care for oneself, residents and fellow employees health and safety.
  • To maintain all necessary documentation, ie, fridge/freezer temperature checks, cleaning schedule, Safer Food Better Business diary, etc.
  • To wear protective clothing as provided.
  • To ensure neither jewelry or nail polish is worn when on duty in the kitchen.
  • To be responsible for own training and development and undertake training as necessary.
  • To assist with the training and development of fellow employees as necessary.
  • To seek advice and guidance from Senior Management on any matters requiring clarification.
  • To communicate to senior management any information deemed necessary to ensure the efficient operation of the Home.
  • To continuously strive for self motivation and development.
  • To undertake such duties as directed by the Senior Management that are commensurate with the post and in keeping with the main purpose of the job.
