JOB TITLE: Senior Carer - Accommodation provided if needed

ACCOUNTABLE TO: Home Manager, Staff Nurse in Charge


  • To work alongside the staff nurse in the provision of resident care.
  • To act as a member to other carers by example and support in their supervision, development and appraisal


In addition to Carer responsibilities:


  1. Organise and manager carers on duty during a shift.
  2. Assist in the formal supervision of other carers.
  3. Assist the Manager in the appraisal of other carers.
  4. Take on the role of key worker for a group of residents.
  5. Assist a staff nurse in the administration of medicines.
  6. Respect the individual rights and choices of residents.
  7. Respond to the differing cultural values and diversity of residents.
  8. Undertake any observations as prescribed in residents’ care plans.
  9. Ensure the highest possible levels of care are maintained by supporting/assisting Clients, when required, with all aspects of daily living.
  10. Support training and supervision of junior and new Staff Members in all aspects of their work in the Home, under the supervision of senior Staff Members.
  11. Assist Clients in all aspects of their care needs (e.g. physical, emotional and spiritual). Provide supervision and attention when needed, ensuring Clients retain their comfort and dignity.
  12. Assist in the promotion of Continence.
  13. Assist in the delivery of care for Clients who are dying or who have a progressive illness. Assist with Last Offices.
  14. Complete, observe and review care planning needs for Clients, and complete written daily records as instructed and in line with the Company’s policies and procedures.
  15. Assist in framework of social activities by interacting with Clients and helping them continue with hobbies and activities in the Home.
  16. Report on well-being of Clients and liaise with GPs and Support Managers etc.
  17. Carry out regular checks on Clients at intervals
  18. Make Visitors feel welcome. Provide refreshments / assistance as and when required.
  19. If applicable, care for Clients’ clothing and rooms as named, and ensure that all clothing is recorded and clearly marked.
  20. Ensure full privacy and dignity is maintained for the dying and the bereaved, in line with the Home’s policies and procedures.
  21. Assist Clients who need help during meal times (be aware of swallowing difficulties, dietary requirements etc). Assist with serving of food / drinks as requested / required.
  22. Escort Clients travelling to and from the Home e.g. on social outings, hospital visits etc.
  23. Practice maximum integrity in all dealings with Clients' affairs, and avoid abuse of the privileged relationship that exists with Clients.


  1. Communicate effectively with colleagues and managers.
  2. Participate in Staff and Client meetings as and when required.
  3. Training and Development:
  4. Maintain professional knowledge and competence.
  5. Attend mandatory training days / courses, on or off site, as and when required.
  6. Participate in relevant NVQ training to achieve required qualifications.

Health and Safety

  1. Report immediately to the Home Manager, or Person in Charge, any illness of an infectious nature or accident incurred by a Client, colleague, self or another.
  2. Understand and ensure the implementation of the Home’s Health and Safety, Infection Control and Hygiene policies, and Emergency and Fire procedures.
  3. Report any health and safety issues or equipment failures to the manager or log on to the maintenance system.
  4. Promote safe working practice within the Home.
  5. Adhere to the Home’s Disposal of Waste policy.


  1. Contributing to the safeguarding of adults by ensuring you are aware of your role in relation to the Home’s Safeguarding Adult’s Policy, taking steps to protects Residents from any form of abuse or neglect and use the appropriate reporting mechanisms to inform the Home’s Management of any concerns.
  2. Adhering to all new, and changes in Local and Central Government initiatives as and when they are implemented.
  3. Promote and ensure the good reputation of the Home.
  4. Ensure that all information of confidential nature gained in the course of duty is not divulged to third parties.
  5. Notify the Home Manager, or the Person in Charge, as soon as possible of your inability to report for duty, and also on your return to work from all periods of absence.
  6. Ensure the security of the Home is maintained at all times.
  7. Adhere to all Home policies and procedures within the defined timescales.
  8. Ensure all equipment is clean and well maintained.
  9. Carry out any other tasks that may be reasonably assigned to you.
