A group of eight residents from The Manor House, a residential care home located in North Walsham Wood, North Walsham, have joined forces to form their very own ‘Knitting Nanas’ club to create knitted garments for good local causes. The first project is to knit blankets, bonnets and teddies, all of which will be donated to the Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital.
The club was formed in April and currently comprises of eight members who range in age from 72 to 93 years old. The original idea for the club came from two members, Janet Pallett and Doreen Waters, and it is supported by Zoe Wilson, Housekeeper at The Manor House. Wool is kindly donated by family and friends of the home, with more donations welcomed where possible.
Emma Cooper, home manager at The Manor House said: “The Knitting Nanas have created some fantastic items already, and when the items are complete it is hoped that a group of the ‘Nanas’ can present the items personally at the baby unit. It is such a marvellous cause and the group enjoys getting together. The knitting abilities vary though so they all help each other in completing the various garments, blankets and soft toys.”
National Care Home Open Day:
In conjunction with the Knitting Nanas’ efforts, The Manor House is holding a coffee morning on Friday 20 June, from 10am-12pm with a raffle in aid of the NICU Unit to support the group’s efforts. The event is taking place as part of National Care Home Open Day, which also sees The Manor House host an afternoon of entertainment, from 2:30pm, with ‘The Square Gee's' Music’.
David Bates, chief operating officer of the Healthcare Homes Group, which includes The Manor House said: “Friends, family and the local community are welcomed to visit the home on Friday 20 June to take part in the coffee morning event, and also share in the afternoon’s planned musical entertainment. It is a great opportunity for the community to meet with the residents at the home, and to also see the great work the Knitting Nanas group is doing for the Newborn Intensive Care Unit at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital.”
