Westy Hall, the CLS-run care home in Latchford, Warrington, recently decided to give back to the community by sponsoring a duck in the first ever Warrington Super Duck Race! The care home, a registered charity itself, sponsored a duck on behalf of the Latchford Local Partnership, an organisation that provides support to local community groups in the Latchford area. The money raised will be put towards improving St Margaret’s Community Centre; a shared activities space on Lindley Lane.
Elizabeth Taylor, who organised the Super Duck Race, was fundraising for the community centre as part of her work for the Latchford Local Partnership. She decided to contact Westy Hall due to the fact that her uncle had been a resident at the home, while her aunt once lived at another CLS home in the North West. Both of her relatives had thoroughly enjoyed their time with CLS, and Elizabeth knew that the Westy staff would be more than happy to support a local institution as important as St Margaret’s.
Elizabeth spoke about her relationship with the home: “It was hard finding the right place for my uncle when he needed extra care, but as soon as I walked in to Westy Hall, I knew I’d found the right place. The atmosphere was homely, and the staff were all genuinely friendly. You can really tell when people care.”
She also commented on the race itself: “The Super Duck Race was a great success. St Margaret’s desperately needed some help. I’d like to say a big thank you once again to everyone who contributed!”
Commenting on the donation, Westy Hall Home Manager, Katya Lyon, said: “When Elizabeth approached CLS for a donation, we were only too happy to help. Our residents have been to St Margaret’s Community Hub for tea on a number of occasions, and it serves a vital role in the local area.”
Katya commented further: “We were also thrilled to be able to help Elizabeth as staff got to know her very well while her uncle was a resident here at Westy. She is a lovely woman, and she works very hard for the good of the Latchford area.”
This year was the very first Super Duck Race at the Warrington Rowing Club. Participants sponsored floating plastics ducks, which were raced down the River Mersey. Winning ducks received a £100 cash prize, while sponsorships raised some much-needed funds for various charities. Elizabeth is hoping to make the event an annual affair.
