Sydmar Singers host booked out first public concert

The Mayor of Barnet, Councillor Mark Shooter, was the Guest of Honour at the inaugural concert by The Sydmar Singers at Sydmar Lodge Care Home in Edgware.

This was the first public concert by the newly formed residents' choir!

Over one hundred people, including loved ones, guests and members of the local community were welcomed into Sydmar Lodge for an afternoon of songs and celebration.

The concert was held in memory of Sheila Corrick, a founding member of the choir who recently passed away. The concert programme was filled with sentimental classics, with each tune having been carefully chosen by choir members. Concert goers were treated to classics, including Mary Hopkin's 1960's pop hit 'Those Were the Days', and Guy Mitchell's Crooner classic 'Side by Side'.

Sydmar Lodge's Activities Coordinator and Musical Director, Robert Speker, who also acts as Choirmaster, accompanied the singers on piano. Some of the braver singers stepped up for solos, with Vera Bronze taking on 'Always Look on the Bright Side of Life', Norman Freeman belting out 'Que Sera' and 'My Way' and Hannah Grant flexing her vocal chords with the Yiddish song 'Oyfn Pripetchik'.

The concert was followed by Chanukah Menorah candle lighting led by Rabbi Schochet and a celebratory tea.

Robert Speker, Activities Coordinator at Sydmar Lodge commented:

The Sydmar Singers have been preparing long and hard for this concert and an enjoyable afternoon was had by all.
