Green Tree Court residents and staff recently joined with children from local Pinhoe Primary School to host the Paralympic Torch as it passed through Exeter.
Selected as one of only 100 schools in the UK, children at Pinhoe Primary were invited to nominate 10 ‘Guardians of the Flame’ to complete a section of the course in the school grounds. The privileged ten were selected based on the Paralympic values of courage, determination, equality and inspiration.
Four residents from Green Tree Court were honoured to be selected as an inspiration by the school children, who regularly visit the home and enjoy craft sessions, entertainment and chatting with residents.
The Paralympic torch is the only one outside Brazil and will continue its tour of UK schools and events until it is used to light the Heritage Paralympic Flame at Stoke Mandeville Hospital on September 2nd. This flame will then be merged with the flames of the five torches representing the five regions of Brazil that have been touring there to form the one Paralympic torch flame that will be carried around Rio for the last two days of the relay before being used to light the Paralympic cauldron at the opening ceremony on September 7th.
Managing Director, Michelle Gorringe RN said, “We were delighted with the invitation from the children at Pinhoe Primary School to take part in this historic event leading up to the Paralympics. Our residents thoroughly enjoy spending time with the children, we always enjoy their visits to our home and we’re looking forward to many more joint activities in the future.”
