It’s a tradition of harvest time to make salt dough bread decorations in designs to celebrate the crops coming in from the fields, residents helped our chef to prepare a stunning wheat sheaf loaf.
Made in the shape of a tied bunch of grain stalks after they have been harvested it was a common sight at this time of year during the centuries when harvests were done by hand with scythes.
Residents talked about their memories of making bread, the delicious smell and taste of a warm loaf fresh from the oven, in some cases a staple of their daily diet. Recalling the celebrations of harvest in years gone by they recalled their school days when only seasonal food was available, very different to the wide range of fresh foods flown in from all over the world today.
