Staff and residents at Ebor Court care home have been rocking out to the greatest hits of British rock singer and songwriter, Rod Stewart, in a specially planned concert that was particularly close to one resident’s heart.
Staff at the York home spend time getting to know each resident, their likes, dislikes, hobbies, interests and life history as part of Ideal Carehomes unique initiative, #thisisme. And it was through this project that Lifestyle Manager, Susie Carman, discovered that 88-year-old resident, Dot Hudson, is a self-proclaimed super fan of British Rockstar, Rod Stewart.
The team delved deeper to find out that Dot has been a lifelong collector of the singer's albums and other memorabilia. However, one of her biggest regrets was not ever attending one of his renowned concerts. Deputy Manager, Janette Barrett, is also a huge fan and has attended two concerts, the most recent of which was in December 2019. To Dot’s delight, the pair were able to chat about all the juicy details of her experiences of the live performances over a cup of tea.
Following the conversation, Janette and Susie began thinking of how they could bring a taste of Rob Stewart’s concerts into the care home.
The pair decided to organise their very own concert for Dot using a large cinema TV to screen one of Rod's infamous performances at the Royal Albert Hall. The staff brought snacks and drinks including some of Dots favourite fizz to mark the special occasion. All of the residents were invited and by the end of the fun-filled evening listening to hit tracks such as Sailing and Have I Told You Lately That I Love You, Rod Stewart had acquired many new fans!
Speaking after the concert, Dot said, ‘The staff here are absolutely fantastic and always go above and beyond to make residents dreams come true! I used to regret never going to a concert but now I can tick that off my list thanks to the team here at Ebor Court. I had a wonderful evening and now so many of my friends at the home love Rod too, so we can all enjoy his music together!’.
Lifestyle Manager, Susie Carman, said, ‘To have the opportunity to put something like this together for one of our residents is one of the most rewarding parts of my job. The whole team really came together, and it just shows how much the Ideal Carehomes #thisisme initiative really works to provide positive outcomes for our residents!’.
Deputy Manager, Janette Barrett, said, ‘To be able to share my passion for music with our residents is absolutely brilliant. Our concert was so much fun, and everyone really embraced it, you would have thought Rod Stewart was in the building! I wish cherish the memories we made forever, and I know Dot and the other residents will too!’.
