At Westgate Healthcare, we are proud to shine a spotlight on the incredible individuals who bring compassion, dedication, and leadership to our homes every day. This month, we’re delighted to share the story of Tajá Young, Home Manager at Chestnut Manor, whose journey in care has been driven by purpose, passion, and a genuine love for helping others.
A natural calling Tajá’s career in care began in 2012, when she enrolled in a Nursing Degree at London South Bank University. That same year, she stepped into her first role as a Healthcare Assistant, an experience that laid the foundations for a deeply meaningful career. “Working in the hospital setting provided me with such a strong sense of purpose. I knew this was the field I was meant to be in.” Not long after, Tajá transitioned into the care home sector, taking on the role of Events Manager at a busy Bupa home. Her energy and creative flair quickly led to a promotion to Senior Events Manager, where she had the opportunity to support multiple homes.
"I've always found fulfilment in finding meaningful ways to brighten someone's day. Knowing I could bring a moment of joy or comfort into their lives, no matter how small, has always been one of the most rewarding parts of my work."
Growing through experience As Tajá’s career progressed, she continued to take on new responsibilities, including a role as Financial Administrator, which provided valuable insight into the operational side of care. But it was the people-facing side of the role she missed the most. Later that year, she was offered her first management position as Care Home Manager of a 26 bedded home, an opportunity that would become a turning point in her journey. “Becoming a Home Manager brought everything together for me – people, leadership, structure, and quality care. I haven’t looked back since.” Since then, Tajá has led teams in several homes, building a leadership style grounded in empathy, clarity, and high standards. With over 13 years of experience and a Level 5 qualification in Leadership & Management, she also holds a Mental Health First Aid certification and is the founder of Believe by Tajá – a platform launched during the pandemic to raise awareness about mental health and emotional wellbeing.
A perfect match at Chestnut Manor When Tajá joined Chestnut Manor, she knew she had found the right home to bring her vision to life. “I was looking for a setting that matched my values. A place where I could really make a difference and bring innovation and best practice. Chestnut Manor felt like the perfect fit from the very beginning.” Now several months into her role, Tajá is focused on supporting her team, enhancing resident experience, and making meaningful improvements that help the home continue to flourish. Supporting people to thrive A core part of Taja’s leadership is her commitment to nurturing those around her. She believes that when people feel genuinely seen, heard, and appreciated, they’re empowered to give their very best. “I believe in being present, approachable, and consistent. Regular check-ins, recognising achievements both big and small, and making sure every team member feels appreciated are part of my daily practice.” Tajá also recognises that motivation isn’t one-size-fits-all. For some, it’s career development; for others, it’s simply knowing their efforts are recognised and valued. “Taking the time to understand what matters to each person helps me support them in a way that’s meaningful. When team members feel truly supported, that’s when the best care naturally follows.”
Looking ahead: A focus on wellbeing Tajá is passionate about breaking the stigma around mental health in care. “Care work can be emotionally intense. I’m committed to creating a culture where conversations about mental health are normal, not the exception.” Her vision is to ensure everyone at Chestnut Manor: residents, team members and families, feels safe, heard, and cared for in every sense. “Wellbeing should be part of how we work, not just something we talk about.”
A heart-led approach From her very first role in care, Tajá has brought warmth, authenticity, and a commitment to excellence into everything she does. Her belief that care is a vocation, not just a job, shines through in the way she leads. “For me, it’s all about kindness, consistency, and creating a clear structure that helps everyone thrive. When people - both residents and team members - feel valued, supported, and know what to expect, that’s when positive changes are really made." We are proud to have Taja Young as part of our Westgate Healthcare family and look forward to seeing the continued impact she makes at Chestnut Manor.
