Shipley Manor Care Home, operated by St Mary’s Care Homes, are proud to announce that their talented chef, Monica Correia, has been crowned Care Chef of the Year at the prestigious Caring Times National Care Awards 2025. Monica was joined at the event by St Mary’s Riverside Manager, Laura Barnsley, and St Mary’s Lodge Manager, Louise Lambert, who were finalists in the Care Home Manager of the Year and Dementia Care Manager of the Year categories respectively. With over 20 years of culinary experience, Monica’s achievement is a testament to her exceptional skill, creativity and deep commitment to enhancing the lives of residents through food. Her award recognises not only her expertise, but also her dedication to creating person-centred menus that truly reflect the individuality and wellbeing of each resident she serves. At the heart of Monica’s approach is her passion for getting to know every resident personally. For every resident that moves in, Monica will take time to meet with them and their families to understand their likes, dislikes, and dietary requirements. From those conversations, Monica will then create meals that are as nutritious as they are delicious. She ensures every mouthful supports residents’ health, while bringing joy through taste, smell, and presentation. For those on modified diets, Monica works tirelessly to ensure their meals look and taste just as appealing, so that no one ever feels left out. She monitors residents’ choices and feedback, adjusting menus so that every dish is loved and enjoyed, creating a dining experience that feels truly personal. Monica’s background in dietetics and nutrition allows her to expertly tailor meals for residents with allergies, diabetes, anaemia, weight management needs and more. This experience ensures every diet is balanced, safe and satisfying. From new admissions to long-term residents, Monica meets everyone personally to complete a detailed dietary form, ensuring her kitchen team understands each person’s specific requirements. Each day, Monica attends meetings with care managers to discuss residents’ wellbeing and make any dietary adjustments needed. She even works alongside GPs to monitor progress and help avoid the need for supplements. Even at the most sensitive times, such as during end-of-life care, Monica continues to go above and beyond, using residents’ favourite flavours and textures to bring comfort and familiarity through food. But Monica’s warmth extends beyond the kitchen. She’s known for feeding “a family”, providing treats for staff, families, and visitors alike. From beautifully presented cakes at reception to delicious dishes for special events, Monica makes sure everyone who walks through Shipley Manor’s doors is welcomed with good food and a smile. Following her award win, Monica shared a heartfelt message of thanks: “First, I want to thank my family — my heart and my foundation. Your love, patience, and constant support have carried me through every long day and every challenge. This achievement belongs as much to you as it does to me. To my wonderful manager, thank you for always supporting me, believing in me, and pushing me to be my best. And to my bosses, thank you for trusting me and for nominating me for this award. Your confidence means more than words can say. I also want to express my deepest gratitude to two incredible chefs and mentors who have shaped my journey — Chef Aimé Barroyer, who made me fall in love with cooking and taught me so many beautiful recipes and tricks, and Chef Osvaldo Piuzza, who opened my heart even more to the art of patisserie. You both inspired me to cook with passion and creativity every single day. This award is not just a recognition of my work — it’s a celebration of everyone who has walked beside me, taught me, and believed in me. Thank you all, from the bottom of my heart.”

St Mary’s Care Homes Managing Director, Kirsty Crozier, added: “We are absolutely thrilled for Monica. Her passion, dedication and talent shine through in everything she does, providing beautiful meals for residents at Shipley Manor. She truly embodies the spirit of person-centred care and this award couldn’t be more deserved.”
