In a difficult year and few weeks adjusting to the changes for us as a family and in particular mum. Now to have mum in a supportive, caring and well led environment has helped this so much. Everyone so friendly, welcoming and helpful. Very responsive. Nothing too much trouble. Very kind.

It was a pleasure being at St. Winifred's nearly everything about the place was excellent. The management and staff were helpful and friendly. The food was wonderful. The activities coordinator was very enthusiastic - the activities were enjoyable. My room was comfortable; it was very useful to have
the bathroom and lift just opposite; the one comment I would make is that my room was ripe for refurbishment.

Great bunch of staff, down to earth and a credit to the care home. Food all made form scratch and homemade. Courtyard outside is safe and secure, lovely to sit out in better weather. Hairdresser available when wanted, very good too!

This lovely home has cared for my mum for a number of years, and the love and care she receives is second to none. All the staff are welcoming when we visit, and it is clear that they look after their residents. The food always looks nice and well presented, and there is a good menu choice. The home
provides a wide range of activities for the residents, from group activities to one to one’s where required.
We would have no hesitation in recommending this home to anyone; they work extremely hard to make it what it is.

The experience we have had in the last ten weeks that Dad has been a resident at the home has been a positive one. Dad came into the home very unwell and has made fantastic progress while here, and as a family, we believe this is due to the care he has received. The staff are friendly and approachable,
and we hope that the remainder of his stay going forward is the same.

I cannot speak highly enough about St Winifred's and everyone who works there in all capacities. My mum was in the home for approximately 20 months, and I can honestly say I have never seen her more happy or more settled. The nursing home was always clean and tidy, and my mum was always clean and tidy.
The food always looked great, and the staff were always happy and smiling. The staff were always friendly with my mum, and she was well looked after.
I would happily recommend this nursing to family and friends as they have been absolutely amazing with my mother.

Mum was me to feel like she was at home with the high level of care, support, constant contact and help given by the in-house team. Always made time to support us, and went the extra mile to assist us in the latter stages of Mum's illness. Could also speak with the team and made to feel welcome when
visiting; even while all the COVID-19 issues were going on.
Fantastic team effort by everyone.
Thanks.

I am writing this review to praise the professional care, attention and kindness given to my 94-year-old mother in the last 4 weeks of her life.
Also to the family and visitors.
My mother was always well dressed clean and very comfortable and nothing was too much trouble for the staff.
Close to her
passing away the care and consideration given to the relatives with kind words, numerous cups of tea, and always a kind word.
Many thanks to all the carers and staff at St Winifred's.

Current Review Score: 9.1 (9.097)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.1 (9.097) out of 10 for St Winifred's Nursing Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 6 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.4 out of 5 from 6 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.708 for St Winifred's Nursing Home is calculated as follows: ( (54 Excellents x 5) + (15 Goods x 4) + (3 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 72 Ratings = 4.708
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.389 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for St Winifred's Nursing Home is based on 6 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 = 3.6
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 38 registered maximum number of service users is 7.6. 6 Positive Reviews ÷ 7.6 = 0.789
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

John Field-Lee

Job Title: Registered Manager Joined: 2017

My name is John Field-Lee, and I am the Registered Manager at St Winifred's Nursing Home.

My interest in supporting and caring for others began when I was a youth carer for my father, which ultimately inspired me to pursue a career in the care sector.

Over the past 18 years, I have gained extensive experience in various roles within the care sector, starting as a care assistant and support worker, progressing to team leader and head of care, and leading to my current position as Registered Manager.

In July 2018, I took on the role of acting manager at St Winifred's Nursing Home and shortly after completed my CQC registration to become the registered manager.

Over the last seven years, my team and I at St Winifred's have embarked on a significant journey of improvement. When I first joined, the home was rated inadequate and faced potential closure. Through our shared vision of "treating everyone with mutual respect, dignity, and care," along with a collective passion and commitment to providing outstanding care, we have continuously worked to improve and develop our services. Witnessing the home's progress from "Inadequate" to "Requires Improvement" and now to "Good" has been incredibly rewarding, and we remain dedicated to achieving an "Outstanding" status.

Jan Sykes

Job Title: Clinical Lead Joined: 2018

My name is Jan Sykes, and I am the clinical lead nurse at St Winifred's Nursing Home. I rejoined the team in this role in July 2018, as part of the new management structure.

I have a long history with St Winifred's, having previously worked here for over 20 years as a staff nurse and later as a deputy manager. I have always felt a strong connection to the home and am incredibly proud to be part of the positive changes we have implemented.

My journey in nursing began in 1980 when I qualified as a registered nurse in Hillingdon, Uxbridge. While my first staff nurse position was on a paediatric ward, my passion has always been caring for the elderly. Following a couple of years living in West Germany where I became a mother, I returned to the UK and gained further experience at Lewisham Hospital and a children's hospital in Catford, South East London.

Since relocating to West Yorkshire, I found my way back to St Winifred's and haven't looked back. I am particularly passionate about working with elderly residents and those requiring end-of-life and palliative care.

Debbie

Debbie Butcher

Job Title: Administrator Joined: 1996

My name is Debbie Butcher, and I have been a part of the St. Winifred's team since 1996. Before joining St. Winifred's, I worked in factories, where I managed three production lines.

When I first started at St. Winifred's, I embraced a new and exciting role as a care assistant. Over the years, I progressed to a senior carer position, a new role within the home. As a senior carer, in addition to providing care, I was responsible for the training and development of other care assistants.

After a year as a senior carer, I was offered another new role as the Head Senior. In this capacity, I continued to support the care floor and also trained and supported other senior carers in their roles.

In 2012, I transitioned to a new and exciting position as a receptionist at the home. Over the years, this role evolved into a full administrator position.

I had originally planned to retire in 2024, but after careful consideration, I found myself unable to step away from my work and the home I had grown to love. As a result, I returned to St. Winifred's at the beginning of 2025 as a part-time administrator.

I truly enjoy working at St. Winifred's; it has always proven to be a very diverse and fulfilling place.

Monica

Monica Dunnett

Job Title: Administrator Joined: 2021

My name is Monica Dunnett, and I am a support worker and administrator at St Winifred's Nursing Home.

After graduating from university in 2018 with a psychology degree and a strong desire to help others, I was drawn to the care sector. I joined St Winifred's in 2021 and it has been a wonderful journey of continuous learning and growth.

I began my time here as a support worker and recently had the opportunity to join the administration team at the start of this year.

St Winifred's feels like a family, and I am proud to be part of a team that shares a commitment to treating everyone with respect, dignity, and compassion.

Katrina

Katrina Mason

Job Title: Kitchen Manager Joined: 1988

My name is Katrina Mason, and I am the Kitchen Manager at St Winifred's Nursing Home, where I have been for 37 years. My journey here began as a part-time cook, progressing to full-time and eventually to my current role.

I have a strong foundation in catering, having studied at Huddersfield College. My studies covered a broad spectrum of experiences in restaurants and bars, and I consistently achieved credits and distinctions.

Following college, I gained valuable experience at Huddersfield Royal Hospital, where I was responsible for preparing hundreds of meals daily for patients.

After my time at the hospital, I moved to Yorkshire Water, initially as an Assistant Manager and then as the Manager of the staff restaurant. In this role, I catered for up to 200 employees and managed a team of 12 staff members.

Subsequently, I spent three years on a youth training scheme, earning a City & Guilds secondary education teaching certificate. I utilized this qualification to teach teenagers job-based skills to aid their transition into employment. During this period, I also worked as a waitress for weddings, banquets, and various events.

In my present position at St Winifred's, I lead a small team dedicated to providing nutritious, home-cooked, and balanced meals to our elderly residents. We cater to a variety of specific dietary requirements, including allergen-friendly and diabetic options.

I take great pride in the fact that we consistently provide fresh, homemade meals and desserts to our residents while maintaining a 5-star food hygiene rating week after week.

Lynn

Lynn Young

Job Title: Team Leader Joined: 2010

My name is Lynn Young, and I am a Team Leader at St Winifred's Nursing Home.

Caring for others has been a significant part of my life, particularly through supporting my brother, who has Down's Syndrome. Growing up, I also volunteered my time assisting individuals with learning difficulties in their daily living and independence activities.

During a challenging period when my three children were young, my husband became seriously ill. I underwent training in safe manual handling, specialist PEG feeding, and the safe administration of controlled drugs to provide him with the support and care he needed until his peaceful passing.

I have dedicated over fifteen years to St Winifred's, taking on various roles, starting as a Care Assistant and progressing to Senior Care Assistant before becoming a Team Leader and Manual Handling Coordinator.

Currently, I leverage my experience and knowledge to deliver care and contribute to the development of new support workers entering the care profession.
