Suffolk County Council and Care UK launched a £60 million programme of investment in new care homes and wellbeing centres during a special on-site ceremony in Ipswich.
Councillor Alan Murray, and Care UK’s Toby Siddall and Frances Gibson were joined by pupils from The Oaks Primary School for the event in Aster Road, where the first development is underway.
In January, Suffolk County Council approved Care UK’s plans to build a new care home, which will provide nursing and specialist dementia care services. In addition, there will be wellbeing centre, which will provide day care activities and clubs designed to help older people maintain their independence and offer valuable respite for family carers. The building is due to be completed next summer.
Residents of the nearby Hawthorn Drive home and Angel Court, in Hadleigh, will be given the option of moving into the new facility. Both homes will close when all residents have moved out.
Mr Siddall, managing director of residential care services at Care UK, said: “We are very pleased to have started building our first new care home and wellbeing centre in Suffolk. This is the first in a carefully coordinated and phased programme in partnership with Suffolk County Council, to fulfil the vision for older people’s care.”
Cllr Murray, the council’s member for health and adult care, said: “This marks the start of us delivering on our promise to Suffolk residents; to ensure the county has purpose built, 21st century facilities that support people in delivering high quality care to the most vulnerable in society.”
