“Kind” pupils from a school in Greater Manchester cooked up a treat for elderly people with dementia.
The Year 10 students from Fred Longworth High School invited residents from Belong Atherton, a purpose-built village where older people with dementia receive advanced support, to enjoy a meal with them after learning to cook as of a Prince’s Trust xl club award.
They cooked and served fish and chips and spotted dick with custard, as well as homemade lemonade.
The meal went down well with the Belong Atherton residents, who praised the students for their efforts. Elsie Gerrard thought it was “so kind” of the pupils, while Nellie Williams said “everything was lovely” and that she “really enjoyed” the visit to the school, adding that the experience was “smashing”.
Nicola Beaver, activities co-ordinator at Belong Atherton, said: “The best part for me was seeing our customers and students mixing. Hearing two generations laughing about their school days as they traded stories was a real high point for me.
“We were overwhelmed by the effort that the students had gone to and felt very welcome. The students were a credit to their school and we’re already planning ways to work together again in the future.”
