Specialist business property adviser, Christie & Co, has been instructed to sell the former care home, Fremington Manor, in North Devon.
Fremington Manor was built in the late 1800s as a stately home, extensively remodelled from the original manor house built in the 1700s. It enjoyed a reputation as a place for the upper classes to play polo and swim, until 1904, when tragedy struck the home when Lady Hilda McNeill and Glyn Pritchard, two members of the gentry, drowned in the River Taw near the manor. During the Second World War, Fremington Manor was used by the US army, and was then transformed into an army camp for the British Army until the 1980s. Following this, the manor has been used as a care home, providing high-quality care to the local community for decades until its recent closure.
The original manor house, an impressive Grade II Listed building constructed in red brick with pitched slate roofs behind a parapet wall, has been extended multiple times to now provide accommodation across 56 bedrooms, 38 of which have en suite facilities. These include a purpose-built two-storey rear/side extension added in 1996, as well as single-storey additions and a conservatory overlooking the gardens. The main entrance is through a single-storey section, and the property is accessed via a private tarmac driveway leading to a car park with space for approximately 30 vehicles.
The property sits on 5.4 acres of land in the large North Devon village of Fremington, approximately three miles west of the market town of Barnstaple. Positioned on the south bank of the tidal estuary of the River Taw, the village lies along Church Hill (B3233) in a predominantly residential area but within Fremington Conservation Area.
Eve-Angelica Apperley, Business Agent – Care at Christie & Co, comments, “This closed former care home, which was deregistered in May 2025, was recognised as a premium care home within the immediate vicinity. The opportunity now exists for a new owner, either locally based or further afield, to acquire the property and re-establish the business or, subject to the necessary planning permission, pursue an alternative use.”
Fremington Manor is on the market with an asking price of £1,750,000.
