Today was a truly special and meaningful day here at Friary Care as our residents came together to reflect, create, and connect, both with each other and with the past.
We started by making paper poppies by hand. Each poppy was carefully crafted, with many residents sharing memories and thoughts about what the symbol means to them. A symbol of love, community and pride.
We spent time exploring one of our treasured memory boxes. This was filled not with wartime memorabilia, but with everyday items from years gone by. There were old baking tools, pieces of clothing, ration books and household bits and bobs that sparked rich conversation.
Later in the day, we gathered together to watch The Kings Parade, a moving and dignified tribute that brought the room together. The room was quiet as we watched, many of our residents clearly touched by the ceremony, the music, and the meaning behind it.
Today was about more than just remembering the past. It was about coming together as a community to mark Victory over Japan Day, honouring those who served, and celebrating the peace that followed.
