Job summary
Unit Manager Job Description:
The Unit Manager will be expected to actively participate in the following activities:
Main Duties
- To lead and motivate a team to deliver special experiences to residents, which promote choice and independence that make a positive difference to their daily lives
- Achieve the highest possible standards of care and outcomes for residents by ensuring colleagues meet their individual care needs in accordance with company policy, regulations and codes of conduct and individual care plans. This includes, but is not limited to assisting with personal hygiene, bathing, dressing and continence management
- To ensure care plans are developed in collaboration with residents, their family and friends (where appropriate) and other external stakeholders, ensuring their implementation
- Ensure that care records are correctly maintained and updated in accordance with HMT policy to enable correct staffing levels to be provided
- Set expectations within your team to ensure their conduct is professional and considered
- Ensure all elements of resident experience are positive, from admission to discharge. For example, psychological considerations, safe custody of property, pain management and dignity
- Follow care home policy in respect of custody and administration of all medication
- Regularly engage with, and seek feedback from, residents, relatives, visitors and colleagues in order to continually improve the residents’ quality of life and level of service provided
- Take appropriate action in the event of an emergency, in accordance with the relevant HMT policy
- In the absence of the Home Manager, assist in the overall management of the Home as required
- Under the supervision of the Home Manager, responsible for the Unit staffing rota, insuring staffing levels are safe and appropriate to residents needs and dependency, with the correct skill mix
- Ensure you follow a rigorous monitoring and recording practice; documenting efficiently and thoroughly all matters relating to our residents and employees. E.g. timely assessment on admission, person centred care planning, on-going review, incident reporting (Datix) and management
- Undertake root cause analysis of accidents and incidents, making recommendations based on results and outcomes
- Under the supervision of the clinical lead/Home Manager, make onward referrals to external agencies
- Assist with supervision, assessment and training of junior staff.
- Assist in staff recruitment, onboarding and orientation to the Care Home.
- Assist in staff disciplinary procedures as required
- Keep clinical knowledge and skills updated
- Must maintain NMC PIN and evidence of Continuing Professional Development/Revalidation
General
- To be responsible for the health, safety and welfare of yourself and others whilst at work, including colleagues, residents and visitors to the Home and for alerting the officers responsible to any hazards or potential risks to health and safety
- To be fully conversant with the HMT policies relating to Safeguarding of Vulnerable Adults and Whistleblowing
- To ensure compliance with the HMT Information Governance Policy and GDPR, maintaining an appropriate level of confidentiality around issues that may be personal or commercially sensitive
- To ensure compliance with National and local Infection Prevention and Control guidance and policies
- Establishing and maintaining positive working relationships both with colleagues, residents, visitors and other health professionals and agencies
- To act as an ambassador for the HMT company Vision. Ethos and Values
- To promote equality and diversity at all times and across all work activities, with an emphasis on protected characteristics and promoting Fairness, Respect, Equality, Dignity and Autonomy (FREDA)
- To adhere to HMT policies and procedures
- Attend mandatory training days / courses, on or off site, as per contractual agreement and role requirement
- To undertake any other duties and accountabilities which would be lawful, reasonable and appropriate to the role
The Post Holder Will Have:
- A minimum of 5yrs Experience post registration
- Recent experience of delivering nursing care in a clinical environment
- Knowledge of Health & Safety legislation and procedures including medication policies and procedures
- Knowledge of the older client group and their complex needs, and the support needs of their relatives’ carers
- Experience of working with older adults and understanding complex needs and the needs of people with dementia
- IT Literate E.g. Excel, Microsoft
- Awareness of the Mental Capacity Act and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards.
- Experience of working with other multi agency professionals, including local authority and clinicians
- To be willing to undertake further training in relation to role and be committed to personal development
- To be assertive and confident with multi agency partners, ensuring residents are at the heart of all decision making and residents are supported fully in the process
- Ability to create positive relations with residents, their families, colleagues and other professionals with enthusiasm and commitment to the service.
