Job summary
Main responsibilities
General Maintenance
- Report and action any known defects to appliances, damaged furniture / equipment and any other potential hazards to the Home Manager, who will advise accordingly
- Ensure the maintenance of the Care Home’s exterior, including:
o Keep any sheds, outbuildings and areas in which waste is stored in a clean and tidy condition
o Clear snow and grit the drive, paths and any areas to which Service Users, Visitors or Staff Members have access
o Where applicable; cut the grass around the building and tend to any flowerbeds, hanging baskets etc
o Clean all signs / lighting outside the Care Home
- Carry out any patching up or touching up of decoration as and when required in order to maintain the standard of Care Home
- Ensure all ventilation units and lights are kept clean. Replace any defective light bulbs / diffusers or light fittings if required
- Ensure all nurse call points, and electrical sockets are in good working order
- Undertake basic electrical works i.e light fittings, electrical sockets
- Ensure all bathrooms are safe, clutter free and comfortable for use
- Test the fire alarm system, call points, fire exits, door retaining devices and fire emergency lights, as specified in Company procedures and log results in the appropriate places.
- Test all portable appliance as specified in Company procedures
- Test and record water temperatures as specified in company procedures
- Ensure all mattress checks are carried out and are in good working order
- Ensure all radiators are working and have appropriate covers in place
- Ensure the temperature in the rooms are comfortable for the residents
- Maintain a ‘Maintenance Book’ in which defects are recorded by Staff Members. Use this book to effect repairs / replacements daily
- Ensure the daily, weekly, and monthly checks are all carried out and recorded
- Ensure any defects or issues are reported to the Home Manger
- Assist / supervise with deliveries to the Care Home. Monitor delivered goods closely
- To maintain an effective and labelled system for all the keys relating to the premises / vehicles
Communication
- Participate in any daily flash meetings or other H&S meetings as required
- Participate in Staff and Service User meetings as required
- Complete all relevant documentation
- Liaise with Home Manager or delegated Staff Member regarding maintenance work to be carried out
Budgetary/Financial Control
- Ensure that all commodities used in and around the Care Home are sensibly conserved by all Staff Members
- Ensure that items purchased on behalf of the home are appropriate and ‘value for money’
- Ensure that receipts are obtained and handed over to the Home Administrator for any expenditure
Training and Development
- Maintain and improve professional knowledge and competence.
- Attend mandatory training days/course, on or off site as and when required
Health & Safety
- Adhere to the Care Homes disposal of waste policy
- Ensure that paints and varnishes are used and stored only in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions
- Ensure areas in which any painting / varnishing work is being done is well ventilated and safe for Service Users, Visitors and Staff Members
- Report immediately to the Home Manager or Person in Charge any illness of an infectious nature or accident incurred by a Service Users, colleague, self or another
- Understand, and ensure the implementation of the Care Homes Health & Safety policy and Emergency and Fire procedures
- Promote safe working practice in the Care Home
- Ensure a cluster free environment is maintained throughout the premises
General
- Ensure that all existing stocks are maintained in a safe and tidy environment and reorder as and when required
- Inform the Home Manager or Person in Charge of any visit to Care Centre by external maintenance staff. Record the visit in the appropriate manner.
- Undertake driving duties if required by Home Manager or Person in Charge limiting trips to necessary mileage only i.e. frequent visits to GP should be reduced by planning
- Ensure that all information of confidential nature gained in the course of duty is not divulged to third parties
- Notify the Home Manager or Person in Charge as soon as possible of your inability to report for duty and on your return to work from all periods of absence
- Promote and ensure the good reputation of the Care Home and The Company
- Ensure the security of the Care Home is always maintained
- Adhere to all Company policies and procedures within the defined timescales
- Ensure all equipment is clean and well maintained
- Carry out any other tasks that may be reasonably assigned to you
Emergencies
- Be ‘On Call’ for advice / action in any emergencies which may arise out of hours
- Where a ‘fault’ cannot be rectified, provide details of the fault to the Home Manager or Person in Charge as soon as possible so that services are not disrupted for lengthy periods and appropriate instructions can be given regarding action to take
