Care Assistant – Mental Health Nursing Home (Job Description)

Overview

A Care Assistant in a mental health nursing home provides person-centred support to residents with a range of mental health conditions, promoting wellbeing, independence, dignity, and safety. The role involves working as part of a multidisciplinary team to deliver high-quality care in a therapeutic environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist residents with personal hygiene, dressing, grooming, and toileting.

  • Support residents with mobility, including safe use of hoists and other equipment.

  • Help with meals, hydration, and nutritional support according to individual care plans.

  • Encourage independence and involvement in daily activities.

2. Mental Health Support

  • Provide emotional support and reassurance to residents experiencing anxiety, depression, behavioural challenges, or cognitive decline.

  • Observe and report changes in behaviour, mood, or mental state to senior staff.

  • Support residents in following therapeutic routines, coping strategies, and meaningful activities.

  • Promote a calm, safe, and structured environment.

3. Care Planning & Record Keeping

  • Follow individual care plans and risk assessments.

  • Accurately record care delivered, observations, incidents, and resident progress.

  • Work collaboratively with nurses, therapists, and other professionals to ensure holistic care.

4. Safety, Safeguarding & Compliance

  • Maintain a safe environment for residents, including following infection-control and health & safety procedures.

  • Safeguard vulnerable adults by reporting concerns immediately.

  • Assist in managing challenging behaviours using approved de-escalation techniques.

5. Social & Therapeutic Support

  • Encourage participation in social activities, rehabilitation programmes, and community involvement.

  • Build positive, trusting relationships that support emotional wellbeing.

  • Promote dignity, respect, and person-centred values at all times.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Experience in care, ideally in mental health or dementia services (desirable but not always essential).

  • NVQ Level 2 or Level 3 in Health and Social Care (or willingness to work towards it).

  • 2 day Mandatory Training induuction provided.

  • Enhanced DBS check. £30 contribution required

Typical Working Hours

  • Shift work 8 - 8 weekdays, weekends, and bank holidays.
