Job summary
The Senior Care Assistant is responsible for delivering high-quality, person-centred care to residents while leading and supporting the care team on shift. Reporting to the Registered Manager or Deputy Manager, the role involves ensuring that care is delivered safely, compassionately, and in line with all regulatory standards, promoting dignity, independence, and overall wellbeing for all residents within the home.
The post holder will take a leadership role during shifts by allocating duties, overseeing care delivery, and ensuring clear and effective handovers between staff. They will act as a point of contact for team members, residents, and relatives, offering guidance and support while escalating any concerns or incidents to management as appropriate. A key part of the role is mentoring and supporting Care Assistants to maintain high standards and a consistent approach to care.
In addition to supervisory duties, the Senior Care Assistant will provide direct support to residents, including personal care, assistance with mobility, nutrition, and emotional wellbeing. They will ensure that care is always delivered in line with individual care plans, promoting choice, dignity, and independence. Building strong, respectful relationships with residents and their families is essential.
The role includes responsibility for medication administration, ensuring that medicines are handled, stored, and recorded safely in line with policies and training. The Senior Care Assistant will also contribute to the development and review of care plans and risk assessments, maintain accurate and up-to-date records, and monitor residents for any changes in physical or mental health, reporting concerns promptly.
Maintaining compliance with health and safety standards and regulatory requirements is a core responsibility. This includes safeguarding residents from harm, carrying out risk assessments, and responding appropriately to emergencies. The Senior Care Assistant will also communicate effectively with external professionals such as GPs, nurses, and social workers, as well as participate in team meetings and ongoing training.
The ideal candidate will have previous experience in a care setting, preferably in a senior or supervisory role, and hold (or be working towards) an NVQ Level 3 in Health and Social Care. They will demonstrate strong leadership, communication, and organisational skills, alongside a compassionate, reliable, and professional approach. A commitment to delivering high standards of care and the ability to remain calm under pressure are essential.
