At a time when there seems to be a resounding amount of negative press about Care Homes, it is heartening to hear of a fantastic local success story.
The dedicated staff at The Depperhaugh Nursing Home, in Hoxne near Eye are celebrating, after receiving a national award recognising the Gold Standard of care they provide for their residents.
The Gold Standards Framework helps homes like The Depperhaugh provide the right care, at the right time in the right place – reducing inappropriate hospital admissions and increasing their chances of residents dying in their preferred place of care – the nursing home.
Elena Marin, Home Manager of The Depperhaugh said: “We are truly delighted to have been awarded this prestigious award. We have always prided ourselves on the excellent care we give to the people we care for at The Depperhaugh.”
Professor Keri Thomas, GSF National Clinical Lead said: “GSF has become recognised as the kite marked model of best practice for end of life care in care homes. Homes like The Depperhaugh are a beacon for others to follow, as they are providing the right care, in the right place, at the right time; offering their residents the sort of care we would want for ourselves and our loved ones.”
Those care homes that have received the GSF Quality Hallmark Award have demonstrated an excellence in the quality of care they provide and halving hospital deaths and crisis admissions, leading to greater satisfaction for families, residents and staff, plus significant cost savings for the NHS. To be accredited, the home had to show that it met 20 different criteria in all areas, ranging from leadership and support to dignity and respect, as well as submitting a portfolio of evidence.
Everyone in the home, ranging from nurses and catering staff, are involved in regular reviews with the residents. All aspects of their lives are considered including spiritual beliefs, personal interests and care preferences. This has helped the residents and their families feel secure in the knowledge that they will be comfortable and their preferences considered at all times.
The National GSF Centre has accredited up to 200 homes a year. This helps individuals and their families identify homes that deliver high quality care, a ‘gold standard’ of care for all their residents as they come to the last stages of their life.
